Brewed by:
Pipeworks Brewing Company
Illinois, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Also known as Unicorn Galaxy

Our friends south of the equator really have this hop growing thing figured out and we are ecstatic they do. Without them we couldn't bring you Unicorn Galaxy. We built a platform of malted barley and wheat then atop that we constructed our ode to Galaxy hops. The hop character really shines through with aromas and flavors of tropical fruit, tangerine, citrus, passion fruit and fresh cut grass. Drink early, drink often.

This beer pours golden and cloudy with a good head and lacing. The head dissipates quickly. The smell of the beer is hoppy and orange. The taste is light orange and full hoppy. The feel is smooth and strong, and it lingers. Great beer!

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a speiglau IPA glass.

Look is a slightly hazy yellow with an inch and a half head.

Intense galaxy hop aroma. Bitter is so intense it's almost cheesy (like in actual cheese). The actual aroma is intense tropical fruit. Lots of skin aromas from the bitterness.

Taste carries over that bitter tropical. So good. You don't taste the alcohol at all.

One word: delicious.

Poured a mostly clear golden color with minimal white head. The smell is a lot of tropical fruit with a slight spiciness. The flavor follows the nose with a fruity sweetness and mild spiciness ending with a good bitter bite. The feel is medium with good carbonation. Pipeworks hits it out of the park with another IIPA. Galaxy hops are one of my favorites and they are showcased very well in this beer.

This is one of the best ipas that I've had in a long while. Very original brew. It looks like an unfiltered iipa, no sediment.

This is no typical new england style ipa nor is it some typical west coast style ipa. The galaxy is on full display and I'm a sucker for galaxy hops. I've also never had a beer balanced around galaxy hops that tasted anything like it. Its clearly not a single hop brew and thats not a bad thing. What they did complements the brew very well. Its also very sweet which I love about green and found lacking with very green. I do love very green for a different reason but would take green over the two for a regular beer. I only bring that up since green is probably my favorite brew. The balance of this matches it imo. Pipeworks yeast is apparently also very neutral which I enjoy. I would never guess that this was 9.5% abv. Thats normally past what I would consider ideal for a iipa. The heat is present but balanced out very well, the sweetness more than makes up for it. Its also bitter enough to scratch the itch. Just a very well rounded brew. Its juicy, malty, a little resinous. It hits every note that I would look for in a iipa and not in a way that I've had from any other brew that I've tried. This is at least worth trying. And if you don't like it, don't rate ipas. I don't want your opinion.

Look: Brownish, almond, orange with a nice foamy head that lingers. (7/10)
Smell: Yeast, ear wax, vaseline, plastic, faint hint of tropical fruit. (6/10)
Taste: Much better than the smell. More bitter than sweet, but interesting. Ocean water and malt. Cut grass and earth. Pepper, Oregano, Lemon peel. Peach as it gets warm. (8/10)
Feel: Harsh bite, but not too bad. (7/10)
Overall: Not a bad brew, but doesn't touch NE IPAs. This is a manly beer, definitely more bitter than sweet/fruity. I'm not getting a big hop hit, but it's very drinkable as it opens up. Must try. (8/10)

L - dark shady of orange, moderate haze, lots of lacing

S - pungent, typical southern hemisphere hops, grassy, muscadine, funky tropical, a little honeyed biscuit

T - follows the nose, slight sweetness (less than NE average), less malt than Crimson Snapper (more like NvU in this regard), strong grassy/piney bitterness on the end

F - syrupy, medium plus carbonation, ABV and bitterness merge into a somewhat bracing finish

O - huge beer, good showcase of galaxy hops

Galaxy is quietly a great hop that I don't encounter often in the beers I drink - least not that I'm aware of - and I always dig it when I have it. Featured here with Columbus and Cascade hops in a 9.5% DIPA from Pipeworks. Fair golden body , mostly clear, with a white head a few fingers high that leaves some lace sheeting down the glass. Aromas of clean, crisp citrus and white wine-like impressions are followed by much of the same on the sip. Has a fruity and grassy character, with a taut bitterness and a clean finish offering a bit of drying on the close. Medium-bodied, moderately carbonated and only mildly sweet. Doesn't present heavy or filling, abv discreet, supremely drinkable... A great entry into the style.

