Served on tap into a UK pint glass at the Roadside Tavern, the only outlet for this beer, Lisdoonvarna Co Clare, Eire
Worth also noting that at present (Jan '12) it is only available on tap and no bottling takes place
They are a friendly bunch and whilst I didn't broach the subject I'm sure they'd be more than hapy to fill a growler or some form of recepticle for you!
Pours to a dark black colour with dark brown hues around the edge when held to the light. A monster finger and a half of creamy white head domiates the glass! The head subsided during drinking but there was still a good half finger in place at the end of the pint!
A Rich roasted malt aroma hit the nose with a hint of coffee
Rich, slightly burnt malt and sugar on the palate, with a roasted coffee taste in the background, no need to complicate this fine beer with anything else!
Good mouthfeel, smooth, rich, creamy, and a most welcome break from Guinness
Overall a very good stout rich in flavour and aroma
One thing to point out (along with all the Burren beers), they didn't detail the ABV on the pump clips and admitted to tweaking production slightly, 'as and when', so certain batches come out stronger than others!
The older barman simply stated that all the beers are a little stronger than the commercial beers on tap (not very helpful) and the second younger bar man was a little more specific in saying that the 'Black' was typically in the mid 4. something % range but maybe a little above or below this level from time to time. I got the impression they tweaked this one less than the others - sacred stout!

Brewed by in a micro brewery above the pub The Roadside Tavern in Lisdoonvarna Co Clare He brews 3, the red ale, a gold (a lager) and this the Dark. All only on draught no bottling. A pint with good head and not quite as bitter as the big G. Staff were a bit hasy as to abv quoting about 5%. Was on holidays in the area for a few days and got a quick tour of the brewery. Be sure to ask to see it if you are there.

a dark brown almost black stout with a reasonable head - can't compete with a Guinness head but acceptable. smelled of lightly roasted malt and very light hops. Taste was much richer than that of the best selling stout, mild roasted malt with some caramel flavors - light hops at the end. Both my wife and I agree this is an excellent stout - the best we had in Ireland.

A: Dark rubby in colour but you do have to hold it close to the light to see this.
S: Bread/biscuit and fruity (same as their Red Ale)
T: Low bread flavour, bitterness comes in and then is taken away by the sweetness.
M: smooth with a low to med carb
O: I'm very undecided about this beer. I found the Stout and the Red ale to be way too similar and I attribute this to the fact that the same yeast is used for both. Yeast has too much presence in the stout and overshadows the roast and bitterness.
