Charlevoix visits Volo.2010 edition bottle. Complex funky aroma. Bit of white soapy head on pale body. Yeasty sweet. Some hops at finish. Above average mouthfeel.Complex,a bit fruity, rich, masterful. Very good drinkability. The 11% alcohol well hidden.

750ml Champagne analogue bottle, 2010 vintage - 'Methode Charlevoise' imprinted on the cork - nice. Been sitting on this one for a while, and methinks my birthday, tree ring measurement aside, is a damned fine occasion to bust out the increasingly dusty flute glassware.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium golden straw hue, with a mountain of thin (exacerbated by glass design, but still) puffy, bubbly white head, which leaves some broad soapy streaks of lace around the glass as it lazily recedes. There remains a vigorous rising effervescence, which is always a sight to behold.

It smells upfront of sweet spices - coriander and candied ginger, mostly - followed by lemon and mandarin orange zest, a bit of earthy yeast, and a light bready, biscuity malt. The taste is sweet, white doughy bready malt (somewhat tightening the ties to a nice bottle of traditional bubbly), applesauce, sushi-garnish ginger, coriander, soothingly juicy citrus, a hint of mildly vegetal yeast, and just an ever so slight warming of the alcohol sort, especially given the proclaimed 22-proof ABV.

Bubbles are as bubbles do, and this has a fairly fine rendering of carbonation, that while not quite in Taittinger's rarefied silky airspace, aspires mightily so, with a smoothness that dabbles further in a soft creaminess. It finishes quite off-dry, stepping well back from the Brut line of questioning, as the grainy malt presses its case, the fruit and spice loiter in a 'please keep looking at me, or I shall verily perish' sort of way, and the heretofore minimal hopping obviously unable to keep up.

There are many aspects of this brew that could recommend this as the real Reims deal, but not so many that I forget what this really is - a beer, a brewski, if a fancied-up one at that. Thankfully, I'm intermittently reminded of this fact, and in a 'let him down easily', subtle manner. Overall, a very pleasant experience, and in a wholly Canadian beer at that - even if it is from a much less familiar style. Anyhow, I'd put this up against the Malheur Bruts and DeuS (?) of the world anytime. 30 bucks a pop in Alberta? Still cheaper than the grapes-based alternative. Tres bien fait encore, Charlevoix.

Bottle: Poured a bright golden color ale with a large foamy head with excellent retention and some very nice lacing. Aroma is a mix between some light warming alcohol notes with sweet candy-like notes and some spicy notes also noticeable. Taste is also a nice enough mix between some sweet candy like malt notes mix with some spicy peppery yeast notes and some light warming alcohol. Easily drinkable though different then Champagne. Maybe a tad too sweet too drink too much by myself but very nice nonetheless.

huge and really light golden in color with loads of carbonation and a huge foam head that settles down lightly and leaves a touch of lacing on the sides.

aroma is far too light, small citrus hops,light grain, and that was about it. it seems to really just not have the direction i was looking for. it was just light on the palate and super carbonation, but the flavor just did not seem to match up with my hopes. a very expensive beer

Pours a thick but mostly translucent yellow amber color, thick stream of tiny bubbles rising from the bottom into the really, really large head. Head don't go nowhere quick and when it does it leaves tons of lacing.

I get the same sweet orange creamsicle type smells I get from other examples of this style, some dry almost vinous yeast, some banana and maybe berry and other light fruitiness, fairly sweet overall.

Opens with pretty intense fruit, mandarin orange and banana and light berry and grape, spices (clove maybe? pepper?), yeast again. This is delicious!

Mouthfeel is also insanely good, crazy fine but intense carbonation, creamy and soft and so drinkable.

Thanks to Jason for sharing this rarity. Served in a Duvel tulip.

A - Not quite as explosive as some other champagne beers I've had, although the cork makes a nice satisfying pop followed by the usual gun-smoke. Pours with a few fingers of white foam that eventually settles to a thin cap and leaves tiny spots of lace. Transparent golden peach body.

S - Stone fruits, estery yeast, some mustiness, and light alcohol spice. Very dry champagne aroma, with perhaps a bit of lemon. Unlike Midnight Sun Jupiter, which is based on a tripel, this seems to be more Saison or Belgian Strong Pale in character.

T - Taste has a lot of bread, peppery yeast, and a low amount of stone fruit and honey sweetness. It's a little tough to break out of the box and avoid tautological descriptors like "champagne".

