Review: 33cl bottle of St. George Beer: ABV: 4.7%

The beer has an interesting cover on its bottle. We get to see a medieval type knight slaying a dragon. Plus there is funny looking writing on the label which I’m led to believe is the Amharic language, the ancient language of Ethiopia. Overall it is a nice stand out distinct design and in a lovely looking brown bottle.

On appearance we get a nice golden colour and a nice big head on the pour. A lot of nice carbonation going on. Overall it looks a good beer, very clear and a decent head but colour and head both fade a little and there is no lacing.

Aroma is faint but I got a sweet malty smell and some barely, bit tinty and lagery as well.

Taste: Has an off taste, initial taste of cardboard? Not nice at all, like unprocessed straw. Not nice at all. Very sweet grain flavours and sweet malted barely tastes.

Second pint, slightly better but still not great to be honest, very sweet, too much so, and very corny. Not a session beer for sure, or for anything to be fair.

I so wanted this to be a good beer. but I guess its a long way to Ethiopia, and I’m sure it tastes better under an African sun……………

It is the worst of all Ethiopian beers, but passable for a night of 10's.

Tastes of corn. Mild head. Not awful but certainly not great. Purchased solely because it is Ethiopian, might as well have bought Beast.

Bottle, $2.99. Obscure Ethiopian tick = awesome.

A light golden yellow with a dense white head that falls off leaving what is actually nice-looking lacing, this looks pretty good! The nose is an acceptable blend of light cereal sweetness, doughy malts, a mild hop character that's got notes of dust and earth and a mild vegetal note as well. Nothing patently offensive here.

The palate is crisply carbonated, lending an acidity to an otherwise insipid palate. A little bit of cereal and grain sweetness is present, but this is carbonated and watery to a fault, lending a seltzer-like feel. On the bright side, it does scrub the vegetal notes, but that's not particularly a good thing as there is no flavor here. The flip side is that there are no off-flavors here, which is more than I can say for a lot of breweries these days. Light, watery, seltzer-like on the palate, this is pretty forgettable.

Appearance: Pours a mostly clear, yellow body with a thin, white head. Oh, and very fine, tiny particles suspended in the beer.

Smell: Simple nose of light pale malts and corn. Wait, what's that? Could it be? It couldn't. No, wait, it is! It's Saint George leading a charge of flavor and beer-based enjoyment. Hooray!

Taste: Light pale malts and a sturdy handful of corn stirred up with a light sweetness. Faint floral hop character with an equally faint bitterness. Finishes dry with a final taste of cereal grains.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium-low carbonation.

Drinkability: A bit under par, but, ultimately, it's pretty bearable considering it's a refugee from an impoverished nation.

330ml bottle poured into pint glass jan23 2010

A clear straw yellow with some tiny particles being moved around by a couple big bubbles that float up to a fast falling fingers worth of head that leaves a single patch of lace

S not much some corn perhaps and a little lemon

T what I smell but with a hint of skunk

M pretty thin even for the style and could use some more carbonation

D just a little off but nothing gross

not worth looking for but one way to knock off a country

Pours a clear golden color with a 1/4 finger of white head.

Light hints of grainy malt with a slight hint of hops.

Light grainy notes with a hint herbal hops.

Light and drying feel with moderate amount of carbonation.

The drinkability isn't terrible but this one doesn't exactly wow me.
