The beer poured a dark brown color with a small off-white head. There was a smattering of lace.
The aroma was about equally divided between roasted malt and piney hops.
The hops won out in the taste, dank and piney. Some coffee and chocolate.

not familiar with Mother Road Brewery before tonight, even though it's in Flagstaff, AZ - this was served as part of a tasting flight at Whole Foods in a 4 oz. tasting glass...

tonight, I am compaing it with some other IPA's on tap at Whole Foods: Four Peaks Hop Knot IPA, Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, Dragoon IPA, and the standard for double IPA's Dogfish Head 90. I will also pour a Stone IPA from a bottle before the evening is over...

color and appearance are dark coffee color with a head that settles down to about a thin film, more like a stout than an IPA, hard to believe this is a 100 IBU brew

smell is more of toasted malt than hops and the taste is similar, malt and hops do not overwhelm each other, but overall, very nice to taste and smell

In my search for the perfect IPA, this one is good, but I can't really consider it an IPA

12 oz bottle purchased at the brewery.
OG 1.070 FG 1.010 IBUs 100 ABV 8.0%

Pour looks like usee motor oil but with more clarity and, of course, a proper size tan head, The head has limited retention but leaves thick lacing on the glass.
Pronounced hop aroma, with some citrus but mostly pine/spruce.
The taste is similar, except that the dark roasted malts come out, and there's enough sweet malt to partially tame the bitter hops.
Feel: Full bodied with medium carbonation.

O: a big beer suitable for those who like both rich, dark roasted malts, and IPA-level hops.

12 ounce bottle poured into a snifter.

A big mocha, dark khaki head is produced from the pour and it lingers well leaving streaks of lace in its wake. The body pours a roasted brown almost black but sits in the glass looking pitch black. 4.25

Piney and sweet floral hop aroma of the potent kind. Dark roasted malts lurk underneath but they're pretty toned down compared to the expressive hops. 4

Piney flavors to begin and then a light citrus mid-palate that gives way to roasted malt and some chocolatey notes. 4

Mostly smooth and creamy, but there's medium bitterness mid-palate, a touch of piney hop spice and a dry finish. 4

Very enjoyable to drink, smooth and mellow on the booze despite the 8% ABV. Good stuff.

12oz bottle, with a great name for a beer from a relatively remote and isolated location such as Flagstaff, Arizona.

This beer pours a clear (I think), mahogany-tinged black colour, with one skinny-ass finger of weakly puffy, yet densely foamy, and mildly bubbly brown head, which leaves some withered forest-scape lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of bready, doughy caramel malt, coffee dosed with spoiled milk, metallic anise root, piney, leafy, and herbal hops, and a hovering edgy booziness. The taste is gritty, grainy caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, acrid black licorice root, faded day-old coffee astringencies, ethereal wet ash, and muted leafy, piney, and grassy hop bitters.

The bubbles are fairly low-key in their plain and innocuous frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and mostly smooth, as a wee phenolic something or other takes the sheen off of things here. It finishes off-dry, the lightly roasted malt, weird licorice essence, and still muddled as shit green hoppiness lingering for our supposed enjoyment.

Yeah, not the best example of an already humbled style - the contrast between roast and hop never even comes to the forefront, as those other usually behind the scenes biting notes somehow 'shine'. Ok overall, but not something that I'd care to revisit.

This review is for the Double Black IPA. Pours pitch black with minor head, tall pour results in a foamy tan head, lacing is very sticky and remains on glass till finish. Smells wonderful, loads of coffee, chocolate, hops, burnt sugar. The taste is amazing, very fresh and full of chocolate bitterness, coffee, hops, and licorice. There is a little bite on the finish and minor alcohol notes but as a whole this is a fantastic beer and leaves you wanting another.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on July 5, 2014. Received in trade with a non-BA member.

The pour is black as night with a huge fluffy, tan head. Outstanding to look at.

The aroma is much more subtle than I might have imagined but it is lovely with its dark roasted malt character and mild hop character.

The body is definitely in the medium range with a kind of astringency to report.

The taste has a fine malt sweetness at first and the hops are more earthy and downplayed, considering it is a Black IPA. But the subtlety is what makes this interesting and drinkable.

Poured on tap into a wheat ale glass at Phoenix airport Cowboy Ciao.

Deep classic walnut brown and opaque body. Tan head presented with excellent ring and sheet like lacing.

Solid aroma and good on the basics. Soft chocolate notes a little subtle on an otherwise closed nose. Small hints of roast grain.

Palate manages pretty much no surprises. Slightly wet bodied and fleeting char in the mid palate. A bit wet milky palate with a simple hop finish. Slight chalky and dry finish with a decent if not too diverse and big hop profile.

A pretty straightforward black IPA.

Pours a dark black with a tan head. Smells of coffee and hops. Tastes of coffee, some chocolate, hops and bitterness. Medium mouthfeel. Very good black IPA.