M - Very dry, zesty champagne carbonation that is lively but eschews harshness. Medium body that seems appropriate for the style, but might seem thin if it were say a stout or barleywine.

D - It's hard to compare this to much, as I've only had one other champagne beer. This is definitely drier and less sweet than Jupiter. Dangerously quaffable for the 11% ABV.

750ml corked and caged bottle poured into abbey glass july18 2010

A clear golden yellow with some very active carbonation floating up to a dense two finger head that has great retention slowly falling to 1/4in film leaving no lace

S a little peachy with other tropical fruits, some yeast and a whiff of booze but no where near the 11%

T pear, pineapple, some more yeast and some spice I can't place with some alcohol, fairly dry and overall a tasty beer

M quite alive with a heavy amount of carbonation keeping it rather light and fluffy, just a little bite and a mild booze burn but most enjoyable

D a little to easy to drink if you ask me, perhaps not a bad thing there was only a bottle of this poured that mourning (yes I said mourning) because this one could wreck you

A great way to start off the drunk by noon British Open Sunday tasting at hoser's house. Thanks to hoser for this one it's a beer everybody should try if they get the chance

750 ml corked and caged champagne bottle, thanks to Goldorak for the hookup, 2010 version.

Pours a clear light amber, some orange highlights, very thick and rocky bone white head forms and slowly settles down to a medium ring and layer around the glass, some lace spots stick, looks good.

Smell is nice, very sweet and malty, honey, candi sugar, lightly toasted and biscuity, caramel, lightly spicy, alcohol, some clove and cinnamon, pretty intense nose, big sweet and boozy, but refined.

Taste is similar, pretty sweet up front, boozy, almost a malt liquor like punch, some cinnamon and clove spiciness, candi sugar, honey sweetness, caramel, sugary, white wine, lightly oaky, vanilla, like a homeless guy in an Armani suit.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with high carbonation. Pretty chewy, boozy, big and brash but also soft and refined, its a good one. Thanks Martin!

750ml bottle provided by Freud...Pours a light honey gold, not much to look at. Light off white head, ok retention, poor lacing...The aroma is very sweet, similar to champagne honey and yeast mostly...The taste and feel do a great job of simulating champagne, probably the best I've had. The feel is dry with slight bubbly carbonation, the taste is yeasty honey.

A pretty good beer style wise, but not great overall. If your in Canada try it, but don't go above and beyond to obtain.

2010 bottle and long time want courtesy of the awesome trader, wordemupg.

Appearance. Pours a fairly clear, yellow gold topped with two+ fingers of frothy white head.

Smell. Fruity and lightly spicy Belgian yeast, mainly apples and pears but also a touch of citrus, and sweet light malts.

Taste. Appleas and sweet light malts with some fruity Belgian yeast along with a dry yeast funk. A touch of clove as well.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body, very full carbonation.

Overall. A very well made beer but not really my cup of tea. Mouthfeel and strong yeast esters are a little much for this guy but glad to have tried it.

2009 vintage. LCBO sticker pegs this at 9.6% rather than 11.

Beer is orange/amber in colour. Moderately sized white head. Head fades quickly but never leaves, always a white bubbly cover. Lots of bubbles at all times. Some lace.

Unusual and lovely smell. Grape, tropical fruit, yeast, bread, perfume. A bit sweet. Not like any beer I have encountered. Certainly reminiscent of champagne, and really enveloping.

Like the nose, the taste is excellent. Light fruit, tropical fruit, green grape, bread, biscuit, and a bit sweet. Finish is biscuity with loads of light fruit. Spices that I find difficult to place, but white pepper seems to stick out. Really lovely.

Overall, simply terrific. Really a killer beer. Loved every drop.

***2010 Vintage***

Had this a few hours after Zoe, my second daughter, was born.

Poured from a 750ml. bottle, best before end of 2012.

Appearance: A stark white head, massive & fluffy with a ginger ale colored body.

Smell: Fruity esters with a different kind of yeast than regular Belgian ales. Good but not very strong.

Taste: Champagne-like for sure with some cinnamon, orange peel and a light breadiness. Not as expansive as i would have expected.

Mouthfeel: Bursting with vitality, strong and very comfortable in the palate.

Overall: It is certainly good but i was let down somewhat.

A contribution by jrallen34 to our All Hallow's Eve tasting.

A - Some foam with a pretty transparent yellowish hue. Looks a lot like champagne, which was interesting as it is one of my rare experiences with this style.

