16 oz can poured into Goose Island Nonic Pint.

Deep shiny black color with a frothy beige-brown head of 1/2 finger. Leaves nice hilly lace as it recedes.

Spicy dark rye, tobacco, and melted dark chocolates invade the nose.

Flavor is ever so slightly ashy, but pleasantly - with hints of red pepper, spicy rye, tobacco, Yoo-Hoo, slight bubble gum, lactose, cola, and bitter melted dark chocolate.

Feel is semi-creamy and it stays, but the overall body is medium, with a mild to moderate spiky carbonation.

Overall, a very solid sipper and the rye was a great choice for this recipe. Very well done.

A: Poured from the can into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is black, and there's a very thin tannish head on top.

S: Nice nose of chocolate milk, cocoa, and roasted barley and coffee beans.

T: First impression: a little weak, flavor-wise - particularly after the nose was so encouraging. Lactose is definitely noted, imparts a bit of a chocolate milk or Yoo-Hoo-type flavor. Also roasty stuff is there, however: some roasted barley malt and a bit of stale coffee. Finishes with a modest earthiness, presumably from the rye.

M: Appropriate for a porter - a little thin and watery, and low on carbonation.

O: This is a decent Porter, with a balance of roastiness and sweetness. In some ways I think it drinks more like a Milk Stout than a Porter.

Appearance – Head was mostly a thin ring around the glass. Clear dark brown body.

Aroma – Aroma was mainly coffee, chocolate, and roasted malts. No rye apparent.

Taste – Roasted malts, a little coffee, some chocolate, a little bit of rye bite at the end but masked.

Mouthfeel – Very smooth and creamy.

Overall – A pretty good porter even if the rye did not stand out much.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on May 30, 2016.

The pour is a deep dark brown to near black with a tremendous and foamy tan head. Highly carbonated.

The aroma brings out chocolate and cocoa malts, rye grain, and just general sweetness with a low hop profile.

Light to more medium body.

The flavor has a kind of smokiness that I did not pick up on the nose with the same cocoa and grainy malt presence and mild bitterness to follow.

Poured from bottle. Label says it contains lactose.
Look is dark brown black with a thin dark tan head. Smells of dark roasted malt and a little earthy spice from hops or the rye. Tastes similar, good bitterness and well balanced. Feel is silky smooth and very easy drinking. I would rather prefer a more robust porter with a bit sharper bitterness, but the smooth full body here is a nice unique touch. Very tasty!

Sampling a cellar temp 12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. The beer pours like a dark stout color with dark cola colors and a creamy tan head of about 1 cm that fades to a thin edge layer soon after the pour. The aroma is rich with malt mostly roasted notes some black licorice and a bit of dark chocolate. Not really any hops or alcohol on the nose but there are some hints of spicy rye graininess.
First sip is similar to the nose with roasted malt and coffee dominating with some black licorice and a lingering roasted finish. No hops no booze, very easy to drink. Body is average with a silky texture and very fine tingly carbonation.
This is an enjoyable porter and I would get it again if travelling around western MA.

Had not tried anything from Brewmaster Jack. Purchased this from Tavour in Seattle. Pitch black beer with a light brown head. Has a dark espresso aroma and taste. Overall, a very pleasing porter.

Had this at the Valley Brew Fest. Served in a sampler size glassware provided by the festival. The beer had a dark black appearance with a brown-colored thick head that eventually dissipated. Aromas were rich in burnt coffee, chocolate, malt, raisins, and a little bit of vanilla. Very sweet drink, almost like a frappe in terms of texture and flavoring; a generally roasted coffee and chocolate mixture in a creamy body. Great balance with the moderate carbonation and creamy body to the drink. Overall, this was a fantastic drink over at this brew fest and a great one from this establishment.

Bottle poured into a snifter

Black liquid, brown one finger quickly subsides to a frothy brown ring

Aroma of licorice, tobacco, coffee

Taste of coffe notes, slight bitterness, a little sour

Suds up on the sip, bitterness lingers on the back of the tongue

Nice beer

Appearance: Simply put an abyss of darkness with two fingers worth of dark beige head that leaves behind thick lacing.

Aroma: Dark roasted coffee, cocoa, semi sweet chocolate, faint vanilla bean, very dark roasted malts, caraway seeds.

Taste: Heavy dark chocolate, cocoa beans, dark roasted coffee, floral yet roasted hop, vanilla bean with a silky smooth mouthfeel.

Notes: This one is a straight forward American Porter that packs a good punch but it's not over powering. A good one to pick up and will seek it out again. Cheers.
