On tap at Piper's Pub...has a dark caramel brown undertone masked by a dark cloak with a light tan head forming thick. Aroma has roasted malt complexity that will keep you sniffing in your glass, dark fruit solid grain base with herbal hops executes a nearly perfect dunkel lager. Penn needs to take some notes on the reformulation of thier Penn Dark. Flavor has sweet cereal grains balanced with enough dark roasts to make it work well together. Again juicy dark fruit notes with a hint of chocolate, so enjoyable with a creamy quality. Mouthfeel was excellent sturdy flowing carbonation dry roasted malt finish with enough sweetness to creat a pleasant experience on the palate. This beer wasn't reinventing the wheel it's a throwback to an often forgotten great version of a German style beer that I know and love.

Growler from Brewery: This one pours a ruby tinged, clear brown color. There was a small tan head on it that left a little lacing. The aroma is nice. Caramel malts, a hint of sourness, some fruits. Hints of roastiness also. The taste is also quite good. Slightly sweet caramel malts with a faint sourness in the finish. Some fruits also. Very smooth and easy drinking. The brewer told me this is essentially the same beer he brewed at the old Red Star under the same name. That’s a good thing, since I used to enjoy it in my trips to the area. Glad to have it back!
