Got a growler in a trade from HoppyKilaMonster! Thanks dude!
A: Poured into FFF teku a dark and murky chocolate brown, almost black. Looks like a stout. Very little head, other than some frothy bubbles. As to be expected from a growler.
S: A nice sweet pinapple up front, with some bready malts and some dank hops. Definitely wasn't expecting this much pineapple, especially especially after the growler baking in a box during shipping.
T: Pine an resinous hops up front, giving way to a pleasant pineapple surprise, accompanied by some subtle roasted malts and a crisp bitterness. Real nice malt backbone that interplays beautifully with the pineapple. Finishes with a slightly syrupy sweetness, more roast and carmel in the malts, and a wet piney bitterness cutting through the sweet pineapple.
M: Definitely more thick and syrupy that I would have expected. Carbo faded a bit from the growler, but this was real full bodied and sticky.
O: Really liked this one. Surprised at how well it held up after baking in the sun for a week while it was shipped to me. Not only was this a great black IPA, but the pineapple was perfectly exectuted. I was expecting either no pineapple at all, or that it would be incredibly overdone, but kudos to tired hands for blending it just right. Real enjoyable.

on tap at the brewpub
Opaque black pour with a tanned, creamy head resting on top. Streaky rings of lacing left behind while drinking. Dark malts, baker's chocolate and pine in the nose with spicy hops and pineapple juicy. Biting hoppiness smacks the tongue up front with piney resin. Charred malts, cocoa, molasses. Spike of tropical pineapple kisses the tongue, finishing bitter and a little dry.
Perhaps not as much pineapple as I initially expected (conditioned on 100 lbs), but this was a nice change of pace from a typical hoppy black ale, which I'm not the biggest fan of.

Thanks to Slatetank for the growler share. The brew pours black in color with a brown cap a finger strong that holds fairly decent. Some faint brown clarity is seen through the edges when held to the light.
The aroma is fruity, floral and dank. The fruit aspect seemingly coming from a blend of hops and alcohol before the simcoe takes over with a weedy to herbal note. Inbetween the alcohol esters and dank simcoe aspects is plenty of tropical character that is quite enjoyable.
The flavor is roasted and earthen with a slight coffee charcter before blending to full on fruity alcohol and hop tastes. The flavor of simcoe is unmistakeable and enjoyably bold with its dank appeal and slight tropical aspect. For being advertised as 138 IBUS, it is very well balanced between roasty and hoppy. This is quite flavorful and as it warms up, it gets almost a bit of a dusty grain aftertaste.
This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. Overall well balanced and super enjoyable. This black ipa is so good that it might make me a believer out of black ipas after all. Would drink again, get this before its gone. Where I fault other black ipas with clashing roasted malt verse fruity/herbal hoppiness, this brew finds the sweet spot that perfectly blends the flavors. Just thinking about it makes me want to have more. Awesome stuff.
