Brewed by:
Pipeworks Brewing Company
Illinois, United States

Style: English Old Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewed with our pals over at Forbidden Root Fine Botanic Beers, this is not not an old ale inspired by pipe tobacco. In order to emulate the earthy, sweet, aroma of fresh pipe tobacco, we brewed this balanced, malty ale with cherry stems, coco shells, lily flowers, and peru balsam. It is the perfect beverage on a cooler fall evening.

22 ounce bottle, batch 511-512, into a PW snifter.

Pours a medium amber with a small head, clingy foam throughout. Smell is malt, bread, plums, cherries and a hint of tobacco, although that could be subliminal from the label. Taste is somewhat malt forward, some caramel, raisins, cherries, a touch of wine and a general spiciness- from what, I can't define. There's a lot going on here. Good body, well carbonated, has a refreshing feel for the style.

Nice twist on an Old Ale, but definitely within the style. Flavorful and complex, very enjoyable.

Served in a tumbler.

Yeah, I was drawn in by the Magritte reference, but I stayed for the beer "inspired by pipe tobacco". Damn my curiosity... Anyway, this stuff pours a deep sienna topped by a finger of sandstone foam. The nose comprises earthy greenery, a vague mix of spices, light chocolate powder, a hint of vanilla, and a strange fruit character that I can't quite pin down in the background. The taste sorta reminds me of a cherry-vanilla-infused root beer or Dr. Pepper, just less sweet and a bit earthier. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a liquid feel. Overall, I didn't get any tobacco character from this, but the resulting mix of what they through in does come out as a decent spiced old ale.

Appearance: This beer pours a deep mahogany color. When held up to the light, it reveals some really nice garnet hues. About two or more fingers of a tannish head form during an semi-aggressive pour. The retention is weak and the head fades to a thin ring around the edge of the glass. The beer is dark and a little bit hazy and completely opaque. (3.75/5)

Smell: The smell starts off with a little bit of with a slightly tart fruitiness. Immediately afterwards it gets over taken by a strong scent of earthy and smoky tones. Some slight alcohol comes through along with some oak and maybe a touch of vanilla. There is quite a bit of spice to it that I am not familiar with. (4.25/5)

Taste: This one opens up with subtle smoky wood flavors. This melds into a fruity tartness. The fruit flavor varies from cherry mixed with just a little bit of berry. Towards the end it returns to more smoky and earthy flavors. Spices are present on the backend with just a little bit of alcohol bitterness. (4.5/5)

Mouthfeel: The sweetness on this one is fairly low. Bitterness is fairly moderate and comes off as earthy and slightly like tobacco smoke. The body is medium full and leaves behind a sticky, smoky earthiness. Alcohol lends a little bit of warmth. Leaves a little bit of a bitterness behind. (4.5/5)

Overall: This is certainly the most unique old ale I have had. At first it was strange and I wasn't to sure about it, but it opens up very nicely. It lacks in sweetness, but the combination of the slightly tart fruitiness and the oaky, smoky and earthy flavors works extremely well. The balance on it is very nice as is the lingering taste.
