Spring is here! Things are green again! So is this delicious saison! Poivre Vert is brewed with cucumber, green peppercorns, and celery seed. It may not be easy being green, but it certainly is very easy and delicious drinking it.

from a bomber that has been sitting in my fridge since last fall into a GI tulip
a: massive foamy eggshell head that subsides within a minute and leaves great lacing, slightly hazy bright golden orange, some continuous bubbles
s: as advertised, but heavy on the celery seed, other than that, pretty mild nose: some earthy cucumber peel (and even a little musty), and a little white pepper...I'm not getting the yeast notes or any citrus that many saisons feature. Interesting...has my attention.
t: a little lemon and mild estery notes on the front, pretty inviting, and then celery seed (a little too much for me), cucumber (a bit too little) and pepper kick in at the end and linger on the finish, which is lightly vegetal. Interesting and well made, but doesn't work that well for me...I just can't get past the combination of the celery seed and pepper.
m: creamy, decent carbonation though I could go with a little more, a little less crisp snap at the end than is ideal, and a little more tartness would also be welcome.
overall: glad to try this one for the curiosity value, but just couldn't get around the flavor profile.

I love this beer on a hot day. Interesting favors that really work together, and very refreshing.

Opened and poured into oddly shaped glass (middle of a move and the proper ware is packed). The smell from the bottle was a lovely cucumber, but upon sticking my nose into the glass for the first sip, it hit hard and heavy with the celery and pepper - nearly "no Mr. Maggiano, I do not require THAT much cracked pepper on my side salad." The middle is where you taste the part of the beer that reminds you that you're drinking a beer. Then it's all wrapped up in a cucumber bow. Successive tastes mellowed out significantly, and it really hit a phenomenal groove. In retrospect, it's unfiltered so the abrupt first sip may have been due to a slight over agitation of the bottle prior to and during the poor.
Overall, it is a really refreshing but yet classy beer. A buddy asked if it was a good "afternoon round of golf" type of beer. I said more like a transitional beer. You're having one of those days where you look like you're a home depot commercial - some yard work, some fixing stuff, probably digging of some kind, now your a little tired and a lot dirty - and you have a black tie affair to attend that evening. This beer will cool you down and quench your thirst when you walk in the back door. This beer will hit the "beer spot" at beer o'clock while you're showering and shaving. This beer will make your mouth feel like a millionaire as you watch "How to tie a bow tie" you tube and affix you cuff links.
The only problem for me is I had one of those days, drank the Poivre Vert, but did not have an evening affair to attend. It left me all dressed up with nowhere to go. I guess that's my problem, not the beer's.

750 ml bottle, with Batch #202 handwritten on the label. Finally getting around to trying this saison from Pipeworks; the premise definitely sounds unique and interesting, so I'm excited to have it.
Poured into a clear balloon snifter.
A - Pours a nice cloudy golden yellow colored body with two and a half fingers of fizzy white head. Some thin lacing. Looks pretty good.
S - Sadly enough, cucumber doesn't really jump out as much as I'd hope, but it is definitely in there. Musty and vegetal. Creamy. Lemony. Fresh watery cucumber is apparent.
T - Lightly tart and spritzy, lemony and citric up front, with underlying herbal vegetal qualities. I would never know there was peppercorns or celery seed in this without being told.
M - Feel is smooth, creamy, fluffy, spritzy, and clean. Lightly tart citric sort of finish. Light-bodied with good carbonation.
Overall, a nice example of a saison, but not as vegetal as I'd expected, but I suppose it's all a matter of perspective. Either way, it's a delicious beer, I recommend it, and I would have it again.
