On tap at Tired Hands Fermentaria in Ardmore, PA.

This one pours a nice amber, mostly clear, with a small white/brown head, and a good amount of lacing.

Smells like caramel, toffee, lightly grassy hops, yams, and brown sugar toast. Definitely doesn't smell traditional- of course not.

This doesn't really feel much like an Oktoberfest-style beer, as expected. It does succeed as a nice sweet-potato accented brown ale, or something like that. There's a nice bready and caramelly malt backbone, with some brown sugar. The sweet potato flavor isn't dominant, but a nice earthy and slightly sweet way to accent the good base beer.

This is medium bodied, slightly creamy, with a good level of carbonation.

Though this is barely a representation of the style, it's still a fun beer.

Light copper with a big light tan head and superb lacing. Notes of yam, light caramel, sweet bread, light flower and spice. Super creamy feel, lightly carbed, soft and slightly dry. A superbly executed and different from the traditional marzen.

Deep amber color with a one-finger head. Mild aroma of toasted bready malts with a hint of sweet potatoes. Smooth malty flavor with the sweet potatoes really coming through. Medium bodied and nice balance in the finish. Blurs the lines between a vegetable beer and Oktoberfest but it totally works.

The color is deep amber bordering on bronze with mild haze and thin white. the smell has a lot of malt with a a slight vegatal smell with a light caramel and subtle herbal aroma and light yeast hint. The feel is moderately bitter with some subtle sweetness medium low carbonation and light spice with a mild alcohol element with a mostly dry finish.

The flavor is very good with a nice toasted maltiness with light yeast element and gentle caramel accent with a hint of hop flavor which has an herbal taste. The malt flavor and yeast combine in a way to express a genuine german lager yet a little stronger than average. The overall impression is a delicious yam beer that happens to be an oktberfest too.

If they're referring to the yams in the name, why did they employ an umlaut that would suggest something else? In any case, this stuff pours a hazy sunset amber topped by a half-finger of off-white foam. The nose comprises cinnamon, clove, caramel, very light cocoa. and some light funky wheat. The taste holds notes of wheat, heavy clove, light flowers, and a light mixture of spice rack offerings (cinnamon, brown sugar, mace, etc). The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a slick-ish feel. Overall, a pretty nice O-Fest, though I'm not sure the yam influence has done enough to elevate this one over many others outright. It is pretty solid, though.

And that's "tuber" not "uber." A beer made with 50 lbs. of North Carolina sweet potatoes; hopped with Cascade.

It's no secret that I hate sweet potatoes. It's the classic story, that I told my mom I didn't like them, she made me sit at the table until I ate them, then I threw up. But, as with many other things I don't like in their "natural" state--pumpkin, coffee, to name a couple others--in beer, I find them anywhere from tolerable to enjoyable, and this beer made sweet potatoes palatable. This is not the first sweet potato beer I've had...Rogue (Buckman) had one called "Side Dish" at their brewpub.

Anyway, mid-sized pour, orange-amber color, slightly hazy, with a small white head that left spots of lacing on the glass. Sweet aroma, caramel, toasted bread, small vegetal sweet potato presence and a touch of cinnamon. Fortunately the potato taste is not too pronounced, but definitely present, earthy, organic, bready, sugary, malty, mild hop bitterness and a bit of nuttiness in the finish, decent spice quality throughout. About medium in body, not totally my thing, but still a well-done brew.
