Notes: Historically the term used to describe a porter blended from a variety of ales, entire butt uses 14 different malts and 3 hops to recreate this forgotten style of porter. The beer is black/brown with a crisp white head and is distinctly vinuous. It has little hop character as essentially the flavour is derived from the malts. Malts used: pale Maris Otter, lager, wheat, pale crystal, dark crystal, dark chocolate, pale chocolate, black, roasted barley, caramalt, torrified wheat, amber malt, brown malt and malted oats.

Great Porter! Deeeep Chestnut in color with a tad of amber around the rim. Fairly decent head and decent lace. Aromas are beautiful with coffee, nutmeg and roasted chocolate malt. Medium bodied offering that tangy quality found in the first cup of coffee of the day. Waves of bitter chocolate come in to play as the crisp, tangy coffee notes subside. Te beer finishes long and memorable. A must try, and my next mate with rib eye.

Appearance: Pours out a deep brown body with a nice tan head that sticks aroound for a while and then leaves a collar; some lacing

Smell: A wondrous mixture of a range of dark beer smells - chocolate, coffee, vanilla, dark fruits, smoke, roasted malt - it's all there

Taste: Starts out with a a rich, woody, bitter coffee flavor that, after a few seconds is complemented by a brief complement of hops; the finish brings more coffee and smoky elements

Mouthfeel: Just a tad thin of being medium bodied with modest levels of carbonation

Drinkability: An excellent example of a forgotten style; kudos to the brewer for bringing it back

Poured from 330mL bottle into a dimpled mug.

Appearance: rich, dark brown with a clear body and ruby highlights. There's a finger of frothy dark-tan foam atop; it's quite attractive in my book.

Smell: very sweet, almost molasses-ey, with that same sour tang that molasses has. It almost has a bit of a cola or kvass aroma to it as well; I really like it.

Taste: roasty malt, molasses, bread; there's a little bit of raisin thrown in along with some tobacco. It tastes like the richest kvass I've ever had. What an interesting beer!

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent level of carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: I really like this beer; although it has a combination of roasty finish and up-front sweetness that work at odds initially, the combination is really making me want another sip. Fascinating stuff!

Black in hue, reddish-dark brown when backlit, it is an ideal shade. The head was faint beige in color and the foamy mass was rocky. Head retention was good; it slowly faded to a chunky, clunky, ugly cap. A tight (more polished) cap lasted the whole consumption. There was subsequent webby, thick lacing. This is a good-looking beer.

The nose is airy and weakly malty, however there is this trace aroma that reminds me of SA Triple Bock. How odd! I smell prunes, if not Dr. Pepper. Tobacco. Chocolate. There wasn’t much straight roasted qualities, this was odd, I mean this is a Porter, right? The nose does say “dark beer” but no further description was articulated. The nose is okay. Inviting… kind of.

The palate fails to jump up and grab my attention. There is a malty, pruney vibe… like Shiner Bock. What the hell is going on? The black jellybean taste is nice and the raisins are likable. There isn’t much roast. I couldn’t smell it and I now can’t taste it. This is a bland beer. I was happy to see this beer in Omaha but I won’t buy it again… unless I find out their bottle coding system. Is this old? “L5-014.”

Medium/medium-light in body, low carbonation, the mouthfeel is weak and it follows nicely with the lousiness of the nose and taste.

This is not a well-brewed beer. Not drinkable… not worth a damn really. Am I missing something here? It was $4… no thanks. This is a dud.

Very dark brown, when held up to the light, otherwise does a nice impression of being black. Big rocky mocha head slowly settles to rocky uslands.

Nose is quite complex - as if the whole malt industry were assaulting your nostrils. Roasty coffee and chocolate are the predominant notes though. An nice earthiness comes out with time.

Not surprisingly a ton of malt on the palate, with just a touch of wineyness. Again the chocolate and coffee notes dominate. Its quite light on the palate, and not very long. Quaffable, but ultimately a bit too malt-centric to be really interesting.

Entire Butt pours a clear dark brown/black into the glass. Brown hues highlight the edges. On top a small, fizzy off white head forms which dissolves quickly to a thick ring around the surface. Lots of spots and patches of lace line the glass.

