Notes / Commercial Description:
The first sip of something familiar
The reminder chaos creates calm
Bottled ideas of minds meeting for the first time
The aftermath of striving for passed perfection
This is the creation of those with passion and heart
- Poem by Sae Lim

We collaborated with the chefs at the intensely delicious and innovative Japanese inspired restauraunt, Kaizan, to create this complex, and balanced beverage. This pale ale has bright citrus and pine notes from yuzu, an eastern asian fruit, which is balanced by the subtle cucumber aroma from the kombu, a tea made from Japanese sea weed, arame. The white miso adds a gentle salinity and slight umami flavor.

Pours a brilliant dandelion yellow with just a tad of frothy white foam.

Some funkiness, melon, cucumber, and some spice.

Wow, melon and cucumber right hook the tongue with some pine to note and an earthy funkiness on the backend.

Mouthfeel is light and refreshing, but rather bitter on the finish.

Overall, an interesting beer to say the least, worth a shot.

Thanks to Aaron for sharing this one!
Pours a slightly hazed orange with frothy foam around the edges. Spotty lace sticks to the sides and a thin collar forms on the opposite side of the glass.

Yeast is the first thin I smell, which overshadows the more exotic ingredients, though it has a general cirtric profile.

Taste is much more interesting, big yuzu citrus peel bitterness, lemon rind, faint tea leaves. Lasting citric bitterness remains in the aftertaste. There aren't really any savory umami qualities from the miso, but that's ok. Well carbonated with a light to medium body, fairly dry and seemingly would make a nice pairing with food. Overall worth a try.

22 oz. bottle, with Batch #529 printed on the bottle. Another new imperial pale ale creation from the geniuses at Pipeworks, this one brewed with yuzu, white miso, and kombu, which I guess is a type of tea made with seaweed. These guys never fail to push the envelope in terms of exotic ingredients. Awesome bottle art as always.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - It pours a bright, lightly murky golden yellow-orange colored body with active carbonation and two fingers of thick frothy white head. Leaves behind good sticky spotty lacing. Looks very nice. Some sediment creeps out from the bottom of the bottle.

S - The aroma is extremely citric; borderline lemony tartness from the yuzu fruit. Herbal, floral, & earthy underneath the citrus. Perhaps lightly peppery. Either way, a very juicy, unique, and mouth-watering aroma, and I am absolutely in love with it.

T - Taste follows the nose - juicy, citric, and delicious. A lemony citrus juice flavor is imparted from the exotic yuzu. Lightly bready, malty, grainy, & sweet. Slight alcohol content noticeable. Herbal & earthy, but nothing that I would identify as seaweed or tea, and I'm not entirely sure what white miso is supposed to taste like in the first place. Either way, it's very delicious.

M - Smooth, juicy, crisp, & creamy. Medium bodied, with excellent carbonation, and very easy-drinking despite the high 9.00% abv.

Overall, another excellent imperial pale ale from the masters at Pipeworks, making more good use of more exotic ingredients. One of the more memorable and unique offerings I've had from them in a while; definitely looking forward to what comes next. Recommended.

Had this on 2015-01-18 in Columbia, PA from a 22 oz bottle

A - Very clear gold with a 1-finger white head that fades pretty quickly with mild lace.

S - Apple cider that is just starting to ferment, vanilla, light malt. Pretty sweet smelling.

T - Hard to characterize but I'll try. Sweet and bitter fruit. Leafy, bitter vegetable. Fermented bean. White pepper. Subtle blending of these flavors. Lingering non-hop bitterness with some acidity.

M - Light-medium body and carbonation. Quite dry.

O - Well made. Interesting set of flavors although not a something I'd look for on a regular basis.

Pours light straw yellow with lots of bubbles and a good one finger head that retains nicely. Smell has some tropical fruity hops forward along a slight hint of miso, some lemon and faint spicy yeast aroma. Taste follows the nose with some citrus and slightly herbal hop presence along with a light tart lemon flavor. Moderate amounts of sweetness and an interesting lingering burn on the tongue in the finish. Mouthfeel is crisp sweet bitter and somewhat on the thinner side for a pw brew.
