Review #2500!
This was labelled as a "sour wheat fruit saison," but the actual style was left ambiguous. To me, it seemed to ride the line between saison and Berliner weiss, but seemed to have more characteristics of the latter. A hazy, golden-orange pour, with a small fizzy white head that completely disappeared after about a minute, leaving it looking like a glass of fruit juice; no lacing. Big blast of passionfruit right up front in the nose, secondary notes of toasted wheat and grapefruit, with a touch of dry grass. Very similar in the taste, very nice blast of fruit, mainly passionfruit, lesser notes of grapefruit and candied lime peel, about middle the road as far as tartness goes, enough to get your saliva flowing, but not at all overpowering; toasted wheat with a little bit of crackery pale malt sweetness, and finally, a light grassy funk in the finish. Pretty good stuff here. It may not be a straight-up Berliner, but it will definitely appeal to those who like the style. Mouthfeel was medium to light-medium, carbonation was light, and it got even lighter...I wouldn't let it sit in a growler for more than a couple hours. Very nice overall. You want to try this before it's gone.
