Style: American Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.50%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Arête is a blended barleywine, constructed over two separate batches (one of which was particular dry and high in ABV) that was then dry-hopped, the result being a significantly detailed American-style version with a tremendous amount of depth. This is 100% Centennial hops throughout, but it feels way more expansive than a single-hop beer should.

Pouring a deep amber-brown color, Arête offers an herbaceous, fresh-mown character, some deeper and subtle citrus notes, along with an engaging floral character. It's a one-hop wonder, but we'd have never guessed so. There's some dark-fruit, leathery complexity, soft brown sugar and caramel, with a soft, red-fruit alcohol note. Fine carbonation keeps things on point. Bitterness is just enough, while the interior notes of this beer build with warmth: chewy caramel, toffee, brown sugar.

This is a really nice beer with a strong peanut brittle and toffee. This is malty with very little booziness, caramel and chocolate. It has an oddly light feel that didn't match the flavor but it was still a good beer.

12 oz bottle, dated 9.10.15.

Arete is amber red, fairly clear, with a light head that doesn't last. This is an amazingly light barleywine in look, taste, and feel, with a phenomenal flavor. It doesn't seem like a BIG beer, and it's not obvious that it's 12.5%. It's just ethereal in its smoothness. Hoppy bitterness, some caramel, and the alcohol are all present, but nothing dominates. It's a great example of how to balance flavors in a wonderful blend. Great barleywine, almost like an English barleywine, but a little more hoppy.

A: The beer is clear but very dark red in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high beige colored head that died down, leaving wispy lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderately strong aromas of sweet caramel are present in the nose along with faint hints of citrusy hops.
T: Like the smell, the taste is a little sweet and has lots of flavors of caramel malts but these are sliced a little by some spiciness in the finish. Only slight amounts of alcohol are perceptible in the taste.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and slightly sticky on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This barleywine is rather easy to drink considering its strength because it hides its alcohol very well. There are also enough hops so that this isn't overly sticky or sweet.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter. Bottled on 10.13.14.
A: Pours a clear amber-ruby hue with 1-2 inch off white head with good retention. With backlighting, you can see fairly active carbonation jets continuing to fuel the head. (4)
S: Dark dried fruit and brown sugar hit first followed by notes of melon, spicy hops, mint (and other herbal notes), and with warming leather and tobacco emerge. Nicely complex. (4.5)
T: Dark dried fruit, dark caramel, leather, tobacco, mint, and brown sugar up front. Mid-palate, more hop notes come forward with citrus, floral honey, and sharp bitter pine. It would have been a solid example of style without the hop load, but the hops really shoot this one in a different and exciting direction. Very well constructed. (4.75)
M: Heavy, smooth, and dark up front. Then turns bitter and dry in the middle through to the finish. Sweet/fruity throughout. Mild-to-moderate alcohol burn. Nice lingering on the palate. Not as heavy as the ABV would suggest. (4.25)
D: What a treat! It is truly amazing to think this is a single-hop brew. The blending certainly helped enhance the complexity. Usually I give high ABV beers some time to cellar, but I'd recommend you don't with this one otherwise you'll lose the nice hop components. The best barleywine I've had in a long, long time. (4.5)

Got a 4-pack from the Target in Denver on Colorado Blvd. Poured from bottle and it came out with a decent head that didn't last too long. Nice color and smell, and mouthfeel is good too. It's a complex one and I'm not super crazy about the taste. There's just too much going on, but it is still good. I probably wouldn't cop another one any time soon.
