Thanks to HIGHPA for this 16 oz. can that arrived a couple of days ago as an extra. Pipeworks is always welcome in this house.

The pour is redder Vladek Sheybal. Smells like caramel & rusted VW Beetle. Eh.

Blood of the Unicorn is my least favorite kind of redhead. Something about less than excellent reds always reminds me of red rust, with that metallic taste leeching into the folds of my mouth & fouling the entire experience, & I get just enough of a whiff here that it yucks up the beer for me. Aside from the fender rust (which does fade some as the beer warms) there is caramel, moderate bitterness, & the hops show as earthy & slightly piney. Far thicker than a lowish ABV red ale ought to be, which isn’t helping.

Really mediocre, which is not what I expect from such a fine brewery.

16 oz. can dated 9/18/17

Pours foggy hazy amber red with a dense creamy light khaki colored foam head. Smells like gigantic grapes, berries, fresh grapefruit, orange citrus, lemon, blood orange, apricot, peach, mango, pineapple, toasty sweet caramely toffee roasty biscuity malts, with floral dank resinous earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like roasty toasty sweet caramely toffee biscuity malts, grapes, berries, fresh grapefruit, orange citrus, lemon, blood orange, apricot, peach, mango, pineapple, with floral dank resinous earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy and slick with moderate low carbonation. Overall a really great hoppy red ale.

Pipeworks slips into MA every now and again so I was happy to pick up a couple tall boys. Pours a (wait for it) amber, reddish-golden hue out of the can. Nice puffy head that lingers. Aroma and taste are toasted grains, slightly sweet malt, pine and light citrus. Good malty backbone. Lighter on citrus and heavier on pine. Crisp, clean and well carbonated. Solid beer.

For context - Blazing World is my gold standard for the hoppy amber style. Although this provides a good hop bite, it’s not at that level.

On tap at Jockey Hollow in Morristown. Pours a ruby red mahogany hue with moderate frothing. Mellow aroma replete with hints of biscuits and caramel. Similar overall flavor profile.

7/24/17 canning date

A: Pours a nice blood red with a tall fizzy light brown head. Decent head retention, so-so lacing.

S: Citrus and herbal hops. Caramel sweetness.

T: More of the same. Nice sharp grapefruit up front. A touch of herbal hops and then mostly a spicy, resinous pine. Caramel malt, with a sugary candy type sweetness. Candied grapefruit in the aftertaste (is that even a thing?)

M: Medium bodied, sharp and bitter.

O: Nice hoppy red. Nothing stands out as being amazing but it's got a nice bitter hop profile and the sweetness backing it up like you'd expect in any good red ale.

Canned ~5 weeks ago.

L -- Pours a mildly hazy medium amber body with a two-finger off-white head produced with aerated pour. Some retention and good lacing
S -- Combination of a mild tropical fruitiness, pine, and a caramel maltiness. Hint of dishwater in the background
T -- Largely follows the nose. The malts (saltine cracker-like) obscure some of the hop nuance that I enjoyed in Ninja vs Unicorn. Still quite drinkable
F -- Medium mouthfeel, medium- carb. Semi-dry, with a lasting, astringent finish. The heavy malting makes for a fairly wholesome drink
O -- While not too shabby in its own right, the awesomeness of Ninja v Unicorn (and Lizard King) overshadow this brew
