A four-time medal winner, this London-style sweet stout is bold, aggressive and deep black in color with a rich, roasted flavor from a generous addition of UK Chocolate malt and roasted barley.

Coffee aromas w/ mild whiffs of dark chocolate. Opaque, black in color. Solid, tan, head with good retention. Roasted malt flavors with some mild coffee characteristics. Slight bitterness from the roasted malts. A good session beer, one of their better offerings.

This is one of my favorite stouts. Enjoyed from a tall stein, this beer is almost black, with a lovely thick brown head that creates a nice brown lace pattern all the way down the stein. The aroma carries hints of chocolate with the malt. The taste is slightly bitter coffee on the palate, a bit sweet, with a mild hop finish. The brewery here has some variability, and the biggest complaint is that this beer is occasionally a bit acidic, and sometimes a bit more watery than I prefer in a stout. But those are the exceptions; usually it is perfect. I like to have this as a dessert, which means that one is usually enough for one meal.

This arrived with a big, soapy, deep brown head. The color was an extremely dark deep-brown, approaching almost complete blackness with no light able to penetrate its darkness, although it did reveal some ruby-red highlights. The nose was sweetish (chocolaty), along with a slight roastiness. The mouthfeel was full and approaching creamy, thanks to the pour. I experienced a good roasted malt flavor, like a coffee-chocolate mix, on the tongue. The finish had a slightly more bitter taste, along with leaving a grainy feeling in my mouth. I felt that it was a well done stout.

Appearance: clear black in color with some deep dark red highlights on the glass edge. 1" head lingers around a while. Mild lacing paints the glass.
Smell: roasted malts and coffee tones are mild but pleasant on the nose.
Taste: mildly bitter roasted malts, raisins, coffee, a touch a chocolate. There is some background fruity sweetness here along with a noticeable bitterness.
Mouthfeel: lightly dry and smooth throughout. Short aftertaste as the roasted malts and coffee tones linger the strongest on the tongue. Medium bodied beer - which to me was a bit thin for the style.
Drinkability: an easy to drink session stout here. One of the better beers I had during my two trips here.

The beer tasted much better in the pint glass than from the sampler. Looks nearly opaque dark brown, with fleeting retention and lacing. Quite still looking. Smells deep malty with a balance of roasted grain and caramel maltiness. Tastes rich with chocolate, coffee, and american hops (citrusy). The roasted grain and toast flavors fade, allowing the caramels to dominate -- nice. Feels a bit light in comparison to the flavor intensity. Carbonation would help out a lot. Finishes with a lingering caramel sweetness, citrus hops, and a hint of coffee bitterness.

This beer is quite deep in color, you can barely see some brown around the edges, and the faintest ruby color. A tight tan ring of head ends up forming around the edges of the glass. It has a roasted caramel and chocolate like smell, typical of stouts. The taste is very rich at first, sweet malts, almost a red malt even that creates a tart cherry-like flavor. Some taste of fresh floral hops in background. The finish was an interesting mix. There was a noticeable roasted flavor from the darker malts, also the sweet but dry apple cider-ish flavor, but I kept getting notes of some watery type fruits, like currant or gooseberry, as well which I really liked. This beer was fairly low carbonation, and a bit chewy, not bad, but not better than an average stout. I was also a bit amazed by the drinkablity of this stout, one of the more sessionable ones I have tried.

Got to taste this "Award Winning" stout on tap at the brewpub in Nashville. $3.50 for a 16 ounce pour. Served in a basic pint glass, it has a deep, dark brown color, thick rich creamy head. It is basically black, until you hold it up to the light. Not much lace, but a ring of foam lasted all the way to the bottom. Typical stout aroma, roasted malt, some chocolate. The flavor also was what you expect with dark roasty maltiness, along hints of coffee and chocolate, a very nice taste. The mouthfeel was a bit thin and guinness-like, not quite as creamy smooth as it could have been. I really enjoyed this, too bad I didn't have time for some of their other offerings.

Had this on tap at the brewpub in Nashville. Pours a dark brown color with almost no head and leaves no lacing on the glass. Not very dark for a stout. The aroma was subdued, but there was a bit of chocolate character in there. The flavor had a nice concentration of chocolate character and a slight shimmer of coffee. The mouthfeel was too thin. Could use a lot more body. Drinkability was good. Probably the best brew I experienced at Big River.
