Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
An open slot on the brew schedule means that there is space to get creative and make something weird. Gerrit, because he has a strong, deep, passionate love for chocolate covered pretzels, decided to make a beer that was chocolatey, rich, and subtly salty, just like the object of his affection. He concocted up a recipe that included smoked malt, lots of chocolate malt, and even pretzels in the mash. It was one seriously good smelling day in the brewhouse. "Weirdo" is definitely this beer's middle name

A: Really dark in color with small to no head. Really nice lacing that slowly comes down the glass.

S: Upfront I get a lot of the chocolate then fades to a slight smokiness. Without knowing it was brewed with pretzels I'm not sure I would pick it up but when looking for it I can get a bit of that bready pretzel aroma. All in all a really nice aromatic beer.

T: Nice smoked notes upfront but not overpowering at all. After the smoke you get some chocolate, dark fruit, and alcohol. Not really any pretzel but tasty still.

M: Really nice slick and oily texture with a full body. Slight sweetness but as expected.

Pretty sweet stout. Well rounded. Not overly roasty or hoppy... super balanced. I get some hints of the pretzel and chocolate, but it won't taste like your eating a chocolate covered pretzel (unless you are also eating a chocolate covered pretzel while drinking this). Overall its a pretty good stout.

Has a smoke/salt profile that mirrors the chocolate dipped pretzel theme. I feel this beer might work with a little aging to it, to balance out the flavors and bring out more of the roasted and smoked malt elements. The sweet and saltiness takes over here for now. Would perhaps pair with a chocolate mousse or other such dessert.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours a very dark brown with minimal froth.

(S)- Definitely chocolatey with a tiny hint of salty grains. The smokiness is nice without being overpowering.

(T)- I like that this makes sense. Its got the smokiness, its got the chocolate, and its got the salty yet bready pretzel to it. A bit odd altogether but each ingredient can be picked out and appreciated as a whole.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. The flavors are odd, but together makes it almost savory.

(O)- Definitely odd and unique but it works and is enjoyable.

Wonderful complexity for a porter. Thick mouthfeel. Smokey, slightly sweet. Dark chocolate and a hint of salt. Comparing this to similar beers such as imperial doughnut break it holds up very well. This is smooth and gives no hint of its 9.5% abv. I'm ordering more.
