I stopped at a random depanneur in Montreal and was surprised to find this one. I've been a Charlevoix fan for a while now and have never encountered Flacatoune before. It seems to be a rarity, with their Vache Folle and Dominus Vobiscum lines taking centre stage (Flacatoune is neither). Bottled May 19, 2010, so it seems it's still in active production.
I'll attempt a little translation of the label description, since I don't know if I'll be seeing this one again:
"Intelligent blonde beer representing the image of bootlegger women of the '30s. La Flacatoune allows us to appriciate our old French, since this word meant "beer" in ancient times.
La Flacatoune is a beer made of pure malt, brewed with yeast of Belgian origine which emports a strong fruitiness to this tasting blonde. The generous aroma hopping and the abundant carbonation makes this beer an excellent apertif!"
Typical explosive Charlevoix head, though this one is a lot more airy and dies down faster than others. A nice finger hangs around to cover the surface. Light-golden body and almost clear, with lots of visible carbonation. Adding the yeast makes it considerably less transparent.
Pretty nice refreshing Belgian-style nose. Lemon, candy malt, spicy Belgian yeast, a touch of spicy herbal hops, astringency, general fruitiness. Smells like the real thing (ie. from Belgium).
Charlevoix really know their Belgian brews; I wouldn't doubt anyone who told me this is from Belgium and not Quebec. It really almost comes off as more of a triple than of a Belgian pale ale; quite similar to their own triple if I remember correctly (I have always had some confusion about the style distinction, however). Light, refreshing and hiding its alcohol well at 7% ABV. Some alcoholic harshness does show up a little as it warms, and on the finsh as well. Lemon, herbal hops, light candy malt, subtle coriander and other trace spices. Probably not as complex as the other stronger Dominus Vobiscums but still nice.
It was a little on the thin side but after pouring the yeast sediment in the body thickened up a bit. Solid medium body with an appropriate lively carbonation.
It's all good! I was surprised to see this one getting less than average reviews for Charlevoix; I can't say that I agree. I think it would fit right in amongst their Dominus Vobiscum line in terms of quality (though maybe it's a little too similar to their Triple). I always have a hard time finding anything bad to say about Charlevoix and am not doing any better here. I'm enjoying this one and would pick it up again if I saw it. A solid Belgian pale/triple.

Flacatoune bought a 500 ml for 5,29$
Look: Clear golden colour with 1 finger of white head,
Smell: Floral notes, orange peel.
Taste: Same as the smell, not very impressed about it
Feel: Medium body, medium carbonation
So overall would i recommend it? Sure, but I was not impressed about that beer.
Would I buy it again ? No

Excellent light Belgian Pale Ale. Extremely surprised by a 7% ABV - was expecting it to be more in line with session beers. Crisp, light refreshing. BPA qualities are there - some spiciness and ester from the yeast. Overall, its very satisfying and manages to stay on the light side without seeming watered-down.

Starts with a large head, but it settles very quickly leaving virtually no lace (just a couple of spots). Strong haze on the dirty gold color.
Smells like warmed milk (lactose?) with a bit of Belgian yeast in the background.
Very Belgian in every way. It starts off with a pale malt. I note the very high carbonation immediately. The hop is subtle, hiding behind the yeast and sour flavors in the swallow. Moderate aftertaste of the same.
