The last bottle, I think, from our visit to the lair of Al Capone in September. 22 oz. bottle split with the wife while chatting with our daughter visiting from her first semester of college. She cute!

The pour is black, with a mild head that audibly snaps. Smells like bourbon & vanilla & sugar. Add in baseball & this would be perfect.

The Abduction – if ET served this, I’d volunteer for an alien probe or two. Heavy bourbon right between the eyes, with a chaser of vanilla. Light char, much booze. Full & dry. Probably too sweet to take down an entire bottle, but damn, I’d like to get the canker sores trying.

This charms on first sip & never lets up – it’s the epitome of a straight-up barrel aged stout created with skill & aplomb that proves complexity is overrated. Pure top shelf.

First stout from Pipeworks. Thanks Greg for the trade! This beer is a contender in the stout arena. Nearly zero head on black opaque oil in the glass. Thick and smooth on the palate. Wholesome and rich chocolate fudge and bourbon with a touch of vanilla quality. Required either more carbonation, coffee, or bitterness to balance it better and a touch more aging on my part to reduce the booziness a bit. Solid.

Bottled May 2017; drank 6/10/17 @ the Yarchives.

Black appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small dark tan head; no lace.

Oak, milk chocolate & bourbon heat notes in the nose.

Oak, milk chocolate & bourbon notes in the nose.

Thick, smooth mouthfeel.

Oak & milk chocolate flavors up front; mild cream & strong booze heat notes on the finish.

These need some time; I've learned 6 months really helps a Pipeworks barrel aged beer; this is too hot.

2018 Winter release from a bomber. BA The Abduction is a big, boozy joyride through Flavor Country. Thick and viscous, long-lasting legs when swirled. Fudge, bourbon heat, vanilla, very mild soy and wine tannins.

On draft. Dark black body. One finger mocha head. Smell is dark chocolate, big whiskey, oak, light smoke, milk chocolate, touch of espresso. Boozy and sweet. Tough to drink more than a few ounces at a time. I think tempering this one with adjuncts such as coffee helps a lot. Medium in body, not as big and fudgy as I expected it to be. Good carbonation. Solid BA stout, but just not enough going on in the back beyond the boozy heat to do this any favors.

L: black with no head on a hard pour.
S: big bourbon
T: bourbon and small chocolate
F: medium body
O: I really enjoyed this as I like to be smashed in the face with bourbon. Not overly complex, but I'd be very happy to revisit.

Edit: Was able to get more head on last half of bottle as it warmed. Giggity

L: Pours a very dark black. Virtually no head.
S: Lots of bourbon and vanilla smells.
T: Delightful. Rich, complex. Some coffee taste even in the regular. Roasty. Boozy.
F: Good thickness. Great taste lingers. Small bubbles are great.
O: I really really like it. This is my first one and cannot believe I've been waiting around this long to get one.

Jet black on the pour with little head. Get a bunch of vanilla on the nose. More vanilla on the front. Gets very boozy on the backend with hints of chocolate. Overall great beer.

Overly Autolyzed -soy and 'meaty' with alcohol heat. Not a lot of compexity coming through as it's overwhelmed by bittering hops, boozy heat and some off BBQ / soy undercurrent

Had this with the coffee version and both had the same problem. feels very much like stressed yeast that detonated trying to get the high ABV (or just hard quit somewhere along the way)
I expected much better from pipeworks

Alex's bottle. cloying sweet. not so much mouthfeel. barrelling ok. soso drinkability. Aspects of the barrelling there but just a sweet bomb, certainly not worth taking in sugar at 13% abv.

Spring 17 vintage. Quality barrel aged. Standard looking, thinning edges, some foam and lacing. Big time barrel scent, roasty stout smell. Roasty stout on the forefront, barrel presence blends well. Very mild with not a lot of burn. Never had a bad Pipeworks Barrel Aged beer.

Poured a black body with minimal head and the aroma is booze (lots of it), wood, vanilla and hint of spice (standard fare). Sticky, hot, boozy, warmed me up on a snowy night in NYC and has a touch of spice on the finish. Thick/full-bodied, it's a slow sipper that brings lots of heat (in this case a good thing) with a touch of spicy sweetness underneath to keep from being a complete booze-bomb.

