Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.60%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
With deep black color, a thick, creamy head, rich chocolate, toffee and coffee flavors, and full-bodied smoothness, Anchor PorterĀ® is the epitome of a handcrafted dark beer.

A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.

Pours opaque black with a long lasting dark tan head with stable foam even after it dissipates mostly. Splotchy lacing. Looks like a porter should.

Licorice, dark fruit, bready malt, some milk chocolate, and light roastiness all coming through in the aroma. Roast is mild, not like coffee, more nutty. No hop aroma. No off flavors at all. Tastes fresh.

Moderate back of throat hop bitterness in the flavor, but no real hop taste. Fairly well balanced, with hop bitterness balancing and drying out initial sweetness, but not ending too dry either. Very good.

Medium full body, moderate carbonation that is slightly prickly in a good way. Smooth hop bitterness. Moderately creamy. The roast is nice. Not astringent or overwhelming.

Very solid delicious porter. Nice and creamy and decently hopped.

Pretty black color. Very hoppy on the nose especially for a porter, with some nice roasty malt in the aroma aswell. Slight sweet start, and then leeds in to a roasty malty middle and hoppy finish. Has an excellent aftertaste of bitter chocolate, and in the dying stages i have some apple notes. This is a great porter.

This poured a murky, dark brown. Almost black with two finger creamy tan head that stuck around and gave nice lacing.

The aroma is of cocoa with earthy elements and burnt bread crust, some roasty notes and milk chocolate hints.

Full of cocoa and chocolate notes with a hint of vanilla and earthy hops to balance. Roasty hints, nice balance.

Medium bodied, smooth

Overall, a well balanced, smooth, easy drinking porter.

Bottled served in a pint glass

A - Dark brown almost obsidian with very little light with a 2 finger ecru head with good retention and moderate lacing.

S - Roasted malt and chocolate but not very strong.

T - Don't be fooled by the smell, but this porter packs a punch. It is like biting into a warm cookie with chocolate, coffee, and malt all in the forefront. Just a nice smooth dry finish at the end with a touch of bitter. Very very nice.

M - Full bodied and moderate carbonation with a nice creamy texture.

O - One of the most delightful porters and I think the best that Anchor has to offer!
