Collaboration with Stone Brewing

Xocoveza Mocha Stout is the result of the homebrewing spirit and a cross-border collaboration. In 2014, Stone Brewing invited us to join them on this Mexican-Hot-Chocolate inspired creation. Based on Chris Banker's winning recipe, we created this rich and decadent Imperial Milk Stout with traditional Mexican ingredients. In your hands you have Insurgente's version of this for the first time on this side of the border. ¡Salud!

I regret buying this. I'm not a fan of the attempt to make it have a Mexican chocolate like flavor. I think it is too bitter to pull that off and bitter in a way that does not complement the chocolate flavor.

Copenhagen 29/10 2018. 65 cl bottle from Vinbørsen. Black label with blue and green writing on it. Declaring a myriad of spices and ingredients.

Pours opaque dark brown with small beige head. Settles as thin, patchy layer of foam unable to cover the surface of the beer. No lacing.

Aroma is sweet and spicy. Cocoa, dark chocolate, vanilla with hints of nutmeg and chili. A milky lactose quality to the odor.

Soft carbonation. Soft, velvety, thick, oily and creamy texture. A little sticky.

Flavor is heavy sweet followed by medium, spicy bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter and spicy and lingers for a while. Light alcoholic burn.

Sweet, milky and soft - but potent and spicy. A fine Mexican Stout.

Cremosa, con mucho cuerpo, sensación de que dura mucho el sabor en el paladar y pegadora.

Very nice stout. Look is black. Smell is coffee and cocoa. Taste follows. As it warms the chocolate becomes more prominent. Feel is creamy. Overall nice but I was hoping for more Mexican taste.

Deep black color with no highlights with a thick caramel head with great retention.
Predominant aroma with notes of cocoa, creamy chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla and some coffee. Swirling the glass release clear pepper notes as well.
Flavor with notes of creamy and dark chocolate, powder milk, yeast, licorice, coffee, pepper, cocoa powder, nutmeg, hay and cola. Quite dry aftertaste with a decent bitterness
Full body with velvety carbonation. Alcohol of 8.1% is not felt at all. Outstanding.
RIS (or Imperial Milk Stout?) with superb balance of spices around chocolate notes. This version by Insurgiente was pretty close to the Stone one I had not a while ago and bought at the same period. Even the pepper also had no spicy effect, maybe a bit more than stone and more powder milk as well. That is why felt like a Milk Stout, Imperial.

Loved the Stone version of this back when it was Xocoveza for the Holidays & the New Year, giving it a 4.44. Had this version back just a month or so back in March when I brought it to Vegas for a bottleshare. Really liked it, maybe even more than the Stone one. Then wrote, “Very nice. More chocolate and cocoa, and less spicier than Stone’s version. Love it. Almost some horchata in there.” Hope the review follows.

Poured a black color with two fingers of frothy tan head. Serene setting underneath. Very good sporadic lacing. Outstanding retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled cocoa, dark chocolate, light cinnamon, nutmeg, horchata, dark coffee, subdued dry chili pepper, sugary vanilla frosting, anise, hints of black licorice and semi-char wood. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted more flavorful than the nose with a little more kick. Got cocoa, bitter woody cinnamon stick, horchata, anise, nutmeg, dark coffee, chili pepper powder, slight char wood and black licorice. (Taste - 4.25)

Full body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, warming, slightly spicy finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Not quite as good as I remember it from just a few months ago. I prefer Stone’s version. (Overall - 4.00)
