With the connection that Lexington area brewers have with the bourbon industry around them, they seem to have an endless supply of the most select bourbon barrels in existence. Experimentation runs amuck and every once in a while, magic happens. Country Boy's Living Proof: Wild Red Ale nestles into Blanton bourbon barrels for a whisky soaked, sour session that's just as robust as it is thirst quenching.

The Blanton Cherry Red Ale pours with a rusty, tawny garnet with threads of red cherry showing a glimpse into the fruit ahead. Red wine, whisky, oaken barrel nuances, balsamic and sherry all tease the nose with a peppery twinge and a candied scent. Pulled candy, steely caramels and a lightly toasted nuttiness emits from the pits of maltiness and soothes the early palate.

And then the full brunt of culinary art explodes on the tastebuds, bringing the strong black cherry flavors to the foreground of taste. Macerated stone fruit adds a brisk acidity to the already sour taste of balsamic, bordeaux wine, brandy and port. Sweetness fades and the toasty, nutty and oaken remnants of taste are pleasantly cola-like with umami-rich aspects of sherry adding a savory oxidized element of complexity. Vanilla, coconut, wood spice and caramel keep the complexity coming as the ale trails into a tannic-rich balance and a light tea-like bitterness.

Medium bodied, but seeming full for sour ale, the beer's linger of malt keeps a weight on the finish that buffers from the strong spices of wood, the light acetone alcohol or the subtle hop bitterness in finish. Bright but robust, rich but refreshing, deep yet subtle, this Living Proof variant hits on all cylinders.
