Was in CHI this weekend, had a few hours to kill Saturday afternoon, so I hopped the Blue Line to Bucktown to try The Map Room. I had read the reviews on Beerfly and other review sites, and they seemed to be all over the place. Many fans of the place, some not so much. Due to the wide variety in the rDev on Beerfly, I was ready to expect anything.

I arrived at around 2:30 Saturday and was able to obtain a seat at the bar. The room itself looked like a cozy neighborhood watering hole. Bar running down the right side of the place to about halfway down, the sides and back feature tables. Not enormous, but not tiny either; pretty much perfect size for my taste in tavern size. As the name suggests the walls are covered with old National Geographic pull-out maps. The 'world-travelling' gimmick works for me.

The crowd appeared to me to be 25+, at least in the few hours I was there on a weekend afternoon. A nice mix of older neighborhood residents & thirtysomething professionals. Had a couple friendly conversations with other patrons about such subjects as homebrewing, the Chicago Bulls, and where in the neighborhood to obtain the best Italian hot beef sandwich.

The beer selection is great. A couple dozen taps with what looked like a couple hundred bottles as well. All of them featuring a great American or Euro craft beer. I have been in other beer bars with similar or larger selection, but it appeared that whomever selects the tap lines does so with care to include a comfortable variety of styles and breweries.

Prices were not bad at all. I have seen other reviewers complain about the prices, but Map Room is actually cheaper than many 'good beer' taverns in St Paul. $5 or $6 for a pint of craft beer is not too expensive. They also feature a beer of the month for $4 a pint. On Saturday, it happened to be Arcadia ESB (tasty, by the way).

They do not sell food, but they had a few free items toward the back for customers to eat.

The service was excellent. From the two bartenders who were quick and friendly, to the 'eccentric' busboy/barback (I think his name is Woody?), all were top-notch. A special mention goes to the owner, who's name unfortunately escapes me. She took her time to sit and talk to me and obtain my opinion of her establishment. What a classy lady, and an example to anyone who would think about opening their own business.

About the only downside was that they do not accept cards, it is cash-only. That and the fact that I live 2 states over.

Overall, The Map Room is worthy of all the praise it receives on Beerfly and other websites. Nice neighborhood, Good Room, Great beers, Outstanding service. Comparable, if not better than, other great beer bars I have visited in the Midwest.

Love this place. Outstanding selection - with a heavy bias for high-octane brew and belgians. Great vibe. Appealing as both a place to relax with a brew or get some work done on a Friday afternoon as it is a place to spend an entire evening exploring delicious brews.

My favorite Chicago multi-tap, and a place I make it a point to visit several times on every Chicago visit. Great draft and bottle selection, with new items almost daily. Nice, beer-savvy people on both sides of the bar.

Oh, and they now do take credit cards.

This is my neighborhood bar... a mere two blocks away from my home of the last 15 years.
The Map Room is widely known and loved by most. It was a pioneer in brining Chicagoans a wide variety of craft beers.

I started going in 2003 after returning from England and finding out that The Map Room had an engine that poured English beers from a cask.

My only suggestion is that they should serve flights.

Visit The Map Room when you are in Chicago ... But, know that there is much more in what many here believe is becoming the center of the third generation of craft brewers.

My go-to, very first stop when visiting Chicago. Possibly tied with Belmont Station in Portland as my favorite place in the US to bend my elbow. Fantastic beer selection, well-educated staff and, well...it is truly a Map Room!

Map room consistently has a solid tap list and more than a few interesting bottles. Only issue is that they seem to run out of what you are looking for quite often. Not to worry! A quick chat with the bartender will result in you finding a new beer or even brewery that is just as good, or better, than the one you were originally seeking.

This is a good craft brew place to visit. Seemed to be set up like a coffee shop, but with craft beer. Meaning, ample space to set up your labtop and get some work done, while enjoying local brews. The service was fine, but slow, but that was mostly due to another patron and a long winded story. Selection was fine, and they had several local options. But the selection didn't blow me away. The place came highly recommended, and while not quite living up to hype, I'd still recommend checking out.
