22 oz. bottle, with Batch #219-220 printed on the label. Bottled 10/08/2013 according to another user, so this bomber has been aged for over a year now. Finally getting around to trying this offering from Pipeworks; acquired at the local Foremost Liquors who doesn't know how to sell Pipeworks beer. Thanks for giving this one to me on the low.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours an almost opaque black with hues of ruby showing through when held to the light. Carbonation seems to have held up just fine, it still manages to conjure about a finger of tan head that thins to a ring around the glass. Some minor sticky spotty lacing when given a swirl.

S - The aroma is definitely unique, that is for certain. Initial blast of sweet potatoes hits me in the face, followed by notes of brown sugar, curry, vanilla, caramel, cream, and notes of cola. Some very minor alcohol fumes remain.

T - Taste is comprised of smooth cream, mellowed chocolate, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar. The sweet potato lends a distinct smooth / earthiness to the beer that I'm hard-pressed to describe. Minor herbal / vegetal / spice rack notes are noticeable, but indistinct, and I'm not really pulling out anything I would describe as coconut.

M - The feel is smooth & creamy. Perhaps the carb has fallen off just a tad, but the carbonation retained itself well. Smooth, creamy, & easy-drinking despite the moderately high 9.50% abv. If you didn't know how high the abv was, this stuff could get you into trouble.

Overall, I am glad that I finally got around to trying this unique offering from Pipeworks. Not their greatest work by far, and I can't say that I would seek it out again, but the flavors meld wonderfully, and the bottles have held up nicely. Grab one while you still can.

Pipeworks Batata Obscura -----4/5.

Pours hazed brown with a disappearing head. Minimal lacing.

The smell is of cinnamon, clove, cocoa, vanilla, sweet potato and coconut. Interesting mix. Quite a bit going on - almost too much.

Spices override the porter, and to me they clash a bit too much. Same spices in the nose. Cinnamon is strong in the finish. Alcohol is well-hidden.

It is somewhat astringent and the spices linger.

An interesting beer. Too much going on in different directions. Things didn't come together too well for me. Still, I'm glad I tried it. It is unique.

Received in trade from Kevinpitts. Thanks my friend. Poured into my tulip.
A – Root beer brown on pour with a tiny bit of off white head that receded quickly.
S – Clove and vanilla are the first smells I pick up. Light chocolate as well.
T – Now I get sweet potato mixed with cinnamon immediately. Light and sweet coconut taste follows after. It’s a bit of an odd match but it’s actually tasty. Light chocolate in the mix with some nutmeg flavor. Has just a bite of bitterness at the end.
M – Medium bodied with ample carbonation. Lively on the palate and a bit drying.
O – This is an interesting brew for sure. It doesn’t really taste like anything I have had before and I dig that. Interesting flavor meld and quite tasty. ABV is unnoticeable. Pipeworks for the win.

Very pleasant aroma from the spices. Really nice taste, although I admit to not being able to single out the sweet potato or coconut. A little bit thin for an Imperial porter. Enjoyable, but not necessarily a repeater.
