Pours an almost opaque crimson-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, coffee bean, and brewed coffee aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa powder, caramel, and coffee with cream flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty, but the coffee qualities come through better in the smell to me.

Serving type: bottle.

Color is a dark red brown with one floating island of foam in the New Belgium snifter. Pleasant grainy scent with some cocoa and coffee. The aroma grows on you. Apparently this is meant to be a coffee brew, though you would have to notice the scratchy bit of art on the minimalist label suggests half a coffee bean. Carbonation is sub-par.

I would have guessed this has a light dose of chiles, since the coffee does not jump out at you. It's a nice warm tang, whatever it is. Rather malty with a sweet note. Brewery says this is made with Cascade, Columbus, and Chinook and rates the IBUs at 46. I suppose this is not a bad coffee-flavored beer if you like the flavor on the mild side. It's not a very satisfying dark brew, whatever it's tryng to be, in my opinion.

From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bottlecraft in San Diego. Price is a ludicrous $9.75, but that includes the burlap bottle neck cozy.

Ruhstaller's The Sauce "Old Soul", porter brewed with White Honey coffee beans. 6.5% ABV

A: Almost two fingers of Antique White head. Gradients from lighter amber to deeper red-amber. Yellow in the dimple. Tons of sediment floating throughout. Tons of tiny bubbles slowly cascade down the inside of the glass as the beer is tipped, leaving behind some nice, albeit light lacing. Medium sheeting, but it clings for quite a while.

S: There is a definite coffee aroma, but it is much lighter, with notes of hay, dirt, and darker honey/lighter toffee. More earthy than roasty. Slight note of baked rolls. Creamy.

T/MF: Flavor is more hop forward, but not aggressive. Hops have a cigarette ash quality to them, but it's oddly nice. There is a slight roastiness, but again, it's very light. A bit of pear, in the background. Just the slightest edge of char. A bit of very earthy toffee flavor in the head.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.

A: Very slightly hazy, dark to dark-medium brown, off-white head dissipated quickly.

S: Coffee bomb, roasted notes, a hint of dark chocolate, very slight hint of mineral.

T: Coffee, Coffee, Coffee! Roasted notes, slight bitterness in the aftertaste.

M: Pretty light bodied, smooth but light, maybe light-medium bodied, maybe.

O: Definitely a coffee-foward porter and light on the porter side. Reminds me of a lighter bodied English Porter with a whole bunch of coffee (and good coffee at that). Great stuff!

Served on nitro. Great coffee and dark fruit nose. Smooth, malty, delicious.
