Notes: Imperial IPA with passion fruit, honey, and Citra hops.

The first fresh fishie is finally in cans! Same recipe, but now in a new format - we're so stoked that Spotted Puffer is back with a fresh look! This beer is brewed with tart and tropical passion fruit puree, balanced with wild flower honey, and packed with aroma from late addition Citra hops. It's a tasty and smooth beer.

Bottled summer 2015 ("batch 744-745"); drank 6/27/15 @ the Yarchives.

Opaque pale orange appearance.

HUGE fluffy white head; a frothy curtain of lace.

Guava & faint honey notes in the nose.

Medium thick mouthfeel.

Guava & honey flavors up front; grapefruit bite on the finish. No booze heat.

A tasty, nicely balanced DIPA.

Nice imperial IPA from brewery that’s new to me. Tasty and refreshing, easy to drink and crisp - just a little disappointing considering the other amazing reviews here. Looks good, honeyed yellow-orange color with a little white head and very scant lingering lacing. Smells of ripe mango, passionfruit, pineapple, grapefruit, lemon and tangerine. Also some weaker malt, vanilla, bread and herbal hops. Tastes similarly, good clean slightly juicy feel but again I was a little let down by the lack of intensity, complexity and depth. The higher ABV was very well hidden. Didn’t really detect much honey. Slightly sticky, mild, smooth mouthfeel and good carbonation. An enjoyable beer, just not one of my top imperial IPAs.

16oz can, date stamped 07/19/2019. Deep copper-amber colored DIPA with a foamy beige head that leaves some sticky lacing on the glass. Bold tropical passion fruit aroma with caramel, honey, pine, and mango. Insanely juicy and tropical with bold & tart passion fruit leading the dominance on the palate; guava, mango, melon, sweet honey, and caramel, meld in well. Full body, ample carbonation, more sweet than bitter on the finish, alcohol burns the throat a bit, which aids in taking the sweetness away. Overall, this didn't meet expectations. It has some great flavors but seems to be too sweet at times and too harsh at times - I think it's the passion fruit. It was still good, but a bit of a disappointment given the price and it's high BA score.

Appearance - The beer wasgden orange in color with a white head.

Smell - The nose was light was citrus notes and hops.

Taste - The initial impression includedmango, honey, and a spicy bitterness toward the back. The spice and citris overtones continue in the finish.

Mouthfeel - The beer had an exceptionally full mouthfeel that the carbonation struggled to penetrate.

Overall - It is not Pipeworks’ best IPA, but very solid.

Very passion fruit and lime like juice forward. Definitely a tart component in the middle followed by some hop bitterness. Very fresh and juicy/bitter with restrained malt profile. Alcohol hidden completely. The passion fruit puree is a bit overbearing for me but I could see this brew being balanced differently batch to batch.

Appearance: Pours hazy with an amber hue and a one inch cap; shards of lacing hang around

Smell: Pineapple, orange and passion fruit with a hint of honey

Taste: Orange forward, with overripe pineapple building; the passion fruit adds a jammy bitterness; there are some mead-like honey tones that emerge, after the swallow

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I found this bottle in the back of the fridge and it could well be a couple of years old; still drinkable but I will need to try a fresher version to rate this more accurately

Pours hazy, dark gold in color with 1/2 inch head. Taste is big Citra hops, melon, orange juice, lime, and passion fruit. Juicy, slightly bitter, medium-heavy bodied, with moderate carbonation. Super tasty. Just a delicious beverage. Glad Pipeworks is in Massachusetts now.

Poured from a bomber into a snifter. Bottle date not evident, but from the February 2017 batch.

A: Pours a super hazy, opaque, rusty orange in color with a 1/2 inch, foamy, cream colored head with minimal retention. Thick, white lacing throughout.

S: Big aromas of tropical fruit and citrus including pineapple, passionfruit, mango, guava, orange, and grapefruit. Notes of piney, floral, and earthy hops with hints of honey as well.

