My first offering from Pipeworks. I had this on draught at Stirling Tavern in Morristown. 13 oz. pour served in a goblet. It pours a lovely, deep ruby color with a foamy, ecru-colored head and lacing. It smells of grapefruit, pine needles, floral hops, bready malt, and a whiff of cherry. There's not a lot of sweetness in the taste: lots of tart citrus, pine, and biting hops, with just a hint of sweet fruit notes at the finish. It has a nice, crisp mouth feel with lively carbonation, and the 6.5% ABV seems light compared to other red ales. Overall, its a pleasant drinking ale. It's not quite at the level of Nugget Nectar or Flipside but still quite good. I'd like to try this from a can to see how it compares.

Unicorn Blood must give me great strength.

A- Tallboy cascades into a becher with a deep amber almost ruby red body and a thick puffy off-white head. The head stops rising at about an inch high and has pretty good retention.

S- Makes good use of the piney and citrus hop varietals with those cones bursting out of the glass. The hop profile is mostly pine, grapefruit, pineapple and dank with some tropical mango, floral and tangerine further in the backdrop. The amber aspect of the beer is somewhat quiet here but hints of toast, sweet grain and bread are noticed.

T- The grains strengthen in comparison from the nose but are still at mercy to the powerful hop bill. The two forces play well together with toasty, bready, biscuit, cracker and raw barley notes (a key lack of sweet caramel) following up the hop barrage of pine resin, grapefruit, oranges, floral, herbal, mango and dank tropical notes. Contains all of that without being particularly juicy or nectar-like, well-balanced.

MF- Medium bodied overall with a smooth consistency that has a texture between foamy and creamy. Medium-high level of carbonation and a clean piney bitterness in the finish.

Not the most in your face brew but brewing prowess is displayed in the use of flavorful malts that do not interfere with the hops but actually accentuate them. Toast, biscuit and bready grains avoid being sweet and are in harmony with pine, dank and citrus hops.

Really nice amber ale though it looks more like a brown ale. Hoppy Amber is one of my favorite styles and this is a good one. Reminds me of Stone Pataskala but not quite as hoppy or unique. Pine, sweet resin, toasty caramel malt, a pinch of spiciness. Everything you'd expect in great balance. yb

Beautiful beer with a foamy white head and ruby body. Very easy drinker for a strong ale.

Canned 2/6/17: Pours blood red color with active carbonation leading up to a solid 2 finger foamy khaki colored head that was packed with tiny bubbles, not moving for about a minute and then dissipating very, very slowly while leaving really good foamy lacing coating the sides and a foamy layer on top. Love it when an amber/red ale looks like a great DIPA.

Smells of grapefruit and fresh piney hops up front, followed by lemon zest, caramel, toffee, Ritz Crackers, toasted wheat bread, candy like Razzles and then more citrus notes. Smells more IPA than amber ale, but either way it's a fine nose.

Taste brings more malty sweetness and bready notes to counter the strong citrus from the nose. The hop flavor is dank and almost seems wet hopped with tobacco qualities, bringing out light spices like tea leaf, pepper and coriander. The piney notes are sharp and bitter, allowing the floral and earthy notes to almost balance the sweetness from the malts as the caramel and grains hold on to the lead position on center stage.

This is one of those beers I bought on a whim because I got a kick out of the can art and because Pipeworks makes some good stuff. I hoped it would be half as good as Lizard King APA, and it exceeded my expectations. This is complex, smooth and easy to drink. Any fan of Tröegs Nugget Nectar should give this a try...it's not as hoppy, but tasty along those same lines.
