Pours very dark brown, nearly black with a thin, caramel colored head. Aroma is smoky and peppery with a tinge of chocolate. Taste is very smoky, mildly peppery that seems to increase and decrease in strength. As the beer warms, it mellows and becomes smoother.

Probably a desert beer, but with a twist. From a brown bottle that once held 22 ounces came a pour of about 14 into a clear Imperial pint glass. A well carbonated offering, however there's no head nor lacing. Yet, it is the almost black color of brewed coffee. Although relatively bright, it's also quite opaque. The aroma is distinctly roasted malt and Chipotle. It's not particularly rich or smooth on the tongue, which is disappointing. It is mildly spicy with a strong influence of smokiness, thanks to the Chipotle. Picante pepper beers are oh! so rare these days. Offerings like Free Will's Safeword and Ballast Point's Habenero Scullpin seem to have been retired. Unfortunately, this provides no where near the Scovilles of those, but there is enough heat here to let the drinker know that this is a peppered beer. But, that's all there is. Overall, it's a mediocre porter with a nice dose of Chipotle, which elevates it, but not by much.

$ 9.00 (Including tax)/22 oz bottle ($ 0.409/oz). Purchased 4/13/20 at Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. Reviewed 4/16/20
Undated bottle. On room temperature shelf at store. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 50 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.
First pour – Amber (SRM 14), clear.
Body – Ruby brown (SRM 24), opaque. When held to direct light, slight ruby around top, weak effervescence. Light sediment is present.
Head – Small (Maximum 1.5 cm, aggressive center pour), khaki, fizzy, short retention, diminishing to a zero to one mm crown and no cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3.5 – Moderate roasted malt, no hops, no peppers, no yeastiness.
Flavor – 3 – Cloying sourness, almost gags me. No malt, no hops, no smoke, no yeast. No alcohol (7.5 % ABV as marked on the label) taste or aroma. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide. No pepper flavor, only a slight burn.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery, medium carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 2.75 (Lost 0.25 point for undated personal container) The gagging sourness and the sediment make me hopeful that this bottle is contaminated. Although I have not had many brews from Pipeworks, previous examples were quite good. My local distributor has only had this in stock for two weeks.

i really wanted this beer to do something more. it's got the pieces, but the whole just seems a bit lacking.

pours nice and dark. has a nice, smoky note to the smell but nothing really that grabs you. taste is a little acrid, some smoke, and some dried chili notes that kind of get lost. just a touch of heat at the very end, but nothing serious.

compared to other chili beers, this one just seems a little flat to me.

12 oz serving tasted in a snifter from draught at Firkin on February 12, 2018. For those crazy enough to think our smoked porter needed something more, we give you Chipotle Smoked Porter. In addition to the already bold character from the smoked malts, we bring the heat with a healthy dose of chipotle peppers to take this rich porter to the next level. Recommended pairing with a giant hunk of smoked meat and a big ass bon fire on a cold night.

A: The beer is very dark black in color—traces of dark red are visible near the edge of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a short off white head that quickly died down, leaving a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark and smoky malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, having flavors of dark and smoky malts along with notes of chili peppers.
M: It feels a bit more than medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The chili peppers lend a bit of heat to the finish.
O: This is a solid porter and the chili peppers add som complexity to the taste and mouthfeel. It doesn’t have too much heat for a chili beer.

Pretty thin on body. Notes of smoke and pepper come across as pleasant on nose, but the lack of legs kind of let this one get acrid on the palette. Malts seem to have the right flavor or smoke, but the body can’t stand up to it.

Pours a nearing-still black with only a bit of caramel-colored fizz rising and falling on top. Head retention is next to nilch, with no lacing left behind. Aroma is chipotle pepper, and liquid smoke. There is a dash of toasted malts as well. Flavor profile is smoked pepper, liquid smoke, chocolate, and toasted, biscuit malts. The spice doesn't linger long, but it is present. Mouth feel is a touch fizzy, with a crisp, soothing feel. Overall, it drinks well for a beer featuring chili peppers and smoke. It's very polarizing, but delivers on what the name suggests.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 22oz bottle.
