Poured from a 12 oz. bottle with label notched date code 12-14 into a modified tulip glass.
A - Pours like a total eclipse, deep dark in color, finely structured mocha carbonation tops out into a rich Crème Brule colored, densely packed, rich froth. Lacing clings lovingly to the glass.
S - Dark cocoa, husky grains, hints of black pepper, blackberry, light roast coffee and a big presence of roasted malts, flanked by molasses and dark fruits.
T - Dark cocoa and molasses lead the way, A nicely balance grain bill chase that out, dark roast malts, oats and the rye all play well together, the black pepper visit's and leaves quickly, no hop bitterness but plenty of spice to offset that. The lactose does indeed leave a slight sweetness to round out the flavors.
F - Slick to start, full in body. Round on the palate, leaves a long coating of cocoa (hot chocolate anyone!). With some time passed the rye spiciness cleans up leaving a semi sweet, semi chocolate calling card.
O - A very nice, approachable porter, intriguing flavors and fine mouth feel. There is potential for greatness here. A fine offering from Brewmaster Jack.
Worth seeking out.

Cheers

Appearance: 1 inch head, opaque, black colored, with high carbonation

Smell: BOSCO, char, and light cream

Taste: cream and rye seed throughout with char, milk chocolate, and light white bread

Mouthfeel: medium body, sweet with char bitterness, moderate carbonation

Overall: Interesting super smooth brew that tastes a lot better than it smells. The beer gets a lot better as it warms as the rye seed becomes more pronounced. I would get this again.

Bottle poured into a snifter

Black liquid, brown one finger quickly subsides to a frothy brown ring

Aroma of licorice, tobacco, coffee

Taste of coffe notes, slight bitterness, a little sour

Suds up on the sip, bitterness lingers on the back of the tongue

Nice beer

Random find at a local shop from a local brewer I've never heard of. Go figure.

Looks good enough. Thick, heavy looking opaque black with a nice persistent tan head.

Nice aroma too, though on the mild side. Roasty burnt grains, toasted pumpernickle bread, and some notes of mild cocoa.

This is entirely working out to be a pleasant surprise. Solid, enjoyable flavor. Toasty, big grain flavor. Rye is noticeable in a bit of peppery sharpness mostly on the back end. Mild bittersweet chocolate notes. No significant sweetness, all the flavors are well balanced.

Light on the mouth feel, almost bordering on thin. Works though- the flavors come through really well without a big heavy mouthfeel getting in the way. Noticeable carbonation helps that too. Pretty clean finish.

Overall, this beer is a really nice surprise. Having never seen this beer on the shelf before, I didn't really expect much. But this is a solid, enjoyable beer that entirely delivers.

Poured into a snifter.

A: 1-finger of creamy brown head which recedes to a thin film. Beer is extremely dark brown/black and opaque.

S: First smell I get is the chocolate, followed by the spicy notes from the rye and some smoke.

T: Similar to the smell. I get chocolate, spicy rye, and some smokiness. A little bitter from the hops. Leaves a nice smoky aftertaste.

M: Smooth, creamy, with a dry finish.

O: A really interesting and delicious beer. I really liked Ambrewsia, so I figured I would give it a try, and am not disappointed. For $4.95 a bomber, it was a great buy.

22oz. bottle dated December 11 2012. Poured into a an Ommegang tulip glass.

A - roasty, chocolate notes with a coffee aroma. very deep smelling with traces of dark fruits like raisins or dates

T - tastes primarily of coffee with a very tiny amount of chocolate coming through. Not as much chocolate as expected. Blend of oak, deep malty flavors and various fruits coming through on the back of the tongue. Kind of a sweetness to it.

M - the mouthfeel is really good. Does not leave my mouth dry at all. Leaves a fruity aftertaste to it.

O- this is a very solid yet modest porter that strikes a very good balance between the sweetness of the chocolate and fruity notes and the bitterness of the coffee taste. Although I feel this porter is lacking in its body, its very easy to drink and a nice choice to have on a cool night. I would definitely purchase this again.