The aroma is malty with notes of toffee, chocolate and some earthy nuttyness. Hints of dark fruit are also present.

Each sip of this medium bodied brew is slick and watery on the palate with a mild carbonated fizz. The flavor is malty and tart. It begins with toffee and chocolate. In the middle dark fruit notes of raisins and molasses move in. The fruity notes make it slightly tart. It finishes dry with a taste of pistachio nuts and floral hops.

This is a tasty, easy drinking beer. Slightly thin, but otherwise a terrific brew.

Presentation: 500ml wide bodied brown glass bottle with a thin bowling pin shaped neck. Colorful main label per the BA avatar. Listed at 4.8& ABV with a Lot/Best Before 1 04 – 114. Reverse label explains a little about this intriguing brew.

Appearance: Simply stunning appearance in the glass, awesome dark brown body with a lovely creamy tan head that laces nicely. Soft carbonation is finely dispersed. Supreme looks.

Nose: Dominated by malts, old Brown Ale, roasted malts and a light hint of sweet coffee wrap the back end. Inviting and definitely Porter-like.

Taste: Dark malts and lots of them, rich and creamy in the mouth the malts take this Porter to a time past. Light roasted feel and some middling chocolate coffee traits. Gets better as it sits and warms, some dark fruity flavors

Mouthfeel: Solid feel, the fourteen malts add dept whilst the three types of hops add a little bitterness to balance the proceedings.

Drinkability: Easy enough to partake with food, perfect with a Ploughman’s Lunch and a strong Cheddar Cheese, yet a solid drinking Porter on its own.

Overall: Extremely enjoyable beverage, one that drinks well with immense flavor. A session Porter of sorts, and definitely one of the better English Porters.

Highly Recommended.

Roasty, but not only roasty. Bready, crusty aromas are joined by subtle doses of coffee and roasted twigs.
On the palate it's corsetted with charcoal and iron-flavored tannins. A nice sandy fizz cascades quickly away to reveal plump pale malts, seasoned woods, dried grasses and chocolate. Milky viscosity underwrites the wild, dry and weathered aromatic features.
Highly drinkable because it is so interesting. It leaves a big footprint of broadly ranging flavors, only without any sign of sticky, heavy, or alcoholic residue. Very complex and a little tough.

Slightly over carbonated, bottle conditioned, 3" high brownish rocky head over a clear, deep ruby color when back lit. Aromas of toffee and charred wood, a bit musty at first- oxidation odors fade quickly. Light in body with some hard water astringency, but big in dark grain nuttyness and chocolate malt richness giving way to grassy resinous hop flavors and lingering bitter finish. This bottle was a little past prime but still a great example of a traditional Porter.

Dark brown almost black, light brown head, a little sediment.
Varied malty smell, coffee and chocolate.
A high cocoa dark chocolate taste - like good Belgian bitter chocolate. The bitterness blends in and feels like it is coming from the chocolate - very nicely done. A lot of dark flavors coffee,caramel- a roasted aspect, a little oat in there as well.
Smooth and very full. I wish I bought more than one

Re-review, correcting my disappointing first bottle nearly 5 years ago. Now, I've got a freshly poured pint in front of me. Let's do it.

Dark brown body, with ruby highlights. Tan head, with greenish tints. Classic.

Aroma: cocoa and cream, with a hint of vanilla. Lush malt, excellent balance, not too green, not too sweet. Clean and mellow. Excellent.

Taste: Minor hop buzz up front, that stays in play, if on the sidelines, while malt moves in. That sour green apple flavor is there, the one that spoiled that bottle for me, but it's way down there, mixed with grassy notes, and then the cocoa, and then the coffee. A complex blend of malts, it's a cliche', but it's also true.
Great thirst-quencher, surprisingly refreshing. And, amazingly enough, unless I'm fooling myself, I can see where the parts come together. Mild ale, brown ale, and a soured old ale, minus the booze .

This would definitely be a great session ale, if not for the high cost. Guess I have to rely on more affordable porters for that, but I can really appreciate the effort they put into it. With each touch to the lips, delicious malt, sweet brown sugar, grassy hops, chocolate-y goodness, slipping down the throat.
Yum, and yum.

