Pours black, with a reddish-brown hue, and a thin, dark-tan head that quickly fizzes away into a crown.
Huge root beer and sarsaparilla in the nose — spicy, like the real thing.
The spicy sarsaparilla continues to the taste, with some light nuttiness beneath. Earthy bitterness in the finish. Moderate alcohol burn.
On the thin side of medium bodied for the style. Still fairly creamy, with soda pop carbonation.
Previous year’s variants were fairly restrained. The sarsaparilla is over the top here, dominating all other qualities. It delivers as advertised, but not as good as the original; not as well-integrated as I’d hoped for. Still, sort of grew on me after half a glass. If you liked “Not Your Father’s Root Beer,” you should especially love this.
