Ruby see thru blackish pour with beige head into SAPP. Caramel, licorice, and roasted malt nose. Dry, lite mouthfeel. Nice lite English porter with a slightly sweet Carmel finish.

Pours a deep black with a small tan head. Aroma and Taste is of dark roasted chocolate malt, caramel, dark fruit esters, even some dark berry notes mixed in as well, yeast and mild bitterness on the end from the dark roasted malt. A smooth medium body with mild carbonation. The finish is sweet dark roasted chocolate malt, caramel, dark fruit and berries with mild dry bitter roasted ending with lingering chocolate and caramel flavors. Overall a very delightful, tasty and enjoyable English Porter. very nice.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Oct 2013, so it's just out of date. ABV is stated as 4.6%. Picked up a while back from the York Wine & Beer shop. Hopefully it's still in good condition. The label mentions that this is brewed with an incredible 14 malts.

Poured into a straight pint glass. Bottle conditioned (and a little lively). A deep reddish-brown hue that appears almost black in the glass. Fine sediment throughout. Yields a small head of creamy beige foam that lasts for a moment before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of sweet, fruity malt with hints of dried fruit, caramel, faint brown sugar, grain, mild roasted notes, a pinch of vanilla and ale yeast. Complex but quite subtle.

Tastes of roasted malt with a fruity character and a malty, bitter finish. Notes of roasted grain, dark malt, dried fruit, mild coffee, subtle molasses, ale yeast, earthiness and stewed leaves. Well-attenuated yet faintly sweet, followed by a malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with soft carbonation and good body for the strength. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of roasted malt, bitter stewed hops and yeast.

Pretty good, but it doesn't bowl me over. Looks OK, though the head doesn't hang around for long. The aroma and flavour are pleasant - dominated by roasted grain and fruity malt. Intriguingly the aroma is rather muted. Body is alright. A well-crafted porter but a tad underwhelming. Perhaps this bottle is just too old? I'll try and re-review at some point. Worth sampling if you come across it.

Pours dark brown with ruby highlights. Hard to tell if it's cloudy, but the beer looks pretty clear in the light. Nice, glowy color. Medium tan head. Lots of fine bubbles. After a few minutes, there's still a decent film of bubbles. I'm getting chocolate maltiness as the primary flavor in the aroma, but it's backed up by a mix of fruit, nutty brown malt, caramel, molasses, light coffee/roast and a hint of wood. There's a lot of malt complexity to this beer. Very nice toasty malt notes. A rather rich aroma for <5% abv. The flavor is a touch weaker for me. The malt complexity is still there, but some of the rich sweetness is gone. It starts out with a fairly simple sweetness before bringing in some nice fruity flavors and takes its time pulling out the chocolate and roast. Good finish with roast, tobacco and earth hops lingering for some time. Mouthfeel is smooth. Drinks big for the abv. British brewers know how to pack flavor into lower abv beers. Sits a bit light on the palate, though. Not the best impersonation of cask mouthfeel for a bottled beer that I've found, but it's always a losing effort and it's still nice. This is an enjoyable porter with lots of rich British malt flavor in a relatively small package. I would love to see more American brewers make a serious effort with this sort of beer.

I got this at Beer Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

A. A very deep, dark brown. A bit see-through around the edges, but mostly dark. A bit of head, but not much.

S. A wonderful chocolate scent and nutty.

T/M. It has a biting vegetable taste to it. A bit of chocolate. Malty. Tingly and zesty, not much in the smooth realm. Very delicious. A mild soapy flavor. A hint of sour toward the end.

O. It's a zesty porter. Complex in flavor, so much so that it would probably be awesome if bottled and aged.
