This beer poured a nice golden straw with a dime sized head that goes away quickly. Definite sweet floral notes with caramel accents. The flavour is very similar to the nose with a bit of bitter grassy aftertaste. The balance of sweet and bitter hide the high alcohol well. A tasty little beverage.

 

 

 

This is beer 16 from the Rieder advent calendar. Pours a very clear pale yellow (has an aura of weak flavour), the thin egg-white colour head lasts only a moment, and there is quite a bit of lacing. The aroma is distinctly lager yeast, with an overtone of candy sugar. Extremely sweet flavour (this seems to be a bit of a theme with this calendar), but with an extra dimension of fizziness that leaves a very refreshing feeling in the mouth. It seems I've hit yet another dead-average lager in the never-ending quest for great beer. I'm not trying to knock it, because it's quite sessionable and there's nothing wrong with it, but there's nothing that really stands out about it either...

Super clear, bright golden pour with mild carbonation and a thin head reasonable lacing for the "style". The light carbonation maintains a barely visible, 1 bubble thick head and a solid ring around the edge. Despite the head it is a very pretty golden lager.

Musty lager yeast, untoasted cereal malt, light floral honey and a touch of honey. Unpleasant at best.

Lightly sweet biscuits with creamy honey and nice, mildly citrus hop spark accompanied by a carbonation source dryness before a mild yeasty finish that makes me want another sip. Not complex but drinkable with a sweet/hop balance that is just right. On a second glass there is a nice citrus spice of coriander and a titch of cumin and wood.

smooth honey mouth feel with a bigger body in the middle from the carbonation and an active finish at the back of the palate.

A just above average and looks pretty. Drinkable but there is a yeasty activity at the back of my palate on the finish that I am not sure I am ok with. I don't know if it is the flavour or mouth feel.

This beer pours a clear, medium golden yellow colour, with three fingers of finely foamy eggshell white head, which leaves some broad loops of fuzzy lace around the glass as it evenly subsides. A bit of well-space upwardly-mobile effervescence continues well after the fact.

It smells of grainy cereal malt, sugary, floral honey, a bit of sharp, yet sweet alcohol, and musty, earthy hops. The taste is more saccharine cereal grain, fruity white honey, a bit of caramel/toffee, um, 'otherness', a slightly sharp yeastiness, and floral, earthy noble hops.

The bubbles are a tad simmering, but never speak up or out, the body a decent medium weight - the perceived sugar having an agreeably minor role in that, and quite smooth. It finishes sweet, for certain, the cereal graininess melding into the honey and table sugar essences in a generally successful manner, as the florals and alcohol go back into hiding.

A fairly enjoyable bock, the seemingly over-represented sweetness players all doing well to integrate with each other, leaving us well a more drinkable affair than I had been expecting. Nicely warming, too.

Craft beer advent... best before 11-2013 and pleasantly fresh.

A: Clear gold, big white head, incredible retention, leaves a nice lace.

S: Floral, steelie grass, hint of toffee.

T: Light toffee & caramel, bready, floral, steelie grass, nice hint of sulfur from the yeast, balanced bitterness, alcohol is very subtle.

M: Well-attenuated, moderate body has a slight sweetness with a crisp finish.

O: A VERY good Helles Bock.

A bright golden liquid with tiny bubbles and upon closer inspection some suspended particles, thumbs width of bone white foam sits for a minute and leaves a thick ring of lace

S sweet honey and bready malt, some purple candy, booze, sweet grass if that makes any sense

T sweet malty booze, nothing impressive but its decent stuff, booze could be better concealed

m silky for a moment then the bubbles take over, fruity boozy aftertaste and a little heat with sticky lips

O I could take it or leave it, more booze then I would expect at 7.1% but easy enough to drink but I'd get board before finishing a second

perhaps I just don't care for the style, didn't do much for me almost like a malt liquor

Schloss Eggenberg Fest Bock pours up long & tall with a very foamy, long lasting white head that nicely caps the clear, light golden yellow body. The lightly sweet aroma has a dry grainy edge to it with some toasty (saltine cracker) maltiness. There's just a hint of grassy (haylike), floral spiciness from the Noble finishing hops that's just underlying the malt. Otherwise very clean, no fruitiness or diacetyl. Maybe just an initial hint of DMS in the background which is OK per style. The somewhat atypical flavor starts off mildly sweet & lightly bready with a moderately unbalanced bitterness that carries well into the subtle creamy, semi-dry, slightly harsh warming finish. Medium bodied & well attenuated. This seasonal offering from Eggenberg seems more in tune with a Euro Strong Lager than an actual Hellesbock. Try pairing some traditional Knabber Nossis (dried sausage) with some buttery Grinzing cheese and warm bread rolls.

Golden straw color - a little darker than a pilsner, more like the color of a Dortmunder. Thin white head. This is more like a mai-bock than a regular bock - regular bocks are typically darker. Hard to detect much aroma - some light malts. The flavor is light, malty, and evenly balanced - like a Helles. Can't taste much malty depth or the 7.10% alc. at first. It actually seems to have less overall character than their regular pilsner. Odd. Light to medium body, and a slightly sour/sweet malt/ alcohol finish. Eggenberg can do better than this.