Revisited this on tap. 3/2018.

No head. Motor oil black. Thick. Reminds me of bcbs. Thick and fudgey. Vanilla and bourbon are heavy. Chocolate, oak, dark dried fruits. The bourbon is in your face. Warming. Smooth. Full bodied. Very enjoyable.

L: thick black/brown with a subtle brown head that dissipates quickly.
S: Wood & cream/milk
T: Milk chocolate and some bourbon that blends seamlessly with the base beer.
F: Good thick mouthfeel, a tad thinner than the very best BA stouts I've had but still excellent.
O: Pipeworks can turn an OK stout into pure greatness with whatever they do with the barrel!

L- Black with a slight reddish tinge around the edges. Slight mocha head that fades quickly. A few lingering bubbles.

S- Subtle nose. Mostly milk chocolate with some oak.

T- Decent amount of booze, but not overpowering. Oaky. Milk chocolate, a little bittersweet. Well balanced.

F- Medium carb. Fairly smooth, booziness hurts it a little. Could be a little thicker/creamier.

O- Really nice BA stout. Reminds me of BCBS. My sample at the dojo was boozy, but this was nicely balanced. I've waited in lines for lesser stouts, but this has been available for several weeks.

3/18 edit- updated for the winter 2018 batch. A bit thicker and stronger barrel presence. Really good, so I bumped it up a bit.

Had on tap. Viscous black body with no head. Smell is bourbon booze heavy with chocolate, vanilla, wood, coffee and dark fruit following in stride. Taste is very boozy but not the crisis everyone is making it out to be, granted this might be aged a bit, not sure. Has plenty of wood, vanilla, and chocolate to soften the bourbon, with slight brown sugar, coffee, dark fruit skins, molasses and bitters. Feel is boozy yet smooth, has some harshness from malt as much as booze here and there, but it fits the character of the beer

Batch 440-441

Nice underlying chocolate flavor. Still a good amount of oak in the flavor (and aroma as well). This is the best BA offering I've had from PW. Having said this, it's essentially a facsimile of Bourbon County Brand Stout in most every facet. Please note this is a compliment in that BCBS imo is the preeminent barrel aged stout. However, given that BCBS is so much easier to find than this beer I would recommend BCBS just from an availability standpoint. Cheers to PW for a quality BA stout nonetheless.

Dark mohagany with nice looking dense head, cinnamon color, excellent retention.

Lots of anise in the aroma. Deep roast, coffee.

Really sweet, black licorice, coffee, leather, oak. Great integration of the barrel.

Smooth and heavy body that really holds it all together. Spot on with the carbonation. Cuts the sweetness well.

Very well put together. Great integration of the barrel and not too boozy.

22 ounce bottle into a snifter, batch #440-441.

Pours near black, opaque, no head, no cling. Smells of bourbon, malt, vanilla, charred oak, a little chocolate, a little licorice when fully warmed. Smells terrific. Taste leads with strong bourbon- but it's not overwhelming, malt, some vanilla, some oak, some chocolate. Light alcohol. Smooth, a little creamy, great body, a tongue coater.

Well blended, great aroma and flavor. Really kicks it all up closer to room temperature. I'm an unabashed Pipeworks fan, and thought this was another outstanding effort.

black bodied beer with small head that drops quickly down to no head at all. Smells of heavy bourbon and is also boozy smelling. Milk chocolate and minimal roast. Taste is similar to the nose. Lots of bourbon character that is pretty nice. Milk chocolate and a little bit of bitterness as well. Pretty darn boozy. medium bodied beer with low carbonation. The beer comes across as kinda thin. This is definitely a sipping beer. Overall this beer is really riding the hype train chugging at full speed. This is a good stout, but if it was thicker and less boozy it would make a big difference.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Viscous and inky. No head. No collar.

Smell - Boozy. Bourbony. Good lord it's bourbony. Nutty and chocolate malts.

Taste - And it tastes like bourbon. Nutty. Fudgy malts. Kinda sweet. Boozy.

Mouthfeel - Heavy and extremely boozy. Low carbonation, almost flat.

Overall - It's so boozy.
