22oz Bomber

Crop Bistro's Helles is yet another appreciated brew sent my way by facesnorth, thanks a ton, Ryan! We have ourselves a muddied harvest orange beer with shimmering golden highlights around the sides and bottom of the glass. The head is pure white and robust, easily rising to a couple fingers high before slowly crackling down to a sturdy cap. Spiderwebbed lacing briefly sticks to the glass before falling back into the body.

The nose is jam packed full of clean bready maltiness. Crisp, bright, freshly husked grains fill the nose before the doughy and rustic bread maltiness take hold. There's a pleasant spicy hop character adding depth and it's coupled with soft herbal qualities. The malt and hop profile are even handed and compliment each other beautifully.

As the nose suggested the breadiness is all encompassing and clean, refreshing. A spicy noble hop character kicks in mid-palate and pushes through to the finish, the mild herbal quality flashing through briefly. The grains again taste fresh and bright with a heartiness that makes me salivate after each drink.

The body's weight is squarely in the middle of the spectrum. There's a good velvety feel but if I had one minor gripe it would be that I'd like a little more snap to the carbonation. The bubbles are soft, and luxurious actually, but I think a more snappy carbonation would benefit the style. Drinkability? It's up there.

Crop Bistro's Helles is a little darker than I expected. I figured the malt would be a little too rich for my liking but I'm happily mistaken. It's bright, hearty, flavorful, and ridiculously drinkable. I wouldn't mind having a fridge full of these. Thanks again, Ryan! Great choice!

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on August 11, 2014.

The pour is pale yellow mostly with busy carbonated bubbles leading up to a semi-lingering white fizzy head.

Aroma of toasted malts, yeast remnants, grassy hops, and and slight fruity note.

Medium body.

Toasty taste with a kind of butterscotch hint. I was not blown away but I would not turn it down if offered to me again.

First had: on tap at Crop

Pale golden color, slight chill haze, with a small cap of white head that receded to a wispy thin layer, minimal lacing. Sweet malty aroma, with light notes of sugary fruits and spicy but subdued hops. Taste was, well, lagery, yet a bit lacking in the malt profile I thought, light, biscuity, light indistinct fruit, and I could swear I picked up a hint of coriander and/or clove. Light body, easily drinkable, but a little off the mark. I'm generally not a lager guy anyway; this one was decent.
