I really enjoy the look of Schloss Eggenberg both in and out of the bottle. It looks like a beer you would drink while listening to black metal which is my favourite style of music. The drink itself is pretty dark, not nearly the darkest I've had, with a slight reddish tone by the light but the colour definitely holds true to the name Dunkel. However, there is next to nothing carbonation wise and the head, at least when I poured it, is non existent. This is disappointing to me because I really enjoy a nice thick head on my beers. Also disappointing, to me at least, is the fact that this came with a plain, black cap (for the collectors out there).

What really confused me about the lack of head on this beer is that the smell is super malty. With aromatics of spices (cardamon or all spice?), caramel, and tonnes of coffee, this doppelbock really had me excited to taste it.

The taste is quite nice. I liked it from the first sip. With a blunt punch of coffee and a subtle pinch of caramel, the initial sip was nice. Soothing. Slight hints of dark cherry, some sort of fruit I can`t put a finger on, and toffee, giving the the lips slight stickiness as if drink hot chocolate or a very sugary coffee. I may be tasting some chocolate?

It is a very soothing beer, giving the drinker a warming sensation from tongue to stomach even when served at a cold temperatures. For an 8.5% alcohol beer, one would expect a large burn from the alcohol itself, but there is almost no burn to speak of. Only a spark, not a fire. I live in mid-north Canada and this beer would be perfect on a cold, dark winter night before a crackling fireplace.

Overall, though my experience with bocks are minimal and not exactly my preference, I would say this is a solid beer with very few flaws, and though I doubt I would ever go out of my way to buy Eggenberg again, if it is ever in my path, I will not hesitate to buy it.Granting I have enough money since it is quite expensive in my area. For fans of bocks, I recommend trying it at least once. Not a fan of that certain spice in this.

Cheers!

Pours a 2 finger head that leaves nice lacing on the glass. You can swirl a nice froth at any given time. The color is dark chestnut, with some deep ruby hues and is fairly clear with nice beading.

The nose is dark fruits, toffee, chocolate, and molasses. A nice burst of malt hits the palate with plenty of dark fruity esters coming through. Chocolate, raisin, toffee, and dark fruits dominate the initial flavor blast, followed by a smooth and creamy finish.

What a great doppelbock. There are plenty of malty, fruity flavors to session with this one for hours. As it warms, even more flavors come out. This beer gets better with every sip.

A: 1/4" white head that left a slight lacing over cola brown liquid.

S: Sweet, malt, and a hint of a metallic smell.

T: Metallic and somewhat malty.

M: Thin and low level of carbonation.

O: Hopefully this was just a bad bottle, and I could not particularly tell, but there are much better Doppelbocks that exist.

From bottle into a Delirum tulip glass

Visual (4): Dark ruby colour with a good clarity. Robust, pillowy off-white head settles slowly to a single finger leaving a nice lacing on the glass. A stream of bubbles dance through the body.

Aroma (4): Malty and boozy. The nose tells of toasted biscuit, molasses sweetness, and a real boozy, alcoholic backbone. The aroma gives a bit of a smokey character.

Taste (4): Predominately sweet, with a bit of acidic/alcohol warming on the finish. Mirrors the smell with caramel rich sweetness, toasted biscuit and dark molasses. Rich in taste and boozy on the finish.

Mouthfeel (5): Medium to heavy body with a real silky smoothness. Very light carbonation with a lingering, mouth-coating alcoholic numbness

Overall (4): A real model of the style that does a lot of things very well. Good balance in the malt flavours, with strong but not overpowering alcoholic lingerings. The mouthfeel is really solid complimenting this robust, but smooth, beer.

Bottle from Brewers haven. Rich and roasty with some molasses sweetness. Appearance is lacking, dull head, but that’s the only bad marks against this brew. Classic doppelbock.

Appearance: root beer brown; clear; minimal head; induces salivation!

Aroma: crisp wheat/malt and mild hop - similar to a lager, but with more caramel and roasty hints

Taste & Mouthfeel: great molasses, burnt caramel flavours - it's actually tasting like root beer too with a hint of earthy spice; crisp and clean, very well balanced to make an easy drinking beer that could have mass appeal; as warms get more yeast character with some more spice and dark fruit (cherry, raisin)

Overall: complex and fun flavour for an easy drinking brew; balances everything perfectly, from sweet to bitter, crisp and smooth, complex and familiar

Dark brown with a ruby tinge. A little fine stream of carbonation. Topped with 1 fingers of light beige head.

Caramelized sugar, malt, creme brulee, egg yolk.

Malt, toasted malt and burnt caramel. Quite sweet with a lightly burnt finish.

Heavy, syrupy body, little fine carbonation.

Got at Cent Fest in Chiang Mai. Quite good for the style. Not super well rounded, but fair.

Nice brown reddish color. It made barely one finger of off-white head with low retention.
Malty aroma, raisins, booze, strong licorice and earthy hops.
Sweet malty taste, booze, brown sugar, pepper and earth hops. Dry and mild bitter aftertaste.
Full body with low to medium carbonation.
A bit too sweet and apparent booze, but still flavorful and warming.
