Style: American Amber / Red Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A German Dunkel inspired American Amber Lager with a signature hop aroma. This lager combines mostly Munich malt with the addition of gently balanced caramelized malts giving it a rich copper color as well as a bit more malt backbone and overall character than the typical amber lager. The complex combination of noble hops enables our lager to be paired with a wide variety of food items, and its clean lager finish creates a beer that will really hit the spot on those hot summer afternoons.

Poured from the tap into a pint glass. The appearance is a dark ruby black color with a small tan head. The aroma is roasted malt and nuts. The taste is very similar to a nut brown ale.

A: crystal clear; deep amber in color; 1 finger khaki head that receded to a thin collar; very little lacing;

S: molasses with coffee in the background;

T: caramel, coffee, a hint of nutmeg; no hop character; very mild bitterness on the finish;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; lightly dry finish;

O: an odd beer; very drinkable, but nothing about it made me think "amber lager". It was inspired by a German dunkel - I didn't get that connection either. additionally, I didn't get any of the hop character that the can promised;

Overall I'd say this is a solid beer. Definitely an amber and representative of the style with the creamy maltiness. It looks beautiful in the glass, pouring a nice dark brown with cream head. I've had better and I've had worse, but I'd gladly drink one any day.

First had a couple of years ago, and again most recently in March 2017, each time poured from 12-oz. can, gift from friend, into tumbler. The can still recites it is contract brewed for Old Black Bear by Back Forty, but I wonder. OBB opened a brewery and Taproom in spring 2015, and this latest sample is a solid, clean amber Lager, without the former hint of presumably unintentional sourness. Rating upgraded appropriately.
