16oz draft poured at Local Option into a shaker pint. Enjoyed on 8.21.16, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours a pale golden color, lightly hazy with a foamy white head, about a finger and a half high with good retention and lace. The aroma is nice, light mango fruit, very citrusy with tropical fruit forward hops and some biscuity pale grain lingers. Pretty simple session IPA, refreshing and inviting. The flavors echo the nose, lightly fruity hops, tropical with some mango puree, citrus peel and pale grain, soft and bready. The mouthfeel is nice, lighter body, gentle but lively, active carbonation and a dry finish.

Verdict: A nice Session IPA from Pipeworks, not really a ton of mango going on, but it's bright, tropical and refreshing. I might take a few other Session IPAs over this one, especially at the price point, but this was a solid offering.

16oz, Canned on 4/18/17
A - hazy orange colored body with a thin off-white head that quickly fades to a foam
S - juicy, mango and tropical hop aroma mixed with caramel
T - huge mango and tropical hop flavors with notes of Mandarin orange zest, passion fruit, caramel, and honey
M - lighter body, but comes across quite refreshing and easy to drink; finishes modestly bitter with plenty of residual juicy sweetness
O - good easy drinking and refreshing beer here. Nice utilization of the mango infusion.

16oz can flown home in a suitcase by my wife. Canned on 4/4/17.

Pours slightly hazy, surprisingly orange, medium head, lots of carbonation. Smell is definitely tropical fruit, a little grassy freshness.

Taste is a little hollow -- a characteristic in some "session IPAs" that I don't know how to describe. Other than that, some tropical fruit, some pine bitterness.

Mouthfeel is thin, light. Overall, it's not bad.

16 fl oz draft pour at Olympic tavern in rockford, IL.

Appearance: Golden straw body with bone white head.

Smell: Mangos and citrusy hop profile.

Taste: Mango, oranges, and bready malts. Light bitterness and lots of tropical fruits and sweet citrus character. Very nice!

Mouthfeel: light body with moderate carbonation. Light dry finish. Very drinkable.

Overall: Mango Guppy is pretty tasty session IPA from Pipeworks. Glad to get to try this brew!

Pours a fairly clear light amber, with high and dense foam.

Smell obviously has lots of mango, a bit of pineapple and some pine. Alsa a whiff of black tea, which was nice.

Taste is tropical and full of mango. A hint of pineapple, slightly tart, before finishing with a nice bitterness and that whiff of tea again.

Mouthfeel is thin and prickly. Not a lot of body at all.

Overall, a very tasty session IPA, tropical and refreshing. But the little tea notes were really nice, and gave it a pretty unique touch.

Nabbed a can for $2.50 USD at a Trader Joe's in Chicago, IL.

CAN: 500ml/16 fl oz format. Standard pull-tab. Loud colourful label art. Canned 07/17/17.

"Session IPA brewed with Mango and Honey." 4.6% ABV. "Flavored Ale."

Served cold into a tulip.

HEAD: ~2cm in height. White colour. Frothy consistency. Could be more robust, but it's well-executed overall. Retention is decent - ~2-3 minutes - but the ABV is pretty low. Leaves no lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.

BODY: Orange colour of average vibrance. No yeast/lees are visible. Seems filtered, yet it's nontransparent.

Appears well-carbonated. Far from unique or special in appearance for a pale ale (i.e. a so-called "session IPA") but it's a nice change of pace from the usual clear copper.

AROMA: Mango is present but isn't particularly fresh or vivid. Honey...sure, I guess, but I'd never identify it in a blind tasting. It's there when you know to look for it. Pale malts, floral hops, fruity hops.

In spite of the mango and honey additives/adjunct, it doesn't seem too sweet based on the aroma. But hop pungency is limited even for a pale ale.

Aromatic intensity is low; this is muted. No overt yeasty notes, off-notes, or boozy are/is detectable (aside from maybe some fruity esters from the ale yeast).

TASTE & TEXTURE: Somewhat coating. Muted, with a poor depth of flavour; this lacks vividness and expressiveness as well as adequate hop pungency. Very shallow simplistic fare, though the honey and pale malt sweetness does keep any hop bitterness in check.

Hopwise, it's pretty limited. Floral hop character, fruity hop character...it all blends into the mango fruit, which isn't even that prominent.

Lacks any truly distinct flavours...the beer just blurs together. Not imbalanced, but not dialed in or harmonious in its construction. It's an underwhelming build for a pale ale.

Smooth, wet, overcarbonated, unrefreshing, medium to full-bodied. Has too much thickness and heft on the palate given its relative lack of flavour. Not oily or juicy, but it's also not boozy or astringent or otherwise problematic. This mouthfeel fails to accentuate specific flavours or to elevate the beer as a whole.

OVERALL: A shrug of a pale ale (marketed, of course, as a session IPA) from Pipeworks, Mango Guppy isn't worth its $2.50+ pricetag and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Even the gimmickry of the mango/honey additives isn't enough to set it apart from other beers; indeed, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is more interesting (and even more hop-emphatic) than this - and that can be had for less than $10 per sixer in all of Pipeworks' markets. Drinkable but underwhelming. Very forgettable fare.

Awesome session IPA. Great for summer boozing. Light for downing a couple but still has a delicious flavor. Definitely still got the mango flavor. Well done.

7/31/17

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden pour. Tall frothy light tan head. Decent retention and spotty bits of lacing.

S: Definitely got some mango in there. Very light citrus and tropical fruit in general. Sweet; can really smell that honey.

T: Yup, more of the same. Tropical fruits like mango and pineapple. Citrusy grapefruit. Maybe some passion fruit? Touch of honey but I'm honestly not sure if my brain is telling me there's honey because I know there's supposed to be honey? Very very very VERY light cracker malt. Crisp finish with hints of mango and tropical fruits.

M: Somewhat thin and watery feel. Crisp finish.

O: Not bad. Suffers the same fate of most session IPAs. Sounds like a great idea but then you just end up with a somewhat "meh" beer. It's good but it's nothing special.
