Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This black ale fermented with our own sour culture on top of second use cherries in the traditional style of a kriek lambic is a free will original. Notes of chocolate and a mild roasty character are combined with the funk and complexity of wild yeast, and balanced by a clean sour note that follows you through the finish, where the cherry character shines through. Pair this beer with Korean bbq or rich creamy pasta dishes.

Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a dark black cherry skin color with a thin white foamy head that quickly fell off. Mild sliding lace. The aroma had some sweet to sour to tart blend of dark fruits (black cherries, plums, and dates), light milk chocolate and a pinch of dark chocolate at the end. The flavor was somewhat tart with a touch of the bitter between the dark chocolate and the dark fruits. Some sour, light notes of apple cider vinegar. Aftertaste leaned sweet. Finish was malty but tart and sour as well. The palate was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Sour harshness was tame. Overall, not bad, I guess this is their version of a Flemish sour brown ale? Well, works for me.

Pours between dark brown and ruby red with okay head. Smells of sour crisp dried fruits. Taste is same, but heavy on vinegarette. Slightly heavier on the vinegar taste than perfect, but still very good.

2015 375 ml bottle was poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: A one finger off white head was poured that reduced to a thin layer quickly. Not surprised. It is a dark black color with no vision of anything.

Smell: Funk, sour, cherries, powdery chocolate, and some roastiness.

Taste: Tart and sour notes up front. Some cherry sweetness, chocolate, and roasted notes in there too. Light bitterness in the rear.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, tart, sour, pucker, and medium to high carbonation, and a little bitterness.

Overall: Nice take on the kriek lambic style. Good funk, cherries, and chocolate kept things interesting.