Poured into a Pipeworks NvU snifter. Maybe I'm spoiled after a PseudoSue DDH and a Hopslam over the last two days, because while this is an excellent beer, it feels like it's missing something. Cloudy gold with constant lacing. Pungent and mildly bitter hop scent. Bittersweet hop taste with slight tang in the background. Very smooth and easy drinking for an imperial IPA.

Dear Pipeworks,

This is an excellent beer. Dank and juicy, just the right amount of bitterness. Great balance on the carbonation. Thank you for brining it back and keep knocking them out of the park.

Pours a light golden color. Clear and crisp with an stream of carbonation bubbles coursing upwards. Frothy soapy white head dissipates steadily leaving a thin layer of foam thicker on the ring around the outside of the beer.

Smell is a nice tropical aroma - whigs of mango, peach, papaya, tangerine, and tons of pineapple come through. Very fruity with almost no hoppy bitterness coming through on the nose.

Tate follows the nose with some mango, peach, papaya, pineapple and tangerine up front. Gives way to a dried grass bitterness. Finish is slightly bitter. Not much sweetness for a DIPA. Remarkably balanced flavor profile while yet letting the galaxy hops shine.

Feel is very light and incredibly drinkable - you would never guess this was a 9.5% DIPA until after you've finished the bomber in one sitting. Medium carbonation. Super smooth.

Overall a lovely DIPA form pipeworks - definitely top 3 from them. A must try if you get the chance.

L- Opaque straw color. White head that lingers, decent lacing.

S- Tropical, hoppy aroma. Mango, pineapple, a little grapefruit.

T- Slightly less balanced than some of their fish beers, but not in a bad way. Not as much malty sweetness as some of their fish beers. It let's the hops come through well. Just enough sweetness.

F- A little lighter than I'm used to, but still a decent body. Smooth.

O- Shocker, Pipeworks made a really tasty IPA. I like that it's slightly different than some of their other options.

Another outstanding IIPA from Pipeworks. Smell is an abundance of galaxy hops! Also tropical fruit and passion fruit are the predominant ones. Taste is glorious, smooth as silk up front, with a slight bite at the end. Please don't wait 2.5 years to brew this again!

Straw yellow and golden in color, mostly clear. One finger of white head with good retention. Aroma is pineapple, tropical fruit, grass. Herbal and dank notes as well. The taste hits the notes but more powerfully. Tropical fruit, guava, pineapple, grass. A sweet malt body balances it well. The mouthfeel is damn near perfect - medium-full body, moderate carbonation, creamy and silky with a bitter, slightly dry finish. A definite winner from PDubs.

I have tried Ninja vs Unicorn, Unicorn Hits Rock Bottom, and now this Galaxy Unicorn. Galaxy if my favorite of the three. Light in color but no short of tropical citrusy hops. So yummy.

A: Glowing golden color with a fluffy two finger white head. Tons of lace and awesome retention.

S: Super juicy smell. Candied pink grapefruit, mango, pineapple and some guava.

T: Honey malt, tons of tropical fruit and a lingering grapefruit bitterness on the finish. Caramel, light piney hops and some pineapple. Slick moughfeel with some prickly carbonation that really complements the bitterness on the finish well.

With the "Galaxy" hop on full display, the trick is to provide a base flavor that supports the full range of the hop's flavor but without competing for attention. The smooth, creamy and semi-rich character of imperial pale ale underneath gives the cones the kiss that they deserve.

Its translucent golden globe casts peach and orange amidst the edges as the nose gains steam, projecting mouthwatering aromas of tropical and citrus with all their juicy vibrancy. Early flavors of sun-kissed ripeness invites the underpinnings of light caramel, shortbread, honey and tangy fructose to give the hops a sweet, tart, bready-sweet but all all-natural taste.