Package: 50cl, broad-shouldered, crowned, brown bottle. “Best before 12/04/04.” 4.8% ABV. Detailed description of ingredients, brewing, and serving instructions.

Cost: $3.35/bottle at Gary’s

Presentation: Label instructions require chilling a bottle stored at 58º for ½ hour. As even my cellar is more like 50º, I chilled this to 52º, assuming this was close to the goal. It also recommends serving in a Worthington glass, which I don’t possess, but which I found out was like a 12oz. tumbler, which is what I used.

Appearance: Unlike many porters which are very dark brown, this was stout-black; admitting very little light. It generated very little head, mostly large-gauge bubbles. Resolved down to a patchy slick.

Smell: Despite the relatively warm serving temperature, this exhibited only a moderate aroma, mostly of roasted malt and a touch of bittersweet chocolate. Little essence of fruit or sweet malt.

Taste: Perhaps the very elaborate description on the label set my expectations too high, but the symphony of 14 malts and 3 hops I expected did not materialize. This was very heavy on the roasted malt element, making this taste like a thin stout, rather than a rich porter, with the expected muted hop top notes. The label challenges you to see how many one can identify. Well, rest assured, I couldn’t discern 14 of them! My guess is there is too much wheat and roast barley in the mix. I couldn’t detect the subtler fruity, nutty, woody elements I’ve detected in other porters. Finish was short and somewhat bitter.

Mouthfeel: Despite the bottle-conditioning, this was only moderately smooth and velvety. The body was also on the thin side.

Drinkability: Not a bad beer for drinking in quantity, but doesn’t quite justify choosing it over Fullers London Porter or Smuttynose Robust Porter.

I REALLY wanted to love this beer, and was quite taken with the description on the label, but the result doesn’t really justify the hype. I found myself looking for the taste elements I find so easily in other porters. Perhaps I drank this too young (the date promised more than a year of aging).

Backwash: Not a bad beer, but it competes in a tough segment, and promises too much.

Color was darkd brown with amber tint.
Amazing thick tan head that didn't dissappear quickly. It slowly settled to a nice permanent layer of lace.
Aroma and taste were one of the most complex I have ever tried.
Hints of sweet toffee, roasted malt, and even a small hint of nuttiness. You have to sip this beer to get all of the flavors. It changes from the time it hits your tounge, to after you swallow and are left with a nice aftertaste. Smoothe and a little creamy texture.
Must get some more of this.

The color is a sherry/brown,it's lightly carbonated with a light tan colored head with little retention.The aroma is slightly musty/prune-like.
It has a lightly smokey-coffee flavor that finishes somewhat dryly with a minimal hop presence.
For my tastes,the beer has an overall light mouthfeel for a porter,but the flavor is well balanced.
I could drink this beer on a regular basis.

My kids (7 & 10) got a big kick out the name of this beer. I'll admit to buying it mostly because of the name myself, plus my affinity for English beer. The label had a best before date of 12-4-04. I'm assuming that they mean December 4th, not April 12th, as the label had all the usual US legal gobbledygook. In any case, still way within the freshness date. It's probably best to drink this fresh, and not to cellar it, because, even though it's bottle conditioned, the ABV is only 4.8%, and there's not much hoppiness (which I'll get to in a minute.)

It poured with a black body, and a proud, creamy head, almost nitro-like in its appearance. Aromas were of chocolate, coffee, currant. Tastes were chocolate, coffee, toffee, butterscotch, currant, malt, and a faint fleeting glimpse of lemon. The label says that 14 different malts were used, and I'd believe it! No hops were mentioned. I'm sure they're in there, but you'd be hard-pressed to find them. Definitely a beer for malt mavens.

Mouthfeel was creamy smooth, reminded me of Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout. The finish was coffee and sweet malt.

An amazingly complex beer for only 4.8% ABV. You could think of this as a session porter, but I think the complexity would overwhelm your tongue. I'd love to see what this brewery would do with an Imperial Stout!

16.9 oz. bottle. Picked this up in KC, MO. Not available here in Wichita.

Appearance: A very dark beer that appeared deep red when held up to the light. A one-finger, light tan head rose up and fizzed away fairly quickly. However, a thin layer of very dense bubbles was left behind that lingered for a long time. There was a light smattering of lace left behind.

