Lost Highway is dedicated to the road less traveled. It pours deep black with an espresso colored head that leads to an aroma of orange zest and roasted malts. Hints of bitter orange chocolate balance with notes of dark caramel to round out the adventure.

16oz can. Can bottom is stamped 'CANNED: 12/23/22 BEST BY: 03/23/23'.
Black colored body, with a cherry red back lit edge. Multi finger mocha brown head. Leaves behind extensive patterns of lacing.
Aroma is roasted chocolate malts and hops that express orange zest and pine. Some resin and a little char.
Taste is the goodness of chocolate, caramel, pine, citrus orange, and resin. Final woody touch at the end. Mellow chocolate roast, orange, and resin in the long lived aftertaste.
Medium plus mouth feel. Smooth and slippery, with a dry resin finish. Noticeable tongue burn. Excellent carbonation.
I am a fan of black IPAs and this one delivers all the way through. Balanced.

On tap. Dark brown black color. Tan head.

A fun style that isn’t made much anymore. This was well made. Bitter, resiny, piney, grapefruit, caramel, and chocolate malts.

My can says double black ipa, so I hope this is the same beer. Both 8% so I think so. Crazy pull tab can, didn't even think those existed anymore!

Black ale pours black. Man I love that line. Makes about 3/4" tan head. The aroma didn't impart any of the citrus notes the commercial tug job spoketh of. It was mostly a coffee from the roasted malt kind of sensation that generally tells you this is not going to be an elite tier black ale. Gotta get those hop notes my man.

Taste of charred, roasted malt, bittering hops of a pine like nature. I dunno, has more in common with a robust porter than much beyond just the bittering hops of an ipa. Coffee from the scorched malt feels throughout. I dunno, if you want a black ale that drinks like other dark ales, this might be your jam. If you like black ales that are more like ipas, with hop flavor, you'll be disappointed.

Pours dark-brown to black, opaque, with a light tan head and lots of lacing. Nose is too quiet, but the flavor is not. Bright chocolate and pine hop mingle nicely, bread and citrus rind, that close with strong but pleasant coffee like bitterness. Quite solid.

Bought this a while ago when I was out west, as the date on the bottom of the can read 3/1/18. This held up well over the months but the oddest feature of this beer was the sardine-like top as this had a pull tab! Who knew that the angels would still get their share of this? Regardless of this oddity, it held up well over time and was one of the better examples of the style that I've had in quite some time!

Of course, this had a dark pour to it as the liquid was topped off by a bubbly, mocha head that held it's own. Lots of scattered bubbles lingered on my pint glass as I worked my way through this. Lots of chocolate, cocoa powder, blood orange, molasses, and roasted malt in the nose as the taste contained all of those. Juicy in consistency but dry on the palate, this was very complex for something of this type as this had a wonderful coffee base to it that tied everything in together. Lots of bean here with with a citrus juiciness that came in after the initial hit on my palate. Balanced as something of this style could be, this felt like a Porter with enough juice to it to keep me from reaching for water once I finished it off...

This was strong but didn't feel like an 8% beer in actuality. There was alcohol here but with so much going on, the potency of this beer took a backseat to everything else that was going on here. It's nice when a beer had a great label and a name that hits close to home, as I love both Route 66 and David Lynch. Thankfully, the liquid on the inside was up to snuff as it matched my affinity for the what was on the can. This was a great example of what an American Black Ale should aspire to, while being fully accessible and easy to quaff. Can't wait to get back out that way next month!

Pint can:

Pours very dark brown to black. A thin tan head lasts. Trailing lace sticks.

The smell is of chocolate, caramel, orange marmalade, whiff of spicy alcohol.

The taste is of rich dark chocolate, caramel, a touch of orange marmalade. In a way, it reminds me of chocolate candy with orange jelly (or cream) in the middle. Slight roast. Then alcohol and pine/grapefruit bitterness and spicy alcohol come through in the long finish.

Full-bodied, but not thick. There is a slight clash of sweetness and roasty/hoppy bitterness that lingers a bit on the palate

This is a blend of a great Stout and a hoppy DIPA. Sometimes I have noticed that this style is disjointed. Here things come together well. Unique and enjoyable, this is an excellent example of the style.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 9/19/2017. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, citrus peel/rind, light pepper, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, floral, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/tropical/pine hops and dark/roast/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, citrus peel/rind, light pepper, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, floral, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy hop; and roast/char bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, citrus peel/rind, light pepper, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, floral, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops and dark/roast/bready malt flavors; with an awesome roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; with zero acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/sticky, and lightly chalky/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8%. Overall this is an excellent Black DIPA! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops and dark/roast/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV with the modestly bitter/drying finish, not aggressive. Really awesome balance of juicy hops and dark/roast/bready malt notes; without feeling like a porter/stout. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

16 ounce can dated 1/18/18, poured into tulip. It’s black like motor oil, 3/4” caramel brown head. Leaves good lacing. Just a ton of roast on the nose. Both I and Mrs Strohme2 got a quick whiff of blueberry too. The taste is espresso coffee, roast, tar, pine and dank hops. I don’t get a whole lot of orange zest or citrus for that matter. Nevertheless, it’s still really good. Not a style that Ive seen in a while and I miss them. Mouthfeel is thick albeit a bit flat. Enjoyable