S - Phenol qualities, a little bit of sweet fruit, very strong precense of champagne yeast, which makes sense of course.

T - A little sweet, with a very dry champagne taste. Not really sure what else to say on this one, i wouldn't mind it as a New Year's toast, as it is a nice blend of champagne and beer, but not really a style I prefer.

M - Super dry, light and effervescent.

D - It's a sipper, and fairly complex, but not hightly drinkable.

10:30 in the morning and the cork flies off this fine bottle of champagne-style beer with a loud pop. A sparkling clear golden pour kicks up a mousse of pure white head, which is maintained by a steady stream of bubbles. Awesome retention and great lacing - put this in a flute and it would look far superior to a regular champagne! Beautiful fruity aroma is chock-full of pear and peach, with a peppery spiciness, and rich, complex yeast spiciness.

Great fruitiness with the pear coming to dominate. Banana, mango and peach also slip in, and a slight lemon and grassiness from the hops adds a nice bite to the finish, which is bursting with pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. Paired with a plate of Quebec cheese this got even better and served as a near-perfect compliment which Garrett Oliver would be proud of! Warming at the back of the throat, but with a perfectly judged body that's both crisp, dry and pleasingly carbonated.

Watch out for this one - its the best offering from this brewery so far and I'd happily take this over the Lupulus, which I thought was a near-perfect brew. I'm not sure how it would play out with a bigger serving size, and the spiciness may begin to detract a little, but this was the perfect way to start off another day working at Mondial.

From a 750 ml green magnum, caged and corked with gold foil around cap and neck. Pours out a cloudy dark golden hue, apparent suspended particles spotted. Tall intense initial head at first upon the pour, settles down eventually to a tight creamy white cap.

Coriander, ginger and sweet orange greet the nose first, some lemon zest as well, along with sweet grains and a mild yeasty twang.

The flavour is an explosion of Belgian goodness, or at least my predetermined version of it. Sweet orange, ginger, coriander, pear, white pepper is the initial impression, sweet wheaty grains, dry spice on the finish. Reminds me a lot of the Unibroue 10 and 11 combined.

Light-bodied mouthfeel, silky smooth texture that is balanced out by an aggressive carbonation.

This stuff is gorgeous, and even tops DeuS in my opinion (although they're neck and neck in price range), perfect for special occasions or bringing to dinner parties, or celebrating whatever you wish to pay homage to. An equally beautiful sipper for a long afternoon or evening off. Charlevoix produces liquid gold with this.

2010 vintage shared with sflpunk as an excellent night cap and was frightfully easy to drink.

as the style suggests the beer is somewhere between champagne and beer. pops like a champagne and pours like a champagne but has the longevity of something less ester limiting. a bit deeper and huh terminal. the malt lasts into different qualities as the beer sits. expands. nose is something more advanced than just expected apple notes. pear, apricot, lychee, and peach as set clean with a dry note of herb. too subtle but has the astringent mineral quality of oregano. palate is brisk and in the way that a beer would spend 15 seconds in your mouth changing. there is so much linkage flavors here of fruit esters and dryness that i just stare at the glass. nots of black pepper and honey finish. very subtle christmas herbs. balanced sweet. if it fell off a tree and was harvested between late summer and autumn it has a note of that fruit in it. i think we had it at the perfect time of year.

the next i'm having with a game bird... perfect for thanksgiving.

750 mL bottle shared with friends at a recent barbecue. We wanted enjoy this one right, so it was our first brew of the evening.

Poured into a large white wine glass. Lovely hazy golden hue, effervescent champagne-like carbonation, which created a fantastic head that just wouldn't die. Loads of lacing and great body.

The nose is a lovely mix of traditional tripel notes (yeast, citrus, pepper, coriander and spices) and some other great stuff - white wine, flowers, orange, a bit of honey and sugar. Lots to discover with every whiff.

Light and airy, yet malty and fruity, Dominus Vobiscum Brut is exactly what a brut should be. This brew has so much going for it - it drinks like a tripel that's been infused with champagne, to the improvement of both elements. Lemon, Belgian yeast, flowers, wine, orange, sugar, and probably a great deal more flavors that I couldn't really identify, but much better beer connaisseurs than I could probably uncover. What I particularly loved about this beer was that it has something that will appeal to most folks. Even hardened anti-beer folks at our bbq were wowed by this brew.

Effervescent, strong carbonation, creamy mouthfeel.

I tip my cap to you, Charlevoix. This brew was terrific.
