Riding on the acclaim of their Black Gold porter, this amped up version boasts a personal favorite combination of flavors- chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and capsaicin to frame the infamous taste of Mexican hot chocolate. But with that iconic Country Boy bourbonized flirtation.

Dark brown and lightly carbonated, the notions of hot chocolate sell well to the eye. A delicate necklace of froth skirts the margins of the glass and provide the nose with a Mexican spice overlay to the caramel, chocolate and coffee flavors beneath. Its malty-sweet taste is of caramel, toffee and brown sugar with tightly woven stands of vanilla.

The mouth quickly saturates with creamy sweetness, chocolate and coffee- just enough of a buffer to resist the harsh pang of jalapeƱo and cinnamon that rise to balance the malt. Savory, surly and spicy, the final flavors introduce stern bourbon character with its own vanilla, char, caramel and coconut.

With the peppery warmth building and merging with substantial alcohol, the finish is heated and sharp. However, there's just enough lingering malt creaminess and body to keep the full bodied beer supported and complex late. Trailing chocolate and cinnamon frame the aftertaste with the ghost of bourbon keeping the session spicy and strong.

Very coffee forward the Mexican part seems to be the earthy pepper tones that touch the palate and warm the back of the throat. Chocolate malts tease throughout but the peppery Jalapeno adds warmth but never overwhelms. Bourbonesque qualities seem to be apparent but get lost in the light vanilla, coconut, chocolate and pepper.

Day two of Country Boy Brewing's 3rd Anniversary brings us a bourbon barrel aged version of the standard Black Gold Porter, this time with a Mexican Chocolate theme. Cocoa nibs and jalapeno peppers (and another pepper I can't remember). The heat is subdued, but will linger on your lips as you work on a glass, and the cocoa is very smooth.
