Looked like it may be a busy place at times but on my visit I saw too many missing tip pulls ....looked like to many missing things I may have tried.

I had never been here until my coworkers told me to meet there for post-kitchen beers. This is a German-themed bar, tired-looking and very dark.
They have a good amount of taps (and an up-to-date menu on PhillyTapFinder), but compared to other Old City bars like Khyber Pass or Bierstube's sister bar Eulogy, nothing here really screams "drink me now!".
There's Nugget Nectar, Rodenbach, Allagash Curieux, Schneider Aventinus and some other crafty brews... but also Hoegaarden, Stella and Leffe.
Check out the bottle selection- they have a cool happy hour where you can choose a mystery bottle for three, four or five dollars. It's fun.
But I'll be honest- one and done. Glad I stopped in here; there is no need for me to come back. Average all around.

Noisy, dumb techno music, fair beer selection.

In the heart of busy old city on Market street, I stepped into this dark, medium sized bar that I have been walking past many times. It was a pleasant surprise to find this old world atmosphere on an early afternoon and almost no one was there. The bartender was very knowledgeable about beer so we carried on a 15 minute conversation about beer and I even went with her recommendation and was very pleased. About 18 drafts with some local beers, and solid German and Belgian selections. There are at least 100 more in bottles and they tend to be shying away from the more common imports and have an adventurous selection at reasonable prices.
I stopped in briefly before work so I did not stay long. I will be back to try more beer and food in the near future.

This is a new German eatery in the Old City. It is dark and cozy with the usual Teutonic flair. The menu, of course, carries the usual hearty German grub: sausages, schnitzel and spaetzel - a of it delicious. And no gut German would think of dining without beer, and Bierstube has much to offer, tap and bottles. A wunderbar experience! Nicht wahr.
Note: They are sister to Eulogy Belgian Tavern, which is the next street north.

Another addition to the Old City bar scene that focuses on quality beers. We stopped in mid week around 6:00 and there was a good crowd in the place. The bar can seat about 10 people, and there are plenty of tables spread around. There is a seperate smaller bar on the downstairs level which we sat at during a visit a few months ago when the upstairs was packed. The place is very dark overall, and there is stained glass in the middle of the bar that really sticks out.
There is a nice sized blackboard on the wall just off the kitchen entrance that lists all the 18 beers on draft which cover mostly German and Belgian style beers with a nice mix of American breweries. I enjoyed a Weihenstephaner and a Daisy Cutter on my most recent visit and both were very fresh. They have a substaintial beer bottle list of well over 100 beers.
Service was super friendly, prompt, and knowledgable. We did not have any food here as we had other plans, but the beers were satisfying enough. If you are in the area of 3rd and Market, it is definitely a place to check out.

My first impression of this place was, "This is exactly what Eulogy would look like if they cleaned up their act." Then I realized Bierstube is owned by Eulogy, so it makes sense. The bar is almost identical, right down to the stained glass window in the middle, and the menus are essentially exactly the same too. Anyway, the place is nice, dimly lit, spacious, medium-sized bar with plenty of seats, and seemingly a back room that I didn't venture into. If you could meld Eulogy with Brauhaus Schmitz, you'd get Bierstube, Philly. It's a mix of German and Belgian, from the beer to the menu. Aside from a nice selection of locals and typical craft brews on tap, there are both Belgian and German standards, and the bottle list--while not as massive as Eulogy--kind of weeds out some of the more "unnecessary" selections and adds things from the more contemporary side of the beer scene. For example, on my first visit, I enjoyed a De Struise Ignis et Flamma, and backed that up with an Elysian Night Owl. The menu displays a good fusion of styles too, with everything from mussels to knackwurst. The food was good...I had a tasty grilled cheese and fries that, unlike Eulogy, didn't taste like it was deep fried in a vat of 2-year-old grease. (Not that I hate Eulogy...it used to be my favorite bar; but they've let themselves slide over the years.) The crowd wasn't huge, but the service was fine, and the bartender was on the ball, and in tune with the beer scene. Prices were about on par for Old City.
Overall, this is a great new place, and I'm definitely likely to stop in again. And I'd probably pick Bierstube over Eulogy these days.

Right on Market Street this place sits one block away from Eulogy (the bar that owns Bierstube). Initially intended to be a German-Asian hybrid, it ended up with a menu including only a sprinkle of that fusion. It appeared to be a clean split of Belgian/German with a hint of asian in some of the dishes. The thing that was most noticable was the vibe/decor with a clean relaxed lounge feeling. Plenty of beer parafernalia and a contemporary beer tavern feel. The menu included mostly German dishes and a handful of Belgian fares. The beer menu included somewhere around 15 draughts and 60 bottles or so. Once again, mostly German and Belgian. If you are looking for a place with a decent menu/vib/beer selection this is a nice spot. For beer lovers, there are a handful of other places in the city with a more vast selection, and for anyone looking for German authenticity, this place offers a limited amount of that in some dishes/beers. With alot of hype surrounding this place as a German spot, and the proclamation of being a German tavern I will say this...Bierstube is not the place to go for the best German beer/food/selection or authenticity. Brauhaus Schmitz is undoubtedly leagues ahead in those respects. If you're looking for a new/relaxed spot with a decent menu, Bierstube is a good choice but if you want real authentic German atmosphere, large German beer selection and many dishes, don't look there.