I poured this beer into my tumbler at 50 degrees. The beer was yellow pilsner colored and I thought it was going to be a great light beer. However, the skunk smell was evident quickly and though the beer looked great, the taste was skunk bad also. Very out of date tasting. The be did have a good head though which showed it was not flat.looks anyway. I will not buy again.

Poured from a .5L bottle to a tall glass mug. The liquid is gold with good carbonation. The Head is a good 2 fingers white and leaves nice lace.

The smell is very nice yeasty biscuits and some hits of light fruit.

The taste is quite good and easy to enjoy. This one seems quite fresh and it does make a difference even at 7+ % ABV. The taste is Helles Bock full on. Big malty bread taste works well, and a nice hopy finish to even the score.

The mouthfeel is very good. Big thick malt almost syrupy like liquid bread. Good thick body and nice bity carbonation.

A nice brew. I will try this again, sure do wish I could find it on tap.
Prosit MK

Pours a moderately bright golden amber with a brief white head that reduces to a thin but persistent lace. Slightly buttery malt and grassy hops in the aroma. The somewhat unrefined palate features a leafy vegetal hop bitterness up front followed by a dry malt base and firm touch of honey.

Pretty rough around the edges, but somehow it’s easy to suck back and has enough flavor to keep you interested. Though I will say it tastes more like a Euro Strong Lager (and not a great one) than it does most of the bocks I’ve tried. Not great, but not bad, give it a try…

Found in a Vienna supermarket, the standard brown half liter bottle has a green and white label with a coat of arms above the name and the year 1681. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 10/31/07, I opened it on 02/10/07.

Pours a crystal clear solid gold under a one finger white head that fades very quickly and leaves no lace. The nose is sweetish fruit with a bit of straw. The mouth is very prickly and quite sticky. A syrupy sweet opening starts us off, with a definite undertone of straw. This is followed fairly quickly by a strong astringent bitter, somewhere between espresso and ear wax. The bitter last long into the aftertaste. This beer is a bit harsh and a bit raw. Not really a good experience.

500 mL bottle with 02.2006 stamped on the label. Although obtained here in Virginia, I'm pretty sure it was never meant for the American market as there is no federal warning and the only word on the label that is even close to English is "bock." It pours into the pilsner solid gold with very high carbonation and a two finger, creamy white head that leaves copious lacing. The second pour reveals it to be unfiltered. However, it's downhill from here. It smells of sweetness with maybe some adjuncts and skunk. The taste consists of skunk and a mild bitterness on top of too-sweet malts. It's almost a chore to drink. The mouthfeel is medium to full, smooth, with medium carbonation and a light finish. Overall it tastes like a malt liquor and is too thick for what it is. I realize it is ten months past the freshness date, so it must have either taken a wrong turn somewhere or was bad from the start. Not a good first impression from this brewery, but I have the their Urbock and the new Samichlaus so they have a chance to redeem themselves.

The colour is clear yellow; the white head is compact and three fingers thick.

The smell is a bit weak and there are fine notes of some malt and dry bitter hops.

The carbonation is OK for a lager with fresh small bubbled. However, it is rather short.

The first taste is one of sweet malt, some body and some bitterness in the background. It develops into a vanilla-like soft flavour with some alcohol and a growing clean bitterness. The aftertaste is sweet and warming with notes of white bread and a long lasting (rather anonymous) bitterness.

This is a good representative of this style with the alcohol well hidden behind the strong malty flavour.

Try a sample of Fest-bock before you order--it's different than what you'd expect.

Beer sampled at RFD Washington 6/1/04 from tap. Beer was light straw in color and had a thin but puffy white head, the kind of visuals you would associate with a Helles-style lager, even down to the slight cloudyness. It was light colored for a Marzen and certainly light colored for a Bock. Nose was alcoholic but with a slight biscuty malt aroma.

Flavor was alcoholic but in the general ballpark for a traditional Marzen. The sweet Munich malts and light hopping were no match for the aggressive attenuation.

The beer poued crystal clear pale straw. The head was white and lasting to lace the glass. Very effervescent in the pour.

The aroma was malty and fruity yet crisp.

The flavor was bitter almost metallic with malt in the background and hop bitterness up front. The flavor was fruity and not as clean as expected.

The finish was dry and bitter. The body was medium light.

Not a brew to write home about, it could use more malt backbone.

Name is Feft Bock. 0.5 L bottle. Der Feinspitz Bock below name.

Brilliant golden hue, and absolutely crystal clear indicating ample lagering. Thin, but dense head leaves loose lace. Buttery, caramelly malt w/ a light nuttiness reminescent of peanut brittle in aroma. Round caramel sweetness is perceived at first and yields to lightly toasty Munich malt and subdued fruity melanoidins. Clean overall in flavor profile. Hop bitterness is appropriately mild, and lets Munich malt to dominate, yet it offsets residual sweetness partially. Surprinsingly dry and well attenuated for a hellesbock and perhaps a touch thinly bodied, but this quality lends somewhat dangerous drinkabilty. Finishes squeaky clean and dry. Although a bit understated for a hellesbock, the clean malt profile, and overall balance lend Left excellent drinkability.