T: Juicy and fairly sweet. Starts off with bitter grapefruit and orange rind followed by huge punches of sweet passionfruit purée and honey. Milder notes of pineapple and guava. Finishes with a lingering, palate smacking, piney, resinous hop bitterness. Somewhat tart, though this lessens as my palate became accustomed.

F: Medium bodied. Super crisp with a moderate amount of carbonation. Slightly dry.

O: Overall, this is a good DIPA. My first time trying this one. I was very excited and was somewhat satisfied, but not to the extent I was hoping. I heard complaints about this batch being a little more fruit forward and tart and will echo those, even though I haven't had other batches I agree in general. Definitely improves once your palate gets accustomed to the tartness. Reminds me of a juicy Hopslam. Good DIPA, but for me it doesn't live up to its high rating. Hoping it was just the batch I had. Will definitely give it another try in the future and hopefully will be able to try it fresher.

L- Hazy orange with a foamy white head.

S- Heavy on the tropical fruits. Pineapple, mango, orange.

T- Too much bitterness from the fruit for my taste. Like eating the rind. Other than that, it's got some sweet malt and dank hops.

F- Thick, dry feel. Medium carb.

O- I would rather just smell it. The thing I usually like about the fish beers is that they are balanced and don't have the overpowering fruit flavor. This one is just too much.

this beer is famous, feel like i have been reading about it for years, and finally its here in denver, on tap at the pint room down south, worth the wait! really cloudy on the pour, but with a pure white head over an inch high and real airy and delicate looking, a nice contrast to the thick dense orange beer below it. aroma is the best part here, tropical fruit juice, fresh, passion fruit, ruby red grapefruit, and fresh orange, and fresh flowers, really beautiful, the hops are definitely citra, and there is a ton of them. the flavor is great too, im not sure i taste a ton of the honey, and might not have picked up on it if i didnt know it was in here. the passionfruit is great, juicy and fresh, not as tangy and tart as it sometimes gets, and fully complimentary to the hops, also well dosed. i could swear there is grapefruit juice in here too, but it must just be the fusion of the hops and the other fruit, its like pulpy and acidic a little bit, bitter in the right places, seems like grapefruit. the grain body is a little fuller, but i dont taste a ton of malt here, must get a lot of its fermentable sugar from the fruit and honey, but its fermented down pretty dry, more hop than sugar residuals here. citra for days, fresh and juicy and loving the passion fruit. the beer is bitter, but seems less hoppy bitter to me, more of the grapefruit thing. nice body on it, really is vacation feeling beer to me, tropical and beachy, and on the edge of not really tasting much like ipa at all. no booze showing at all, for how strong it is thats impressive. really juicy and flavorful beer, super fresh, mango and maybe the honey coming around in the finish. awesome stuff, really different and well done. not usually a fan of flavored ipa, but this is next level!

A 22 oz. bottle (no date) poured into a TH tulip glass.

Appearance- A murky darker orange with about 1 1/2 finger of foamy white head. Lacing down the glass with a nice head hanging around for most of it.

Smell- All tropical citrus notes. No pine or anything else coming through the fruit explosion. Reminds me of a Tree House fruit bomb.

Taste- The fruits dominate the taste but there is definitely a sweetness in there too. Maybe honey or could be the mixing. There was actually a little more malt in it than I expected.

Mouthfeel- Medium carbonation and rather thick for an IPA. Stay juicy throughout.

Overall- A great fruit explosion. My first beer from Pipeworks and I must say I was very impressed. On par with most NE style DIPAs and no alcohol in the taste. This one really hit me before I realized what a bite it had. Recommend getting one if you have the opportunity.

Hazy yellow at the bottom of the glass, with the rest of the body showing burnt amber, topped with a moderate off-white fluff.

Smell is really dank, with onion and mint, lemon drops and vanilla.