Smell: Classic aromas of milk chocolate, cream, and hints of coffee. A light smokey smell was also present. It was nice to detect a relatively strong hoppiness and a shot of yeast, not things that are always present in the aroma of a porter. Hints of cherries underneath.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and creamy smooth and coating on the tip of the tongue. Some fuzzy carbonation developed as the beer moved back in the mouth.

Taste: Dark roasted, husky malt and acidic black coffee upfront. This developed into a sharp dark fruit flavor in the middle. A strong dose of hops drove through on the finish and lingered into the aftertaste along with some yeast.

A decent beer, but lacking complexity and the round, warm character of a porter.

A very black porter allowing no light to shine through. Creamy head settles down to a thin slick oftan foam. Very stout-like in appearance. Has a dry roasted malt like aroma with hints of chocolate. Mouthfeel is not quite full but pretty close to a Guiness. Flavor is malty oats and a dry bitter chocolate. This is nearly a stout in my opinion. Not a great one but not all that bad either.

When poured into my glass, this beer had a very small head that quickly diminished. There was no lacing present on the sides of my glass. The hue of this beer is black. The nose is roasted coffee and chocolate. The flavor is strong roasted coffee from start to finish. The mouthfeel is smooth, thin and somewhat watery.

This pours out is makes a noticeable glug glug sound from the shape of the bottle. The label says best before 12-04-04. This pours a jet black that's opaque as can be, not even any colors around the edges when held up to the light. Nice thick billowing tan head, about a finger thick and is falls to nice covering with dark carbonation circles scattered about with foam around them, like atolls. The aroma is sweet caramel, chocolate covered cherries, and plums; there seems to be a lot going on here. The taste is dark roasted malts and coffee, with some light fruits. The mouth feel is very thin and surprisingly light, which makes it pretty drinkable. Not bad, first English porter, not bad at all very smooth taste, that's very well blended.

Pretty good porter, though I may have gotten a bottle a bit past its prime. Poured with little head but decent carbonation. Taste was dominated by chocolate, coffee, maybe a little toffee and the slightest bit of hops. Mouthfeel was a touch thin, perhaps from age. A pretty drinkable beer and I'd love to get a fresher example to compare. Plus, you have to love the name.

A friend and I tried this beer along with Deep Shaft Stout. Because it made us laugh. And we're cool like that. Pours a really dark brown/black color with little to no head. Very strong aroma - malty, coffee. The flavor was ... coffee. Strong coffee. Maybe a little chocolate, but definately some roasted (coffee) in there. Not bad, but it could use a little something else.

Medium bodied, very dark opaque reddish brown - almost black - with a thin milk chocolate colored head that vanishes quickly.

The aroma is caramel, coffee and plums.

The taste is complex- coffee and cream, toffee, caramel, light chocolate and a touch of plums or maybe cherries? All flavors are mild and mellow, well blended and balanced. No noticeable hops flavor, just a hint of bite at the finish with a lingering coffee aftertaste.

Very smooth. An excellent porter.

black with slight ruby coloring when held up to the light. no head at all. was there a leak in my bottle? no wait i see fine little bubbles rising in the glass. chocolate, coffe, maltiness dominate the smell. chocolate, coffee, a not quite smokey flavor maybe some sort of wood, a rich prune/grape flavor backing up the coffee and chocolate. ok body, but so friggin thin for the flavor. i would also like to see a *little more carbonation, it's nearly flat. i'm pretty impressed mostly with the taste, but it's not without it's imperfections.

The beer pours a dark brown/black color with a thick frothy offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a rich and complex malt scent that is derived from 14 different malts. It has a black and roasted malt aroma with little hop scent present. The taste is good as well. It has a dry, yet sweet malt flavor that boasts of crystal, black, and roasted malts with a nutty Marris Otter taste. The bottle says it contains oats. That would explain the dry, husky feel. This has a complex malt bill to say the least. The mouthfeel is good. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a one tastey brew; a great drinker.

A very dark brown, nearly black and opaque. Has a very small light brown head, but has some lace. The aroma has a malty sweetness with molasses undertones. The flavor gets a good start with some roasted malt character. Then there is a hint of chocolate and coffee just before a nice dry finish.
