a really neat little beer here, a lambic type brown ale, something i have not seen much of before, and a blended one at that. far more compelling than most of the american made flanders types i have had, more layers than the oud bruin i am used to, and just a really solid beer, thanks to my homie for sharing this with me. its a little hazy and cocoa colored on the pour with some red lowlights and a nice airy tan head with great retention. aroma is sharply acidic, but not as vinegar forward as some of the more well known examples of the style. the maturity and the wood are immediately obvious. i get oak tannins, musty funk like an old lambic, and even bourbon, with a corny sweet and vanilla richness to it. red wine notes in the flavor, lots of that concentrated tangy fruitiness, more wood, citrus even. there is a wonderfully complex yeast nature to this, fully wild tasting to me, with a sharp bacterial side and a woody funky farmy brett aspect too, the relative depth of each vintage contributing a lot to this blend, almost like a brown gueuze or something. plenty of malt flavor too, wheaty it seems, but also chocolate notes too, toasted and hearty. very sour, i couldnt drink a ton of this, but it really is something quite different, and a vastly superior beer to anything else i have had from free will in the past. i really dug this one!

Free Will Brewing Co. "Olly"
on tap @ Top Hops Beer Shop, New York, NY on 16 April 2016
$12 / goblet

Notes: Clear chestnut brown body beneath a short creamy head of khaki that drops quickly and leaves limited lacing. (as is common with sour beers). The aroma expresses caramel and brown sugar with a nuttiness, a metallic edge of acidity, and fruit. The flavor is sharply tart but not bracing, fruity with black cherry, and less caramelish than the nose suggests but still with some brown sugar. It finishes dry and acidic, but clears fairly quickly, leaving you ready for another sip. Light-medium in body and zesty. Interesting and refreshing. World class - on par with many examples of the style coming out of Belgium.

Appears dark rust red-brown with minimal head. Smells of funk, sour, and malt. Taste is the same, with some sour apple and grape notes and a musty woodiness coming out. Feel is thick but crisp and doesn't linger too much in the mouth. Pretty tasty for not being a preferred style. I'm not a huge sour fan but I keep coming back for more from Free Will.

-ruby-brown bottle pour is murky with almost no visible carbonation. Aroma is sour with some musty notes and Brett funk. The flavors are of sour fruit: apple, raisins... a pronounced vinous quality and a soft contribution from the oak barrel aging provides smoothness and balance. This is not overly acidic. The mouthfeel is somewhat thin with appropriate carbonation. I very much like this and look forward to another find from Free Will.

Pour is a dark brown with dark reddish hue. Tannish off white head with significant retention.
Nose is sour and tart berry , some funk
First sip is tart, some oak. Nice balance between the acidity and big oak and tart fruit.
For a sour, it's incredibly clean with no lingering tartness.
Really nice offering.

12 oz pour from draft. Tasted at the brewery on Sour Sunday.

L - dark brown in color with light passing. Very little lacing with a ring around the glass

S - funky sour character. Hints of dark malt but overall a funky sour

T - super funky sour patch kids tartness with brown ale character intertwined. Pineapple and tart fruit with chocolate

F - super pucker feel, super tart all the way through. Way past sweetness and full onto tart.

O - big win for sour beer fans. A different path from the fruit sours and really complements the dark sour style. No one does sours better than Free Will. Cheers!

On tap poured into a goblet. No head. Light ruby brown and clear. Aroma of malt vinegar and stewed prunes. Mouthfeel is light but without carbonation so it stays put. Taste is very nice. Soft with flavors more fruity than the aroma. Brett funkiness takes over. Sourness comes through and finishes dry with some lactic acid. It leaves your palatte wanting another sip.
