Bottle # 137 from the cellar

Pours hazy dark wood brown, a little light makes it through the glass. Head is a thin light tan film around the edge of the glass.

Smell is malt forward with aromas of toffee and some slight nutty aromas. There is also some slight aromas of honey and a light alcohol aroma.

Taste is malt forward with big flavors of honey some nut flavors and a big toffee malt sweetness. Very slight earthy spice and alcohol in the finish. Really tasty.

Mouthfeel is heavy in body with a big sticky malty sweetness. Very nice sipping beer.

Batch #107
(Served in a globe snifter)
A- This beer pours a murky deep dense caramel brown body with a thin ring of beige and some short legs show up with each swirl. There is a sluggish carbonation and some lumpy trub in the second class.

S- The clean aroma has faint hints of deep toasted malt when it warms up but not much else.

T- The watery taste leads to spicy malt notes with a slightly dry finish and some bittern notes lingering in the aftertaste. There is a slight woody oxidized malt note in the finish when it opens up. The tart hops note pushes through in the finish aswell.

M- The medium-light mouthfeel finishes thick with a velvety fizz and a nice alcohol warmth.

O- The doesn’t really have much malt flavor and the fizz and alcohol are the dominating flavors. They are nice but not enough for a barley wine.

Poured into a large 20 oz. mug. Murky light brown, off white foam rises and forms a compact layer of foam on the surface. A wispy halo of lace forms in the glass, and not much thereafter.

Aroma is grainy sweet specialty malt, slightly acidic with a twang from the yeast.

Bitter and sweet with overt alcohol, not much hop flavor other than the bitterness. Specialty malt gives it a somewhat one dimensional taste, booze is present, sweet honey graham cracker aftertaste. Medium bodied and sticky on the lips. Slowly sipping on this over the course of an hour, probably best shared.

2017: seems drier and less bitter with a multigrain bread crust and dried date and fig sweetness.

Poorer from a bottle. Dark burnt toffee flavor. Lacks lacing or head. Ex cells in flavor and nose. Sweet real caramel flavor unlike any beer I have ever had. A fantastic take on the English style where malts lead the way and hops are there to balance

22oz into a snifter.

A. Caramel color, small light-beige head.

S. Brown sugar, caramel, cooked apple, light citrusy hop notes. Similar to a lot of hoppy American barleywines, but a bit sweeter.

T. Piney bitterness, toffee, graham cracker, grapefruit.

M. Medium-bodied, light carbonation.

O. This is much too hoppy and bitter to really move it from an American-style to an English-style barleywine. Decent, but not my favorite effort from Pipeworks.
