Half-litre bottle: best before 7th May 2013, poured into a UK pint sleeve on 31st Dec 2012.

Brewed by the now newly? named Chiemgauer Brauhaus (same address etc in Rosenheim).

Light golden body, clear, bright and clean: the head a full white crown of foaming bubbles sat on top, the head tried to hang around and did so for a short while before becoming a wisp and collar after about a minute.

Usual no show of a Helle/lager/pilsner smell: some grains maybe but not really much of anything. Gets my regular score of 3 for a non-smelling Helle.

Tastewise it was your typical Helles/pilsner, mid-range hop and malt mix: refreshing but not really flavoursome in any way.

OK and pleased I came across it.

-Finishes clean and dry

.5L brown glass bottle with branded silver pry-off pressure cap acquired at REWE supermarket. Best before: 12/11/14. 4.80% ABV per the label. Reviewed as a helles because the label clearly identifies it as a hell. Served cold into a Berliner Kindl Weisse glass. Expectations are average.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: One finger wide. White in colour. Fairly thin. Okay creaminess and frothiness. Retention is average - about 2 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Clear translucent transparent pale weak yellow. It's not quite watery looking, but it definitely seems weak and is slightly unappealing as a result. Poor vibrance.

Carbonation seems off. Not unique or special, and far from great. Still, it's fairly clean - no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

AROMA: A hint of citrusy lemon hop character. Faint Munich malts. Pils malts. It's way too grainy, as well, diluting what should be the Munich malt focus of the beer. I may be fooling myself, but I think I'm detecting some corn adjunct?

In any case, it's a subpar aroma for a helles - but mainly because it comes off cheap. And that's exactly what the beer was. Overall, it's an inoffensive aroma of below average strength.

No yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes are detectable.

TEXTURE: Smooth and wet. Light to medium in body. It's not the light crisp feel I expect in a good helles, but it's generally refreshing I guess. It does have a bit too much weight and heft on the palate methinks. This texture isn't a great complement to the taste, but it's not awful. Overcarbonated.

Not oily, boozy, hot, gushed, astringent, harsh, scratchy, or rough. Overall presence on the palate is decent.

TASTE: Generic Munich malts, pils malts, clean barley. Some muted lemon zest. It doesn't seem very fresh or evocative; there isn't a lot of depth of flavour here. It's painfully simple, lacking intricacy and nuance. Simplicity is fine in a helles provided there's subtlety and balance, but this comes off unremarkable by both criteria. I like it in a general sense, but the build isn't gestalt or interesting.

Average duration and intensity of flavour.

OVERALL: It's a downable forgettable helles and I wouldn't get it again, but in fairness it's not bad for the price. You could do far worse. This will likely meet your expectations, but it's far from world class. I wouldn't get it again or recommend it to friends. Definitely below average.

Pale, straw colour, clear, minimal fast fading head. Aroma was pronounced Hallertau hop and red cabbage. Tasted red cabbage, malt and pleasant honey notes, finish was wheaty. Moderate carbonation, crisp texture, smooth body. Overall refreshing, balanced, subtle and easy to drink, shame more people won't have access to this one.

beer dispensable. I take munich eating pizza, a beer suitable for this, but that's it.

Served cold from 500ml bottle into straight mug.

L) Pale yellow colour, clear, lots of big bubbles. Thin white bubbly head, which I am marking it down for slightly as a lot of Helles have nice thick heads.

S) The standard Munich helles aroma - hallertau hops and light sweetish malts.

T) On the lightish side for Helles, but still seems light a quality beer. The light Munich malt certainly dominates over even lighter hop flavours in this one.

F) Light, fizzy and refreshing. Really drinkable.

O) On the light side of the Helles flavour spectrum, but that is fine when you are thirsty. The quality of ingredients and brewing stand up to scrutiny. Kind of mid-way in the Helles league table, so still a very good lager.
