Thanks to Slatetank for the growler share. The brew pours black in color with a brown cap a finger strong that holds fairly decent. Some faint brown clarity is seen through the edges when held to the light.

The aroma is fruity, floral and dank. The fruit aspect seemingly coming from a blend of hops and alcohol before the simcoe takes over with a weedy to herbal note. Inbetween the alcohol esters and dank simcoe aspects is plenty of tropical character that is quite enjoyable.

The flavor is roasted and earthen with a slight coffee charcter before blending to full on fruity alcohol and hop tastes. The flavor of simcoe is unmistakeable and enjoyably bold with its dank appeal and slight tropical aspect. For being advertised as 138 IBUS, it is very well balanced between roasty and hoppy. This is quite flavorful and as it warms up, it gets almost a bit of a dusty grain aftertaste.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. Overall well balanced and super enjoyable. This black ipa is so good that it might make me a believer out of black ipas after all. Would drink again, get this before its gone. Where I fault other black ipas with clashing roasted malt verse fruity/herbal hoppiness, this brew finds the sweet spot that perfectly blends the flavors. Just thinking about it makes me want to have more. Awesome stuff.

First had: on tap at TH

"Is it time to be an android not a man"

Solid brown-black pour with a foamy cappuccino-like head, mild cascading, nice retention, and a layer of lacing formed with each sip. Nice aroma, hop-forward, pine, citrus, light essence of pineapple/tropical fruit, minor cocoa sensation. Great jive between the hops and the dark malts on the palate, but the hops were the dominant factor, pine, citrus, mid-palate bringing in a wave of pineapple, more pronounced than the aroma indicated, smooth chocolaty malts in the background. In many examples of this relatively new style, brewers still haven't quite gotten the hang of the melding of the intense hops with the dark malts. But with this beer, it's not a problem...everything is just about where it should be. Plus pineapple. Smooth mouthfeel, medium body, nice balance, easily drinkable.

Whether you like the style or not, I think you'll like this beer. Plus pineapple.

on tap at the brewpub

Opaque black pour with a tanned, creamy head resting on top. Streaky rings of lacing left behind while drinking. Dark malts, baker's chocolate and pine in the nose with spicy hops and pineapple juicy. Biting hoppiness smacks the tongue up front with piney resin. Charred malts, cocoa, molasses. Spike of tropical pineapple kisses the tongue, finishing bitter and a little dry.

Perhaps not as much pineapple as I initially expected (conditioned on 100 lbs), but this was a nice change of pace from a typical hoppy black ale, which I'm not the biggest fan of.

Poured out as a dark brownish black color with a tan head on top. The smell of the beer has some roasted notes to it from the malt along with a bit of resiny hops too. The taste has a stout-like essence to it but the bitterness comes in and tears through the silky roasted malt. The feel of the beer is smooth and dry. Overall it's a good brew.

From 07/13/13 notes. Had on tap at the brewpub in Ardmore, PA.

a - Pours a deep brown color with one inch of tan head and low carbonation evident.

s - Smells of pineapples, tropical fruits, citrus hops, roasted malts, cocoa, and some earthy notes. Nice nose with some definite tropical fruit up front.

t - Tastes of roasted malts, citrus hops, chocolate, cocoa, burnt malts, light fruit, and toasted malts. No bitterness, but not a lot of hops in the taste. Not much pineapple here.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. No bitterness, pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a good beer, par for the style. The nose is nice with some hops and tropical fruits, and the taste is good, though much less hoppy and just a lot of roasted characteristics. A good beer though they have some better offerings. Would have again and recommend if you like black IPAs.

On tap at tired hands 7/9/13. Brewed to celebrate their 138th batch and the Misfits.

Appearance: Pure black with a nice, thick dark khaki head. Could easily pass as a big stout from appearances.

Nose: Super fragrant hops and fruit. The floral hop character outweighs the pineapple at first, but when it warms up the nose becomes pure pineapples and cool whip with a wisp of distant smoke and chocolate. Really enjoyable to just sit and smell this one.

Taste: The big pineapple flavor is up front followed by a deep creamy sweetness. There's a good bit of other juicy tropical fruit hops and big white flower notes mixed in as well. The chocolately malts are noticeable, but only just. The only detractor I had was as it warms it begins to feel more and more like pure pineapple juice.

Mouthfeel: Starts off rich, creamy, and smooth, an excellent contrast to the bright flavors. As it warmed, however, it became slightly abrasive and astringent from the pineapple.

Overall: I really enjoyed this one. It's certainly the best black IPA I've had to date. The pineapple is an excellent contrast to the subtle chocolate notes and an ideal complement to the floral hop profile. The sweet touch was perfectly executed as well. My only gripe was the decline in mouthfeel and flavor after it warmed, but that's the cost of brewing with such an acidic and enzyme-laden fruit. Keep it cold, drink it fast, and this is a great one. Danzig would be proud.
