Notes / Commercial Description:
Chai Dog, a spiced Imperial Milk Stout with vanilla and chocolate, is our answer to the chai tea. It's a rich, silky brew with a fragrant kick from the green cardamom, ginger, and anise. It's been a while since we've made this complex and balanced milk stout, and it's returned is like receiving a visit from a globe-trotting friend.

(Served in a nonic)

A- This beer pours an inky obsidian body with a rigors pour resulting in a thin head of large bubbles. There is gentle carbonation that can't maintain the head.

S- The aroma is full of green cardamom with hints of other dry warm spices falling behind.

T- The green cardamom has an almost minty quality to it with some some anise flavors pulling up behind it. There is a cinnamon vanilla note in the finish that takes on a tangy flavor. The roasted malt bitterness and alcohol bite kicks after each sip.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with an alcohol warmth at the finish.

O- The spice really dominates this beer with the malt bill hidden somewhere in there. The spices and tangy flavor are at odds with each other and the alcohol seems to make it more medicinal as it opens.

Batch 180

A: Pours a dark, dark brown. Has a very minimal dark beige head that lingers slightly as a ring around the glass.

S: Very, very interesting. Smells like spicy green tea infused stout. Minty dark chocolate and tea spice dominate. Some vanilla sweetness comes through and cinnamon.

T: Much like the nose. Very spicy, decently bitter with little sweetness from the chocolate and vanilla.

P: Thinner than I was expecting and hoping for at 10%, but it is smooth.

O: Odd. Wanting more out of this, but I suppose it's what it's supposed to be. Glad I tried it.

22oz bottle. This imperial milk stout from Pipeworks features the unique chai spices integrated into a delicious milk stout base. After drinking, I was shocked to learn this brew was 10% ABV. The warmth is very well hidden. Great beer!

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black with a small khaki head. Not a lot going on.

Smell - Huge tea aroma. I'm no tea freak, so I dunno if it's chai, but it's got a ton of spice to the nose. Faint caramel.

Taste - Still loads of spicy tea flavor. Some chocolate. Cinnamon is super strong.

Mouthfeel - Thin for a stout. Medium high carbonation.

Overall - Just didn't dig this. Too many adjuncts.

Batch #180

a: black as night. thinner than razor thin head.

s: Spices galore - cardamon, pepper, cinnamon. some vanilla and bits of cocoa.

t: primarily gingerbread, nutmeg, cinnamon. pepper spiciness lingers in the finish.

m: Creamy, light to medium body. smooth. low carbonation

o: Aroma on this is amazing but the taste fails to live up to the smell. A bit astringent and the taste gets fatiguing & harsh after a while as well. I really wanted to like this beer but ended up being slightly disappointed.

Try as I might, I couldn't get a lasting head on this... oh well. Jet black with a thin surface layer of audibly fizzy foam. Razor thin crescent of tan foam around one edge. No lasting lace or surface coverage.

Lightly spicy aromas, nutmeg, cardamom, vanilla, ginger cookies. Flavors also impart cinnamon, gingerbread, and more blended chai spices. Very unique and tasty, not overly sweet at all, the spices add a pleasant light bitterness. Creamy feel, light to medium bodied. Replicates a chai tea very well, this said as a frequent chai drinker. Seems like it would be great for cool autumn nights.

22 oz. bottle, Batch #680. My first time trying this one from Pipeworks. "Imperial milk stout with cacao, vanilla, and spices added".

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a deep dark chocolate, opaque in the glass, with one finger of dark dark mocha head. Leaves scattered spotty lacing behind.

S - The aroma definitely has a very authentic chai spice to it. Herbal, earthy, & leafy, with some notes of licorice / anise noticeable.

T - The taste is very fudgey, cakey, and chocolatey. The vanilla mostly melds with the cacao. Creamy, but the spicing isn't my favorite. Not sure I would know there was cinnamon in this if I wasn't told beforehand.

M - The feel is very smooth & creamy. Slightly on the thick side of things; medium-full bodied with good carb.

Overall, not the best stout I've had from Pipeworks, but still very good, and I would definitely say they achieved what they were going for, but the spicing doesn't really do a lot for me.

Pipeworks Chai Dog -----4/5.
