First had: on tap at TH

Solid dark brown-back pour with a finger of tan head; moderate retention, minimal lacing. Lots of wine in the nose, roasty dark malts trying to make themselves known, notes of chocolate-covered cherries, barrel profile. Yeah, you definitely have to like red wine to like this beer, and fortunately, I am a fan. Big hit of red wine up front in the taste, boozy for sure, yet not very hot, barrel notes come out nicely, dark chocolate, earth. I wasn't a big fan of the regular Only Void, but it seems to be a readily transformable beer when barrel aged, and I think this version was a marked improvement. Only Void's body is about medium, thin for the style in my opinion, though with this version, it worked well, and the dryness from the wine gave it an overall pleasant mouthfeel.

I definitely want to let a bottle sit for a while and see if the wine mellows. It will be very interesting to see how the flavors meld with more age.

On tap at CBC 2016. Black pour with a large-grained tan head. Sour and bitter, kind of like a Belgian stout with some lambic. A bit weird, but quite enjoyable.

Essentially black, with a small brown head that dissipated fairly quickly. The red wine was definitely front and center in the aroma, with a sour vinous quality. However, this was backed up by strong roasted malts. The flavor nicely blended the big, strong roasted malts, including a little bit of coffee, with the slightly sour, acidic wine character. There is definitely a little heat from the alcohol, but very enjoyable.

Definitely a unique beer that I would highly recommend.

16oz. waxed bottle into Tired Hands stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a 1 finger coffee colored head with moderate retention. Beer is pitch black but again, a touch thin. Lacing is stringy with moderate stick and thin legs. Decent.

Nose is slightly tart and vinous. Hints of roast, smoke, and peat. Big woody notes waft in and out. Pretty odd.

Opens vinous, woody, and leathery. Boozy too. Roasted malt, chocolate, liquorice, coca cola in the middle. Fudge and smoke with a bit of bittersweet rotting dark fruit in the end. Finishes boozy with ethanol heat. Aftertaste of rubbing alcohol and thin molasses. Weird but not too bad.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Oily and slick in the mouth and goes down moderately abrasive and boozy. Finishes hot with sticky, lingering aftertaste. Pretty thin and awkward.

Up and down the ratings, this is just a really strange brew altogether. It smells weird, it tastes weird, and it feels weird. And not all of these in a good way. I'd pass on this if I came across it again.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black with a decent khaki head. Dark khaki I guess. Thick collar. Single island of foam

Smell - Lots of red wine. Dark chocolate. Burnt malt still comes through.

Taste - Tons of red wine here. Vinous flavors mix with dark chocolate. Red wine covers up the burnt malt character.

Mouthfeel - Very vinous. Medium low carbonation.

Overall - The red wine covers some of the flavors of the base. Decent barrel nonetheless.

Poured from the bottle into a wine tasting glass. Much thanks to the DC bottle share and to beerontwowheels for the bottle.

Fain tan head on a classic dark walnut brown body. Some minor staying power with the head on the small pour.

Bouquet is quite closed on this. Some time produces very faint notes. Mild indistinct inct chocolate. Raspberry like fruit. A soft subtle roast quality.

Palate is wonderfuly oak soft and supple. Fruit angle opens up a hit with a mild tartness and very low hinting acid. Juicy red fruit with a creamy feel. Slight roast character with a little lush body. Mellow. Not very large or obvious or intense, but not that complex.

Overall an interesting beer from this new brewery. It will be curious to see how beers they make like this evolve, and what the future holds.
