Pipeworks Brewing Company
Illinois, United States

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Imperial Porter is brewed in memory of our neighbor and label artist's best four-legged friend, Thor. Thor was a big, floppy, and smiley mastif who loved going on walks to the brewery, and parking his slobbery head down on the sidewalk to smell what's cooking. A portion of all proceeds from The Mighty Thor benefit the Great Lakes Mastif Rescue.

Pours really thick and black in color with a thin tan head that dissipates to a film over the top.

Smell is pretty good. There are big chocolate malt that is forward along with a fair amount of charcoal roasted aroma. There is a lighter creamy aroma and dark fruit aroma.

Taste is pretty good and follows the nose. Lots of chocolate malt is forward along with a moderate charcoal bitterness. There is a slight creamy flavor that've detectable through the chalky charcoal bitterness.

Mouthfeel is huge. Really big body and thick feel. Huge malty stickiness is balanced with big amounts of charred bitterness. A sipping beer for sure.

Inky black color and lets no light pass. No head and has a flat appearance.

Not much to the aroma. Smells like a tootsie roll and light roast.

Same with the flavor, but slightly hopped and gives off a dark berry flavor.

Great mouthfeel. Very smooth and creamy.

Good beer, but not much depth. The mouthfeel is the highlight.

22 oz. bottle, Batch #320/321 printed on the label. Another new beer to me from Pipeworks, this one describes itself as an imperial porter. Found this beauty at the local Binny's.

Poured into a Duvel tulip, per the death of my snifter.

A - It pours a dark dark dark mahogany black colored body. Opaque in the glass with about a finger of dark bubbly mocha head. Reddish hues when held to the light. Scattered bubbly lacing.

S - The aroma has a lot going on. Initially, I got a lot of musty yeasty sort of funk, but it gives way to layers of cocoa, chocolate, cream, vanilla, & roasted nuttiness.

T - Taste follows the nose - powdery chocolate / cocoa, fudge, vanilla, coffee bean roast, some yeast presence, mild alcohol warmth, indistinct dark fruitiness. Very delicious.

M - The feel is sticky, smooth, & creamy. Lots of chocolate / roast lingering on the palate. Medium-full bodied with good carbonation.

Overall, another wonderful and interesting beer from Pipeworks. These guys make some of the best stouts I've ever had, so it obviously makes sense they would be able to do a porter well. Highly recommended; they should consider brewing this again.

This beer made me angry. It looked and smelled good, but was an aggressive combination of unbalanced, overeager un-flavor. Heavy booze and bitterness upfront. After it warmed it left a aftertaste that was like a pot of dishwater that had a handful of crappy chocolate chips and a shot of everclear poured into it.