The middle palate is bursting with tangy sweetness and vibrant fruit brilliance as red grapefruit, tangerine pineapple, mango, apricot, passionfruit, lemon and kiwi pop off the tongue with nearly teeth-grinding tang and lightly bracing acidity. With the sweetness receding, the fruity hop flavors stand out even more with the finish coming on fast.

And with the sweetness waning, the smooth hop bitterness sets in and saturates the tongue with drying fruit, herbal grasses and a mildly resinous pine note. The mild warmth of alcohol penetrates its medium bodied texture and assists the hops and fleeting malt in a dry finish, equipped with a clean and crisp, bready after palate.

Thanks to drewone for sharing this one at his tasting.

Batch # 442/443.

Pours a hazy honey gold with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and tropical fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and tropical fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with really nice fruit forward hop characteristics all around.

Serving type: bottle.

Bomber in trade
Slightly hazy, light peach color, thick foamy head
Aroma leads heavily toward citrus
Taste is upfront sweetness, more mild citrus flavors, some dried herbs, a lot of malty notes, and a moderate to strong bitter finish.
Overall, an enjoyable beer that I wouldn't go out of my way to drink again.

Hazed golden orange, 1.5 fingers of white head, some lace. Lots of tropical fruit on the nose, grapefruit, orange and pineapple, juicy fruit, well hopped, dank with a honey-malty presence throughout as well. Taste is a mix of sticky hop, fruity citrus, pineapple, orange with a bit of a sweet malt closer, quite bitter throughout. Oily medium body, lightly carbonated. Truly great stuff, i'm surprised you don't see tons of ISO's for this, a fantastic DIPA.

Light hazy orange color. Not a lot in the nose to be honest: vaguely fruity - Am I coming down with a cold? Taste is tropical fruit. I get mango and pineapple with bit of a hop bite in the finish. As the beer warms, there's a slight sweetness that adds to the complexity. Mouthfeel is somewhat creamy with good carbonation.

Wow! Pipeworks has been getting ridiculous with the amount of beers they've been producing over the past 6 months. Honestly, even as a Chicagoan, I can't keep up with all the new pipeworks out however this is the gem of all the new brews released. I LOVE NINJA VS. UNICORN, however this barely beat it. Very wheaty, which I don't usually like, and hoppy but not too bitter because it had some ridiculous tangerine/pineapple taste in it as well. Pipeworks is on the rise people!

Galaxy Unicorn - Pipeworks Brewing

Double IPA
9.5% ABV

APPEARANCE: Pours a murky, hazy orange with golden peach hues. Unfiltered but not finding any sediment in the initial pour. Big sudsy off white head that stuck around for the long haul. Leaving nice lacing all around the glass as it slowly dissipated.

AROMA: Big burst of over ripe oranges, grapefruit rind. Followed by a tropical cereal like aroma. Almost like that Special K with the dried fruit in it. Tons of hoppy, floral notes with a slight spicy earthiness. Backend grassy, slightly catty. Very interesting and inventing bouquet on this beer.

TASTE: Wow I new the nose had fruit on it but the taste it's a tropical fruit bomb! Fresh, juicy, ripe tangerines, pineapples even a bit of berry flavor. Toasted warm bread with honey butter on it. For sure getting some heat from the ABV but I actually enjoy that especially when it's balanced out with the big bitterness from all those hops.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium creamy body with a nice medium carbonation. Nice lingering oily finish. Super drinkable for a 9.5%.

OVERALL: This was my first pipeworks beer I thought it was outstanding I really enjoyed the galaxy hops flavor profile. The addition of wheat was very interesting as well. I found that all the sweet fruits where balanced nicely and not over powering at all.

RATING: 4.5/5 Zombie Heads!

Got in a trade with TheFugitive. 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/26/2014. Pours slightly hazy bright orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of smooth pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel/rind, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Outstanding complexity and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate malt sweetness; with a nice crisp malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth and fairly creamy/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome single hopped DIPA. All around great complexity and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
