Thanks to eyebereej for this bottle! Reviewed from notes. 2017 vintage bottle; strangely, I did not note at all the date of consumption. Based on position within the notes, I believe about a year ago. Poured from the 750 mL bottle into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass.
A: Crystal clear beautiful gold, until it gets a fair amount of yeasty haze in the bottom quarter or so of the bottle. Low level of visible carbonation and almost no head – just a few white bubbles that rise solo and recede quickly.
S: Lactic tart, lemony citric acid. Funky – basement and barnyard – and cracker malts. Mild tropical fruits (maybe pineapple?) and citrus fruits. Aroma is clean and appealing, but not overly funky or tart.
T: Lactic and lemony tart up front with citric acid. Musty barnyard and old book funk. Cracker malts and a light vanilla. Lemons and underripe tropical fruits, and a touch of fruity yeast esters. A dry lingering citric tart at the swallow, with just a bit of the dry oak tannins.
M: Body on the light side of average for an AWA. Low alcohol flavors. The carbonation in this bottle is low, but just manages enough to not ruin it.
O: I wish this bottle was a little more bubbly, but otherwise this is excellent. A clean, non-fruited sour. Good balance of funk and tart flavors, clean and dry finish without being enamel-stripping acidic at all. You could take down a 750 by yourself pretty easily I think. Really enjoyable.
