Unicorn's RevengeUnicorn's Revenge
Notes: This epic battle is exhausting The Unicorn. He's been at it fighting all sorts of creatures, spirits, beings from other worlds and other dimensions. If there's one thing The Unicorn hates, it's sadness. If there's another one thing The Unicorn hates, it's exhaustion. It is time The Unicorn made all others regret the day, they began this epic battle! With an intense and unexpected juicy and floral combination that can only come with generous amounts of New Zealand hops.

Batch 174 poured into Founders snifter. This is the fourth bomber I've had of Unicorn's Revenge (the first 3 were from previous batches).

Appearance - 1 cm head which dissipates rather quickly. Light golden orange similar to the other Pipeworks Imperial IPAs. Nice lacing on the glass. Mostly clear.

Smell - Citrusy spicy hops shine through the nose. The New Zealand hops are dominating this. Definitely getting the Amarillo and Nelson Sauvin in the nose. Some buttery creamy sweet smell. Possibly a dash of honey malt? I'm not sure how to describe the smell that I call "buttery" (definitely not the buttery smell associated with infection) but it is present in all Pipeworks DIPAs.

Taste - Very hopy, grassy, lemongrass, light sweetness, a lot of hop flavor withouth the hop bitterness. This beer doesn't use the bittering hops at the start of the boil. Hops are the showcase and there is a slight malt backbone but not much malt flavor comes through unless it is providing that sweetness. As the beer warms a mango flavor comes through.

Mouthfeel - Light-medium body. Light carbonation that helps hide some alcohol. The alcohol is there but it blends with the spicy hops so that you aren't put off by it.

Overall - At 10% this is an easy drinker just like the rest of the Pipeworks DIPAs. I need to do a side by side with this and Ninja vs Unicorn. This probably isn't in the top 3 out of the Ninja and Unicorn series but it is one I will purchase every time I see it on the shelf. I wish every sip was like the first sip, total hop assault.

A- copper hued orange. small head but sticky, mostly small bubbles.

s- lemon grass, butter, tropical, mango, pineapple, very small hint of peach. some malt coming though, smells a lot like SN estate wet hop ale.

T- Grapefruit rind, really sweet peachy taste, coming from the malt. Very midwestish style. bitterness hits quick and hard them mellows fast, and lingers for sometime.

M- medium to medium heavy, plenty of carbonation, really easy to drink.

Must have for ipa fans, and more so if you live near pipeworks, pick up any of their ipa's and you will not be disappointed.

No sign of a bottling date, shame on you Pipeworks.

A: Pours a mostly-clear light orange. Very tall and frothy tan head. Head fades slowly, leaving fairly heavy chunks of lacing behind.

S: Citrusy with a side of tropical fruit. Light bready notes. It's been months since I've had a beer so I'm sure I'm rusty.

T: Hops are bristly and sharp but the flavor is surprisingly less bold. Again, citrus and tropical fruit. Beer may be old, who knows but it doesn't have that distinct stale hop flavor yet. I'd say 2-4 months old. Fairly sweet, this is 10% after all. Lots of breadiness and then some citrus and flowers on the back end.

M: Medium-heavy and slightly harsh from the hops.

O: Nice DIPA but I suspect a bit old, which definitely detracts from a beer like this. Quite good regardless.

Big disappointment- I want revenge now!

It smells wonderful. Hoppy, with great tropical/citrus and floral aromas.

But the taste that stands out the most is a metal bitterness...and it lingers - not good! Especially when compared to the other Unicorns & Ninjas of this type.

I'm sure it's better when it's fresher, but I can't imagine one month would degrade this IIPA to any huge extent.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a Speiglau IPA glass.

Look is a amber copper color with a full white head that dissipates quickly.

Aroma is sweet malt, butter scotch, and bubble gum.

Bubble gum hops on the taste along with astringent alcohol. Gives way to a sticky malty sweetness.

Not my favorite high ABV pipeworks, but it is good.