Taste is pine, pineapple, and cannabis, maybe a little too much, as it's almost coming off as rubbery. This is saved by some tropical notes of mango and passionfruit.

Feel is fluffy and dry.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber into a pint glass.

pours a super hazy body, orange-amber, with a white head that has spotty yellow spots in it. Nice lacing, frothy retention. Really unique and nice looking.

Aromas are SUPER citrusy. Straight passionfruit juice, if I knew what that tasted like. I'd imagine it tastes like this. Tropical paradise of hops. Pineapple citrus mango.

On the tongue.. interesting.. it's a fruit bomb, juicy IPA at first with citrus and grapefruit notes, and finishes with tart grapefruit and passionfruit notes. The passionfruit puree shines on the finish with the tartness. Mouthfeel is medium body and carbonation. NO alcohol presence for 9.5%.

Unique.. a tart citrus IPA. I really enjoyed this.

Pours cloudy orange amber color with a 1 finger creamy looking off white head that was full of tiny bubbles, dissipating slowly and leaving great foamy rings as it went down. Looks like a glass of guava juice.

Smells passion fruit, mango, pineapple, grapefruit, orange peel and all things citrus. No signs of malt and not balanced at all, it's basically all citrus fruit. It smells good but almost as much like juice as it does smell like a beer.

If you like grapefruit juice then this is the beer for you: bitter, full of citrus, tart and biting with a lot of red grapefruit and lemon zest. Not my thing, too bitter and unbalanced for my liking. It hid the alcohol masterfully, but that was not enough to sway my liking of this beer overall.

Bottle enjoyed 3/10/17.

Look: Dark orange, almost brown, semi hazy. Nice soapy, foam head that lingers. (7/10)
Smell: Mold, malt, sugar, tropical fruit, orange, pond, citrus. Very faint smell, not too powerful. (8/10)
Taste: citrus, passionfruit, tangerine, clementine, orange, bread, very sugary. (7/10)
Feel: Acidic, watery, citrus bite, with a nice aftertaste that leaves lemon on the palate. (8/10)
Overall: This is a decent offering, but not their best. It was too bland in hops, and too much sugar in the mouthfeel. Its a must try, but would only drink this once. (7/10)

Disappointing. Outstanding nose, kind of blah on the flavor with only a vague recognition of how the bottle is actually presented, and the mouthfeel is weaker than expected. It's an okay beer, but, in my opinion, overrated.

Smell right out of the bottle was amazing, just tons of tropical fruit wafting into my nostrils. The taste was not as swift; too much fruit rind, not enough honey malt backbone. As it warmed, I lost that great smell and the taste was just blah acidity.

The passionfruit taste was just too much in this case. Great mouthfeel, looks like a hazy IPA, but it was bitter in a tart kind of way. The fruit seemed to overpower any hop presence. It's a good beer, but I'm disappointed because I was really excited to try it and unfortunately I bought 2!

Hazy, juice bomb looking pour
Smells of mango, sweet malt, peach, passion fruit, papaya
Fairly explosive fruit flavor, though it seems almost a bit tangy
A tad shy of the pillowy mouthfeel but crisp and light reflective of the style

This beer looks great, smells great and feels great but the taste is not great. The citrus element of this beer is the downfall. I don't know intimately the taste of passion fruit but i do know after years of drinking Tropicana Orange Juice that that is the taste in the back end. The one that sits the longest. The honey doesn't balance out that taste enough. I really wish the honey was more present. The front is splendid but it's the back that tastes like Macro Orange Juice. If that wasn't so prominent I would give this beer a much higher score. If this is exactly what Pipeworks is going for then hats off to them but I feel their Crimson Snapper, Sure Bet and Killer Queen are more successful with fruit additions. It's still unique and good though and I would still recommend.

One of my favorite Pipeworks, this has a fantastic balance between the fruit and the hops; and it doesn't let the honey overpower and make the brew too sweet. Nicely done!
